some move
Posted by carriej on February 26, 2010 at 12:57 amDon’t know anything about this move, not even the name! I’ve seen it don’t a lot recently and it was done at one of teh pole jams around december. I remember junglecat doing it on a vid, but i can’t find it. It’s like the pretzel but then top arm lets go of the pole and grabs the foot.
So…
What’s the name? How the hell is it done?
Does anyone have a vid that shows the progression well?

Sounds like you might be talking about the ‘Ballerina’ (alt. Stag pose).
It’s the last move in this vid by Veena: http://www.youtube.com/user/StudioVeena#p/u/3/VID71YSiIQE
Is that, or some variation of it, by any chance what you mean? https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_question.gif

hmmmm….maybe, but I thought it was done from the pretzel, so wouldn’t the other leg be the one on the pole?
-
That is done correctly from a pretzel (looks like she did the spin left hand dom which might be why it looks different to you).
-
Jenyne does this from a ragdoll (crucifix bent over). Practiced this today https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Forgot to say: also called a skater split
I thought the skater split was done with the whole body behind the pole? i.e., one leg on pole in climbing position, opposite arm holding pole, free arm holding free leg in extended position.
Sometimes it kills me that there are so many names … and so many moves!!! I have a love/hate relationship with the volume of pole stuff that fills my head, lol.

I hold onto my leg with my arm on the other side of the pole (not in front but behind)….a little more difficult than the pose in the photo. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

I hadn’t even noticed! You also use the opposite arm!
Wow, new revelations! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif -
I can do the one in the picture. I think I"m thinking of a move just like that but the left hand grabs the left leg (with both arms and your head to the right of the pole)
I think I remember a vid of junglecat helping someone get their leg up to their hand…

I can’t to get my body wrapped around the pole like this. I get hte same pain as when I do the allegra. The odd time I do get into a similar position, with the pole behind my back, right leg wrapped and my left armpit hugging the pole, it doesn’t look pretty and elongated liek veena, It looks scrunched up. When I try to elongate, eithe rI hurt my ribs or my leg pops off hte pole. Any idea why this is?
-
oops. oh yeah! you guys are right! skater split is the harder one where you have to contort a little… my bruises can attest to that!
polergirl, i think you’re thinking of the skater.
moonflower, Veena does hers from a sit which looks hard and fast! She also has this extended really far! Has her bottom foot hooked maybe to help keep her on? Jenyne does hers from a pole stand at 3.25 here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRhAIzu_cWM I have been working on this too and am SO bruised on my arm. I don’t hold it across my ribs much at all. Thigh and arm. I find I have to keep my head down and lean away from the pole, put my arm back and kick my leg up all at the same time. Still working on smoothing it out…a lot…

mili yes thats the move. the one jenyne did. what are we calling it?
-
I’ve seen it called a Skater Split in another thread and that’s where I got the vid from Jenyne, but I can’t remember where that was.
-
Yay! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif I get which one you mean now. It’s apparently called a Flying Ballerina. There was a thread on it about a month ago: http://www.studioveena.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2505&st=0&sk=t&sd=a
-
I think Flying Ballerina is the Skater Split with straightened legs and no hand gripping the ankle, yep.
-
LOL! I was told that that is called the Twisted Ballerina https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif
Hello o familiar confusion! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_colors.gif

Ha ha. Yes, I get confused so badly. I always have to translate different names I have seen or learned online for each move in my head in pole class when they say do this, this, this, this then this. It’s like speaking different languages. I don’t know where I saw it called a Skater Split. Twisted Ballerina is nicer and goes with Flying Ballerina better https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I know!!! We have our own names for a lot of moves too (e.g. gemini=cliffhanger; back hook spin=flashdance, etc.). So explaining moves to my polebuddies is always confusing. Switching back and forth between different pole lingos. I totally feel your pain! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif Anyway, I try to stick as much as possible to the names that are used most on SV, with wikipole as a backup.
I agree, btw, with the point about the ballerinas going together nicely. It gives us a whole range of ballerinas to choose from https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif -
Lol, this is nothing! Try going to a studio where they think they’ve "made up" a move such as the reverse grab! And call everything something different! That was my first pole experience. I still have a hard time calling it a Half spin, and not a Swing dip, or a back hook spin not a Halfpint, or a front hook spin a ballerina spin/showgirl spin. Seriously, changing lingo is really hard!
Is wikipole really helpful to everyone else? Every time I go there, they don’t have any explanations of the moves or pictures, so I’m never sure what move they’re talking about! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_scratch.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cat.gif -
It’s not always helpful. The spins category is still under construction I think. But a lot of the tricks have pictures or videos. A half wiki is better than no wiki https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif
