Well im sure we have all had a very intresting visit to the doctors that turned into you feeling very embaresed that your a pole dancer and the doctor telling you to take up a new sport. I twisted my side doing reverse grab to pretzle. After a week off no pole I rang the doctors. I went in and told the doctor I think I over stretch muscle in my side. So how have you done this. I reply at my dance class. Yes but how. So I go on to tell him at pole dance. He replys so you fell off a pole. Nope I go in more detail about this really great trick I just lernt :)feeling very proud I got it. And the doctor replys maybe you should take up swimming instead. Hmmm think he was not impressed. Has any one else had one of these great conversations with some one.

Yup, kinda had the same experience years ago when learning to invert (improperly) and pulled a muscle in my rib cage.  It have a female doctor but still didn't tell her at first, I just said doing ab work by lifting knees to chest and straight out on a pull up bar.  She thought that was too strenuous for me at 50+ yrs old!  It didn't get any better so had to go back to make sure I didn't fracture a rib and fessed up!  She just looked at me like deer caught in headlights LOL and said "Oh my, what if you fall off?"

BTW, what did doctor say or do about stretched muscle on your side?  I have same problem right now.  I was bad girl and didn't warm up before inverting to practice split grip ayesha and jackknife and strained right side muscle badly.  It begins to feel almost all gone and I tried an invert and some invert stuff a week ago and OUCH.  So not going to do any pole till I see it's totally healed, which I hope is soon.  Just wondered what he said about the muscle.

I stayed off the pole for a week. Then when got on didn’t invert on the ground for a few week. Every time I inverted it felt like my ribs got smashed in. But air invert didn’t hurt. He told me to stay off pole for 6 week. But im quite a quick healer n no my body so new when was ready again just dnt do anything that pulls them muscles for a few week :). Hope your better soon hunny xxx

When I told my dr about pole, it was more awkward for me than him.  Hes been my dr my whole life so hes seen me grow up.  He asked for my YT screen name so I know hes watched.

I am a nurse practitioner student and sometimes wonder if any of the patient's pole dance. I wish I could recommend pole dancing to clients for exercise without worrying about the consequence of becoming "the provider who pole dances".

Unless someone is at an increased risk for injury, I don't think I would ever reccomend a different type of exercise. I am usually happy if someone is doing any type of exercise.

    Glad you are feeling better!

When I hurt my shoulder almost two years ago I had to describe a shoulder mount to my doctor. After the explanation there was a few seconds of silence and then he says, “You can DO that??” LoL, I think he was impressed! 🙂

I always had such a hard time describing how I hurt myself to my physio, but I was never embarassed – she was always suitably impressed, but sometimes at a loss to completely understand how I injured myself. Now I have a pole physio (Selina Tannenberg, she is INCREDIBLE! Look her up!), and it's like a breath of fresh air – not only could I just say 'split grip ayesha with the left hand above my head', but she has had more success helping me due to understanding what she thinks is a very common pole injury! What's more, we talk about pole the WHOLE time she is working on me, she NEVER tells me to stop (only one move, for a set time period, haha), and she's helping me reach my flexibility and strength goals! It's amazing how having your healthcare provider truly understand what you do can help!

I have had friends be looked down upon, told to do something else, and completely misunderstood – "Maybe you should find a new line of work" (to not-strippers)!

Ekinkah 🙁 I wish I lived near enough to you to feasibly look her up.  I could never ever dream of telling a doctor how I injured myself.  I like to just shrug and say, "I don't know, I think I was lifting something to heavy at work or something."

On the other hand, I've told a few friends who were a little judgmental about having a pole in the house while I have a teeny baby.  I tell people to get over it or get out of my life.  Be tough, let people know that it's a part of you.  The more firm you are about what you do, the less people will even dream of speaking against it.

I slipped on sweat in a twisted ballerina a few years ago and severely sprained my ribs/ intercostals on my right side. I went a month of thinking I had broken ribs before going to the walk in (booo no health Insurence!) And has to explain how the injury happened. The doctor asked me if people still tip if the stripper falls! I trie to explain that I was at a dance fitness studio, not a club but I could tell he wasnt having it. :/ on the other hand, the 2 nurses knew what I was talking about and thought it was cool! Hopefully they educated him afteri hobbled out!

I was talking to a man in a pub i work in. And we got on the topic of fitness. So I told him that I pole dance his reply was so when do you work there if your work here friday saturday and Sunday :/ lol when I told him its not a strip club its a pole dance studio he then looked rather confused. Im begging to think that most mens minds work the same. Pole + women = stripper
