So I'm doing the splits in 6 weeks thingy, and have completed my first week. I've always felt I'll never be flexible, but the improvement over the last week was nice enough to keep me going on this!

well at the time I was only doing the warmup/cool down stretches at karate and warmup at vaulting. There was a bit of a trial and error phase sometime after I started competing in vaulting. Trying to follow the latest fads…but that only resulted in getting injured and having to take time off training.
I had a good chat with my personal trainer friend who was the most flexible person on the national team when she was still vaulting competitively at one point and she explained everything. After applying what she taught me I made significant progress seemingly over night ( in reallity it was about three months between fugly jazzsplits and when this picture was taken.) http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/3174/phonepictures080.jpg
By sancharavaultrg at 2010-05-08I wish I had stayed consitant with it but 2010 was just generally a really bi-polar year for me. and I made no progress in building strength or flexibility during my battle with Annorexia Athletica 🙁 no matter how many hours or how correctly I trained.
I'm going to bug someone to take new pictures at the end of practice tomorow. 🙂 we'll consider that my starting point for all intents and purposes. ;P

@ Sanchara-
Do tell this secret advice that your personal trainer friend told you that helped make a significant improvement… You've hooked me, I'm dying to know…Also, I couldn't get your pics to come up.

nothing particularily special.
Eating a proper diet high in dark vegitables, Stretching after strength training, combinic static passive and dymnanic active stretches and using the technique of contracting and releaseing the oposite muscles while doing static stretches. PNF stretching when I had a partner to help out… The biggest things tho were correct alignment and that sort of thing to prevent getting hurt. Also that the pre-split stretches were far more important than actually stetching the splits. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVq9nL_tLbo (1:14 – 1:35 in this video)

Starting to get my blog up and running – I've decided to make Saturday Fleibility Check In Day, so here's my first one…
http://www.she-beast.net/2011/06/25/saturday-flexy-check-in/
I didn't do a great job describing to my husband how to take the pics so I'll make sur ethey are more side on next time.

I've always wondered about the back leg in a split, i tend to have mine facing down. Almost got my box split, it's so hard!
-
The more your back leg is facing down, the more squared you probably are.
-
Only vinter and kobajo had true sq hips in this thread. Ladies sq those hips! Back leg needs to go into the floor, knee side down.

Deleted UserApril 30, 2012 at 6:42 pmHi Ladies!!! I wondered if someone could look at the stretching pics I just uploaded and tell me if I'm doing these right or wrong.
I read through the entire thread and I think I'm doing these stretches wrong, I'm not sure if I'm squaring my hips or not. How long should you hold the stretch when you do them??
-
It looks like you're not quite fully squaring your hips, your knee should be facing down, not to the side. I've been doing Veena's stretches and she holds them for 15 seconds in 3 different phases of each stretch (mild stretch, medium, and full), so 45 sec's total for each one. At the end she has you do the splits and hold for as long as you're comfortable. Hope that helps : / Other than the squaring issue they look good to me.

There is a huge discussion regarding positioning for the splits in 6 weeks thread and also on the differece between jazz splits and staright splits. If you are ever planning on doing this in a routine wearing shoes you probably will never be able to get square hips because your shoes will get in the way.

I have been working on my splits for a little over a year and I got my jazz split on my left side about 6 months ago. Long story short, I started training for square splits and couldn't go down. After taking a workshop with Marlo, I learned a simple trick that got me all the way down on my left side right away and recently, all the way down on my right side (in square splits). She taught us to lift our arms over our heads. To me, it concentrates the weight in the core, which is where you want to stretch. It worked for me and I wish I knew about it when I first started stretching because I think I would have been down in splits quicker.

I'm going to try that tomorrow when I stretch 🙂 I tried squaring my hips last night when I re-stretched but my knee was very uncomfortable so I didn't stretch for long. Is that normal guys??

It shouldn't be painful, but you may have to back off of the stretch a bit, if your going from not squared hips to squared. You will feel a more intense stretch with squared hips! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_heart1.gif

I got my floor split back (finally!!!) at the weekend. Cannot believe how much work it's going to take to do one not against the floor though ie. in jade. It's weird I feel like I'm stretching like a maniac but in the pictures I'm not even close to getting it!!

After 2 1/2 years of stretching, yoga, barre classes, aerial training, and pole. I have finally achieve my front splits! I noticed that when I do a combo of yoga and barre warm ups my flexibility increased much faster – so lots of lunge stretches! Just a few inches away from my middle splits now! Whooo for the Christmas Splits challenge!
