Are you and the pole properly warmed up? If so, then you might need a grip aid. If not, try getting your body and the pole really warm before you invert. Warm skin is grippier.

i was looking at pole videos and think maybe im not ready to invert yet due to the fact that i have to kick my feet up against pole just to get up…sucks if im not ready for that yet what else can i do..spins are so boring already ….i dnt know what else to learn that is basic

What else can you do? A lot! Inversions aren’t the be all end all. How is your dancing? Transitions? Flexibility? Flow? I’ve been pole dancing for years and can honestly say I am never bored.

mmmm im bad at flexivbility im trying to learn that now… but as i work on that i also want to learn more pole stuff .. transitions get better everytime i practice . but i feel dumb practicing same spins and moves … im going tonight to my first beginner pole and flex class i hope to learn something more

I LOVE your enthusiasm, passion and determination but I think you are trying to move too fast too soon. Slow down girlie. Inverts take more strength. You could be sliding for many reasons–not able to do & hold because lack of strength, not properly warmed up (body and pole), not getting into move properly/correctly. Take a step back from the basic invert for a little bit until you get a chance to build up your strength more…work on building up your strength, flexibility conditioning, spins, flow, transitions, floorwork and beginner moves right now, just try to slow down a tad and enjoy your pole journey, don't try to rush it 😉

You're right that if you have to kick hard to get into an invert you're probably not ready for it yet. Climbs, pole sits, Crucifix, handstand against the pole and then going into reverse crucifix, are just some ideas of things you can work on before an invert. Once you're comfortable going from a handstand into reverse crucifix and hanging there you can wrap your body around the pole hang on and slowly release your legs into a V and then lower as slowly as possible to the ground. This will help build strength for inverting from a standing position. Grip strength is also something that has to be built up over time. You could be sliding down because your hands aren't strong enough yet.

I would say work o. Your hand stand to inverted crucifix first to get use to leg grip and practice invert from the ground to get the proper feel first. Veena has a lesson for hand stand crucifix. There are lots of things you can do!!! Check out the lessons.

Oh and sliding is also typical with new poles. Try steaming it with a clothes steamer that will help. It takes some time for a new pole to be broken in a little and not be so slippery too 😉

@calipolepixie thanks for the new pole advice …i need to go buy a clothes steamer….. and thanks ladies all this feedback is beyond great

Perhaps I disagree because I still kinda suck at inverts but I don't think you should be discouraged just because you kick into it. I still kick into mine a bit about 8 months on but I have noticed that my invert is getting stronger by practicing inverting!!
Also, once I'm up there, I can do a load of moves….even though my initial basic invert isn't the strongest.
With that being said, please use a spotter when starting out if you're not massively strong with it. I got stronger at inverting through classes where I had a "butt shover" who helped me push my hips up – which I've now learned to do myself.
I guess what I'm saying is practice makes perfect and if you don't practice inverting how are you going to perfect it? 🙂 x

@Scottish- That's not the best idea. If you kick into an invert when you're not prepared for it, you can injure yourself pretty badly. I know a few people who have cracked ribs doing that.
-
I guess it depends on the degree of the kick but I guess my point was just not to be disheartened to the point of not trying just because you're not as proficient at the deadlift invert style that's seen in so many videos but very hard to master. But of course safety first!

I think if you kick up into an invert, not only can you really hurt yourself if you miss or pull a muscle, but you can also end up overconfident in your abilities in strength. Then you may be attempting more difficult tricks that you don't have the back, shoulder, or core strength to execute correctly. I understand the desire to invert, "going upside down" is what many people want to learn and consider it to be the first major accomplishment. But it's not something to approach lightly. Impatience can lead to injury.
It's ok to swing/use your leg for momentum as you step into the pole when first learning the basic invert. I still do that when I'm getting tired. But that's different from jumping into it. The majority of the motion should come from your shoulders, back, and core working in unison to lift your legs and butt up. A lot like yoga shoulder stands.
My first pole instructor got us working on the chopper/V invert from the ground early on. I think that helped me a lot. It's much harder to do those initially, but it forced me to learn how to do it properly with the right muscles engaged. And then learning scorpio and gemini was a lot easier because I was already almost there. Another thing is if you can only invert by kicking up off the floor, you won't be able to do an aerial invert that way.

As others have mentioned, it's great you have so much passion for pole…but please do not rush into inverting. It takes time for our bodies to build the strength needed to invert. If you are taking the lessons here, there are tons of strength and conditioning exercises you can do to help you gain the strength you need.
You do not need to invert to learn a Gemini, if you are excited about learning some more advance pole work, for many of them, you can safely work from the ground first! I demonstrate how to do this in the lessons as well.
One more thought, it looks like you had a powder coated pole and have moved to a chrome pole, this finish will not be as grippy as the powder coated finish so keep that in mind. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

If you feel like you're kicking up into an invert, but really want to be upsidedown, you should be working on getting out of an invert SLOWLY. Go into reverse handstand, crucifix, and un-invert yourself. Doing it this way is a great way to build muscles without kicking up into anything. I recommend doing the caterpillar prep exercises in this video at about 5:20. If you go from the reverse handstand method, you can do this exercise. Doing these a few times a week will help. I don't recommend caterpillar exercises daily because it's half and half abs and upper body. While you can train your abs every day without a whole lot of risk for over-use, the upper body needs rest time. Make sure you're eating enough protein to make these worth it 🙂
