what make is PS? sorry, I don't know it…. I've used 38, 40, 45 and 50mm poles and I'd say 40 or 45 is the best for me (I have small hands). The smaller the poles get, the easier the grip but the 38 kinda felt like it was a bit too thin – especially for my legs but it's down to personal preference really. Leg holds won't be more difficult, you will just feel more pressure on the contact points because of the reduced thickness of the pole

I'm pretty sure "upandover" has a 38mm brass action pole that she likes. She could give you some input as well. You might want to message her. I can tell you going from a 50 to a 45 was interesting, but not too hard. I just had to squeeze my legs more than I was used to, but that is good cuz it builds more strength. The diameter difference between the 50(2") and 45 (1.75") is the same between the 45 (1.75") and 38 (1.5"), so you would just have to squeeze that much more. Bobbi's poles in Australia uses all 38mm and they do some awesome stuff on them. One thing that is cool is the smaller diameter poles are easier to wrap yourself around, so it would be easier to do a ballerina on a 38 than a 45, and easier on a 45 than a 50. Look up Bobbi's poles and watch some of their stuff. I think having experience in the differenct pole daimeters is really a good thing (as well as the finishes.) You were interested in a brass anyways; you could always get a 38mm brass when it comes out (which should be soon.) 🙂

If you watch any of the Pole Dance Australia videos those are the small poles.  I think Angel of  Discoveries Dance built one in her house.

also, if  you watch Luckygirl1220 or webstwe on on youtube, or any videos from Brassy Butterfly, those are 1.5" poles. They are custom built 15' coated spinners.

I own a 38mm brass spinny pole (thats what I use in all my vids) and I love it. But its all ive ever known – I trained at Bobbis Pole Studio in Sydney and all their poles are 38mm. In fact I think most Austrlian Pole Comps (Like Miss Pole Dance Australia) use38mm – so they're very popular over here. Brass is graet for grip, it doesnt rust – but it is expensive. Theoretically, it should be easier for us to grip a pole with our hands thats smaller, but im not sure about leg holds… But when Alethea Austin was in Oz recently she said 38mm brass spinny is now her favourite kind of pole…. and I assume she has tried most… so there u go. Hope that helps.

I'm at Studio Verve in Sydney, and they also use 38mm brass poles. I think Scarletthoney is right in that 38mm is very popular over here.

I bought the 40mm x-pole x-pert when it first came out here, and I love it. I also love the 38mm, but do find it difficult as far as leg grips. I have a pretty massive thigh gap, so even doing crucifix and pole sits are extremely difficult on the 38mm. That has nothing to do with how tight I'm gripping, it's simply my anatomy.

Although only slightly bigger, the 40mm does make it easier for my legs to grip, while not compromising on hand grip either!

So I think it depends, but I can't even imagine dancing on a 45mm or 50mm. I feel they would be enormous compared to skinny poles!

I do have a 38' and love the thing to pieces, unfortunately it's back home in Canada right now. It's a one piece and I couldn't bring it on the plane.

I personally find knee holds much easier on the 38, as I can jam it right up in my knee pit and it tends to stay there.

the only move I have had trouble learning on it was the death lay, there just isn't enough surface area to hold on to.

On a side note I have a friend whose family builds industrial equipment, he said he might be able to build me a 38 pole, but with a rubber cover like Chinese poles, kinda the best of both worlds.

well see if it pans out

Anyways, I do recommend the 38 for people with small hands, but if you intend to compete I suggest sticking to the 45 so it's not a big jump come competition time.

Hi, sorry I'm late to the party! But I thought I'd share my thoughts. I initally trained on a 50mm, I sometimes train on a 45mm and that is definitely my favourite. I have been on a very high 38mm – it was in a workshop – we were told to climb to the top of the pole and do an aerial invert into a scorpio – I was the only one on a 38mm  – the other girls new the studio well and obviously avoided it because I got to the top of this thing and was hanging upside-down about 4 or 5 metres off the ground on this skinny thing…it scared the life out of me! At that height the 38's fixed top and bottom have quite a bit of flex in them – not fun at all! Give me a 45mm any day. I do have quite a solid leg hold so don't normally find them difficult but definitely feel less secure on a 38..

I just got my new 40mm X-pert on Friday and I am totally in love! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif  So far I've had no trouble with sits, CKR or CAR, or any of my leg hangs. I have yet to try planks or superman, but I've been in workshops all weekend and am in need of some rest from the pole cuz I'm extremely sore. I also have a 50mm X-pert so I still intend to move between the 2 sizes.
