I used to have serious yeast and bacterial infection issues. It was incredibly frustrating, so I know your pain!
I had never had one before in my life, then I started getting either a bacterial infection or yeast infection every two months like clockwork. It didn't matter when in my cycle it was either. My poor boyfriend thought it was him since the first time I got one was about 4 or 5 months after we started dating (sleeping together). My gyno (Planned Parenthood) said that it could be sperm, but we had stopped using condoms (after being tested, of course and I'm on the pill) a while before that and it wasn't a problem before, nor had I ever had that problem with any previous boyfriend. The doc said it could be perfumes and dyes in detergents, soaps, etc… anything that comes in contact with my lady parts. I switched everything, ate less sugar and white flours, tried EVERYTHING. I still got them every two months.
This went on for about a year and a half, and the whole time my boyfiend swore it was him. Then I thought back to when I first started getting them. I had made a change in the toilet paper I bought. I had started using Scott Naturals, which contains recycled material. I switched back to what I had used before (the plain Scott) and the infections stopped.
SO, if you have tried everything, change your toilet paper. It's worth a try.

I agree with the toilet paper thing, too….as well as all the other posts… from personal experience, it does make a difference.
Also, make sure at night, your aren't getting to hot while sleeping, and sweating a bit. I have to really watch not using the fleece type blankets that don't breathe well.

You girls should try doing a candida cleanse…it will clean all the yeast out of you…go to a health store like vitamin shoppe/gnc or a health food store like Whole Foods and pick it up…its about $30 and you do it for 2 weeks.
Also, you have got to make sure that your mans hands are clean!! If he has dirt under his fingernails you will get infected!!!

Getting antibiotic prescriptions for BV and Yeast infection is only a temporary fix. The bacteria and fungus will come back stronger within 2-4 period cycles. I'm also a gyni and urology nurse so I'm trained at this. The natural stuff will work so much better in the long run. After a course of BV antibiotics, 80% of women will get a fungus infection from the antibiotic also wipeing out the good bacteria in our vag. These BV and Yeast infection is caused by an overgrowth of the bad bacteria. Every woman has some bad bacteria in their vag but good bacteria must be more abundant to keep things in good control. The natural stuff works the best and if you have recurrent infections, your must keep on top of it and maintain abundance of the good bacteria.
So these are the natural things you can do to get things under control for BV;
– Natural antibiotic tea tree oil tampon soaks. -In a small dish add 20 drops of tea tree oil with 60 mls of boiled water. Allow the water to reach room temperature the add the 20 drops of tea tree oil. Soak a tampon in this solution and insert into the vag. Leave in overnight . Do this for 5-7 nights.
And/or 1/2 cup of apple cider in a 1000 ml of warmed down boiled water. Buy a round or square basin from the dollar store that you can get your bum and sit in. Soark for 20-30 minutes. Good bacteria thrives in acidic environment.
After the 5-7 nights , you must now add good bacteria down there by purchasing plain yoguart . Make sure it is plain that contains live lactobacillius acidophlus. Buy some disposable cheap medical gloves from the dollar store and add it into the fingers of the gloves and freeze it. Each night for the 2nd week, cut off a finger of the gloves and insert the yoguart as high up as you can when you go to bed. It can get messy once the yoguart melts so try to do this when you laydown to sleep for the night. And where a pantyliner to prevent oozing everywhere. Towel in the bed to lie down on is also a good idea. It is also good when the yoguart melts on the labia. It will feel cold but some say it feel like a great relief.
To maintain good bacteria maintenance, It is good to do 2-3 nights of these once a month after your period.
The apple cider soaks and yoguart inserts also works well for yeast infections but you must first do the candida cleanse like Lizzy liz said. I

Other inportant tips;
-Lubricants and sperm is very alkaline which the bad bacteria thrives on. If you allow your significant other to come inside of you , try to wash it out with plain water after. And if possible, do your apple cider rinse at the next convinient time.
-Eating plain yoguart helps more for the digestive tract but you must insert it inside the vag for greater treatment.
– You can also insert a lactobacillus acidophilus pill or opened up capsule into the vag overnight while you are asleep. This can be purchased in the health food store meant to be swallowed for intestinal or digestive health. But for yeast or BV, inserting it inside will work so much better since our stomach acid will kill or excrete out most of the bacteria and will not make it down to the vag where it is needed.1 Billion organism pill is the minimun count you must purchase. The higher the organisium the better.
– Folic acid pills will also help maintain an acidic vag.
-Eat lots of greens.
– Letting your vag aired out when you are not doing any treatments is also good. Meaning sleeping with no undies.
Hope this helps. These treatments have helped me and many others. There are some great websites/forum/support of women using these natural treatments out there.

Thank you Joni and everyone else who responded!! I am relieved so many other people have the same things going on I was beginning to feel dirty/like a weirdo. I have a gyno appointment next tuesday but tomorrow I will go out and get these remedies and try them. I did take an over the counter one night vagisil medication thing and it seems to have alleviated the symptoms for now but since this has been continuing for so long I will be sure I keep up with the maintenence you girls are suggesting. I'm hoping between keeping up with it and finally getting it treated together I will see some improvement. I don't ever get sperm inside me because I'm always paranoid about getting preggo even though I'm on the pill so I am positive it's not a reaction to sperm but that's really the only thing I can rule out for sure, I do have a lot of the other requisites for recurring BV/yeast infections such as being on oral contraceptives, being of child bearing age, etc. I have never had any allergic skin reactions or sensitivites to anything up until this point in my life so I don't think it would be that…but I know body chemistry always changes and it's possible to develop allergies to anything at any time so I will try to keep track of what soaps and toilet paper I've been using. Thanks again ladies this information is so helpful!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yay for healthy lady businesses 🙂

@ glitterhips: You should NOT EVER feel like a weirdo about going through something as common as a yeast infection. I don't think I've ever met a woman who HASN'T had a yeast infection. I think some women are just more sensitive "down there" than others. I think the first and foremost thing to do is try and address where you speculate the infection is starting from. In this case, you say, the possibility is your boyfriend. So, it's a good idea to have him wash up before hand. But, you should be careful that he's not washing up down there with a soap that has a lot of added fragrance. You could be reacting to, very simply, the soap he uses. Some men even use baby powder "down there" after they shower. You just never know. Stuff like this, could be a sure cause of a yeast infection. I am very sensitive to this kind of stuff, so I know. :o) I can't wear scented tampons, pads, or panty-liners. I wash all of my underwear, in hot, using DREFT and no fabric softener. See? I can't even use regular laundry detergent! It's crazy. I make sure to spray on perfume AFTER I'm completely dressed. If I spray it on naked and open my legs to walk around… I'm DOOMED!!!! LOL!!!!
In addition, I do other maintenance, as others have mentioned; acidophilus (which is a probiotic, and bacteria naturally found throughout the human body). I take 2 on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. The name of the kind I take is Probioplus DDS, and I get it from a natural health food store close to my house. I did look online though for you, and found it here:

You MUST keep it refrigerated. It will have amazing benefits, regarding your issue. I am telling you, it will make SUCH a difference!!!!! It's imperative for any woman who gets yeast infections. I just cannot stress it enough!! It will actually aid in digestion and boost your immune system as well. It's great stuff! Yogurt is probably one of the most well known foods that contain acidophilus. Just buy plain, and sweeten it with all natural maple syrup if it's too bitter for you.
Just throwing this out there too, even though you didn't mention it; if you are having itching due to vaginal dryness, Vitamin E will really aid with that. I get it, off and on sometimes, and the Vitamin E really helps!!!
Sorry this was so long! Good luck and I hope everything gets better for you! I know what you are going through!

Not to sidetrack this, but Dawnella….where have you been? You are just down the street from my work!! We MUST get together some time to play!

I am just back from the gyno today with similar issues, I feel terrible about it. (Cannot believe I'd even admit that!!!!) The idea of battling this crap forever is so freakin' depressing. The doc used a speculum and took some swabs which was nowhere near as bad as I expected but she said if it is recurring yeast (not just down there, but in the colon too) that we need to do a Candida Cleanse and diet for 6-8 weeks on top of plenty of probiotics. She said this is far more common than I believed it was and that the majority of her patients have gone through similar things, yet when I google it, apparently it is only 5% of women who get this recurring. My doc does not agree, she thinks this is very, very common and that we shouldn't have to live with it. Even by the massive replies to this thread I think shows how common it must be.
My results will be back in a week or so but even the idea of trying this Cleanse and the probitotics and then it NOT WORKING is terrifying. I think because I've lived with this nonsense for so long I can't even imagine that it'll ever go away. I suffer horribly from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (very severely in fact, I've been to the hospital twice, bleeding, cramping, shaking with pain and even needing time off work where I'll just curl up and sleep for days) and the doc reckons that colon health has everything to do with yeast in the body. I felt like a gross, freak going in today but she said it all comes from having a sick colon and that it's totally normal and that we'll get to the bottom of it and fix it.
I know it sounds silly but THANK GOD I have a doctor like her. I put off those examinations for years and she made it so freakin' easy today. I wouldn't be scared of it anymore, it didn't even hurt. I just really hope she is right and that this will go away eventually. You probably all know how much something like this can damage self esteem and relationships. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif

And I'm really sorry if that post seems a bit whingey, I didn't mean it to come across so negatively https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif I only just got diagnosed with polycystic ovaries a few weeks back too so not feeling as bright as I usually do. But I'm sure it'll all work out. *fingers crossed*

I feel your pain hun, not just in the chronic yeasties, but it other areas that affect my life. You'd think at 25 I'd be totally healthy, but noooooo!
The last time I went to the doc about a potential yeast infection, she said that constipation can be a huge factor in chronic yeast infections, so she told me to eat 1/4 cup of ground flaxseed per day and use milk of magnesias as needed. I am super dilagent about wearing cotton grannie panties, washing with non-soap on my "lady bits," washing up after doing the deed, blow-drying my girlie parts after showering, I take 2 different probiotics (acidophilus and "fem-dophilus"), taking azo yeast if I feel any irritation there, and taking vitamins to keep my immune system happy.
Hopefully you can fix it, and not have it take forever to find out what the source is. It took my docs 10 years to figure out that I had epilepsy, and I think I may be figuring out what is causing my chronic debilitating headaches that I have had since high school (from the help of Veener's, not doctors.)

I don't know if this is relevant/already said, but I have heard that shaving or waxing the whole lady garden, so that there's no hair at all, can lead to many different health problems, including yeast infections. Unfortunately, that hair is down their for a really good reason!
I've never had any problems with my lady business, besides HPV from my first (and only) ex boyfriend, who cheated on me. Yep. Got surgery and everything, and apparently I'm all cleared up 😉
I hope you guys feel better soon!

wow sensualscimitar you've had a rough time!! Hope it all gets better soon!
Does anybody know if it's normal to feel an irritated/stinging sensation in the hours following a high swab test? I fell asleep for about an hour but woke up due to the discomfort. Also could it be a reaction to the antibio cream? Has anybody found themselves particularly sensitive on their first day of treatment? Unsure if it's just the infection, the cream or the speculum/swab earlier today OR a combination of it all!

Try using Garlic!! This was something my midwives suggested when I had problems with yeast while pregnant. I didn't want to use any meds so I used garlic and I worked!!! All you do is….before bed, take a needle and thread through one peeled garlic clove, the long way. Make sure there is a big knot at the end then shove that sucker up there… eww I know. Go to sleep and have dreams of Italian food lol Wake up and use the thread to pull it out. Make sure the needle is clean and the thread of course. Use this method for 3-5 nights (always using a new piece of garlic) I did this along with the vinegar bath to sooth the itch. I have been pretty yeast free since I stopped using the over the counter stuff and just used garlic.
