Hi Blueeyes! I love that move, but I don’t know the name of it. I’ve been trying to get into that move too, but am not yet getting it exactly right. The grips are on the top of the bicep by the shoulder along with part of the armpit, diagonally across the back to part of the hip/side, and across the inner thigh. This move is odd because it requires the back to be bent around the pole, from what I have been able to tell with my tries at it. I did a sideways version of this in my December challenge, but the front-facing version is prettier. If you get this move, please share all your pointers with me! I’m going to keep working at it too.

I was asking about this same move about a week ago from someone’s pic I saw. . . . she called it the "chantel". Seeing the video of it done is so much better than figuring it out from a pic, lol! But I agree it is harder than it appears. Good luck! Post your attempts please!

    I think its called the chopstick but Jenyne is doing it one handed. It is so pretty. http://ver3.studioveena.com/lessons/view/1819" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The chopstick is pretty!! but its different from the one im talking about, but i wanted to learn this one as well… so thank you for posting that video!
The chantel, hmm.. i wish i could find something on youtube about it, but i cant.. thank you though!
Its a very twisted move, the pole goes down your back slanted & you have to be pretty flexible to get into it from what I can tell through my attempts, ill post a video on my attempts so you all can get a better idea & put more input in, thanks a bunch ladies!!

Yeah blueyes. . . the vid that was posted IS different from the ‘chantel’. I haven’t found vids of it, but in the next week or two it will be a move I’ll be working on too. . . Keep me posted on your vids and progress!!

The grip in the bicep/armpit area is not to be confused with the one you use for peter pan or the swan move. That’s the back of your armpit, whereas this is the front.

Think of how your body is positioned for a pretzel. Your back is wrapped around the pole is the same way for this move. In fact, if she bent her bottom leg, and held on the pole with her top hand, instead of armpit, she would basically be doing a pretzel. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

You also use the top of your thigh skin as a previous poster mentioned. Example of this is in the airwalk.

Wow, you put that so well!!
It IS just like doing a pretzel!

    Wonderful! Thanks!

Thank you for putting up that picture Georgiamarie! I didnt even think of it like the pretzel, that will help me, i think i need to get into it differently than i have been… maybe i should start with a pretzel & THEN extend my legs out & let go with my arm – it confuses me when i try to do it haha, ill post a video hopefully tomorrow, thanks again everyone, i still wish we could figure out the darn name of it! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_scratch.gif

Yes, if you go into it from a pretzel though you have to twist even more so than usual. You’ll need to bend forwards and across the pole more, to get the front of your armpit or your bicep of that top arm to make contact with the pole. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I haven’t tried this myself so I don’t know how successful you will be – but the theory is all there haha!

Hi Everyone! I’m reluctant to compare this to the hands-free pretzel in spite of the obvious similarities. I think the important differences include: 1) the arm grip is not just in a different place, but is on the opposite arm, 2) the hip/side is not on the pole, but rather the small of the back is curled across it. I essentially think of the pretzel as a Scorpio performed in an upright position, because all the body grips are identical. But I think the Chopsticks move that Joni posted is more similar to this move than the pretzel is.

It would be possible to get into this position from a pretzel, however the top hand would have to be released and slid to the opposite side of the pole, after the torso was tilted from front-facing to sideways. Then the ankle could be kicked off the pole and the leg elongated. But I think it would be easier to get the torso and gripping arm in position from a basic pole sit than from a pretzel.

I’ve been calling this move a "Zorro slash," by the way, since the gripping arm, torso, and gripping leg produce a skewed Z shape. But somehow "Chantel" seems kind of fitting. I would love to find out what Jenyne is calling the move. Jessalyn performed this move in one of Jungle Cat’s recent videos on YouTube, which was my first exposure to it. Maybe she knows a name for it…!

I took a workshop with Jenyne a few months ago and if I remember correctly she called this a twisted ballerina.

Yeah Stellar, i think im going to keep trying from a seated position, id have to do more adjusting from the pretzel… & yeah, i saw it the video where Jessalynn did it too, she did awesome.
The twisted ballerina? hmm… i think that fits

Hey ladies! Guess what?? I GOT IT! Ugh… it was a pain in the rear, but i did it… it doesnt look near as good as Jenyne’s & Jessalynn’s… but at least I understand the hold so I can work on extending my legs out more. Im *hoping* to put together a video of my trial & errors & explain what I did to make it work… butttt it is Christmas Eve & I dont want to spend it on here for an hour or so making the video… so i’ll probably have it up the day after Christmas or possibly before… but i just wanted to share this news with you all!!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Here’s the method I used to get into this pose.

From a pole sit, I duck my torso down as far as I can get it, and put my lower hand on the pole first. I then arch my back as far as I can get it, using my lower hand to guide my torso position, and reach for the pole with my top hand. With both my hands on the pole, I pull myself up and around a little, to twist so that my back is on the pole, and not my side/hip, and then position my top arm with bicep on the pole. Then I straighten out my legs, which slightly slows the spin while locking the body in place, and then let go with my lower hand. It’s rough, so if any of you know an easier way to get into this pose I’d love to try it. Otherwise I’ll have to keep using this method until I can get it looking a little bit more graceful!

Am loving this move right now, though!

It’s a BEAUTIFUL move. I haven’t tried it with the bottom leg extended, but I’m going to soon give it a go. It’s quite a twist to get the outside arm around the pole. Be careful of the shoulder. You need good shoulder flexibility.

I also did a workshop with her a couple months ago. She taught me this one too.

She calls it a twisted ballerina with the lower leg still supporting but then it becomes a flying ballerina when the lower leg is extended off the pole. I am pretty sure that is what she said.

Stellarmotion did a great job of displaying how to get into it here, more slowly and closer up than Jenyne’s video..
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGMnb1RDPT4

I can see where this looks like twisted ballerina… Jenyne taught us this one but I dont remember it very well… I do remember it was a lot easier to get into than what David is doing to get into it… so it seems like if you try to go into it straight from twisted ballerina as opposed to bending down and twisting your arm up the pole, you’d fall off?

Does anyone have a video of jenyne or anyone doing twisted ballerina for comparison?

I tried this move last night and only got about half way there, I got the pole around my upper arm but not in my armpit, so it didn’t seem stable enough to let go. Going to try again as soon as I get over being sick.

Hey MissJulie, if you look at my page… theres only one video I posted & I got into the flying ballerina from twisted ballerina. I found this easier. I found that the grip is NOT in my armpit, but on my upper bicep… I found that my arm wouldnt stay in place, when i attempted to release my bottom foot… my whole body would twist causing my bicep to lose its position of grip. (if that mades any sense) This is why I do this move on spinny mode… because my body weight shifts the pole, not my arm positioning. I have yet to try it on static again, but I hope this helps!

i just had a total epiphany with this move last night. IT MATTERS WHICH WAY YOU SPIN!!! i’m taking my pole to the left side, so i should be starting with the left arm up for the climb. i’ve been doing it the opposite way with only 10% success rate…now i know why DUH! momentum helps you get into it if you spin the right way =b.
