  • What do you guys eat before a pole workout/pole practice?

Posted by Bendy Bella on November 7, 2014 at 10:58 am

I used to be a cardio advocate so while my endurance is decent enough, I find it hard to have enough gusto to get through the strength part of my workout which means my flexibility and freestyle is improving but my strength still sucks and I’m starting to think one problem is that I don’t eat properly or enough before my workout…

What do you guys eat before hardcore training? lol
how soon do you eat before your workout?

Eating is definitely important for me regardless of whether it’s strength or cardio. I tend to go for something sweet which is good enough to last me 1-1.5 hours, but generally have whatever my body feels like. If it’s meat that I want, then that’s what I take with some carbohydrates. I find coffee helps but I avoid that if the workout is in the evening. Some find dairy make them sluggish, but I am OK so maybe try it with soy or black if that’s a problem? I try to eat about 30 minutes to 1.5 hours before a workout.

Usually lean meat or eggs. I typically pole around dinner time so I try to eat enough to carry me through the workout successfully. I hate the taste of protein bars, so I could never get into it.

You want to eat carbs (low fat, low protein) before a workout — and a combination of protein and carbs after, to restore your muscles’ glycogen (carbohydrate) stores and to repair and rebuild the muscle.

Yes! If it’s really warm… Or for me, hot chocolate if it’s in the evening and it’s cold! Banana is always handy too before or after.

For me, it works to snack throughout the session, rather eat before. I usually pack a banana, trail mix (raw and unsalted), a boiled egg, and fresh pressed juice or grapes for a quick natural sugar pick me up.

    Banana-potassium for muscle cramps
    Egg-protein
    Raw nuts-protein
    Natural sugar-fast energy

On pole class evenings I try to have protein at lunch, and not over-eat. About 2 hours before class I always have an orange. I’m comfortable with that. Inverting within an hour or so after I’ve eaten is a horrible feeling. I take a bottle of fortified water to class with me.

Poling is a far more intense workout than other sports. Any of you that have poled to a three minute song can attest to the stamina and strength required to continuously workout on the vertical jungle gym. You have to eat. Finding the right balance of when to eat, what to eat, and how much is a trial and error method used by most people.

I workout in the morning. Each day starts with two cups of coffee. I’ll workout for 30 minutes to one hour, or 30 minutes plus a 3 – 4 mile walk. Breakfast comes next; fruit, yogurt, cereal, or eggs. Not all at the same time. I vary it and concentrate on portion control. Eating healthy, portion control on an overall ongoing basis is far more important to me than concentrating on eating something specific prior to a hard workout. Your body will tell you when it wants more.

Yes this a tough one! I am usually rushing to my pole class straight from work so timing is always tricky for me. And i feel weak and woozy on occasions if it’s been a hectic day.. =< If I haven't eaten for a few hours I will munch a seed bar for some quick energy , I also read the other day 2 bananas an hour before workout is really good =]

Yes Polekat, weak and woozy is def the feeling and it’s hindered my progress unfortunately. I think things will be much better once I finish my last semester at school and can dedicate more time to planning my nutrition and just have more time in general but thanks for the input everybody, I will definitely be picking up more fruits and proteins and I forgot how much I loved boiled eggs so I’ll be eating plenty of those as well!

Thanks again for reminding me why I love it here!

Lean meat, eggs, or a protein bar if I am going to class straight after work. Sometimes an open-faced almond butter sammich with bananas does the trick if I’m feeling a sweet tooth.

I have to fit my workouts in before I get too far into the day! So, I usually have oatmeal, with fruit and honey, and also an egg on an english muffin. Sometimes I have green tea as well. I can’t pole on an empty tummy!

I have to rush to class straight from work so my snack has been an apple or two and some almond butter. It’s about the only thing I’ve found that doesn’t give me indigestion. My workouts are usually two 1 hour classes back to back and This usually carries me through it all.
