I had really *hoped* it would feel a little like advanced plank since it grips in a similar spot……but no. I have a passelful of new bruises on my legs LOL. I was surprised at how secure it was though, and hopefully I can start dropping into it a bit more efficiently because wow, that was NOT pretty.

Both of my legs hurt today….luckily I have not bruised. I think I am past the point of bruising but I will say that every time I cross my legs when I sit down it is a little painful.

Is the best way to get into superman from inverting, like Veena does in her lessons?

Not really sure how you can get into superman without inverting.

Boomlou (sp) has a video on youtube of all sorts of different ways to get into superman. I think that this might be it but I cannot access YT from work so I am not positive. If that is not it then that is definitely her channel.

I got into it yesterday from a side climb because I am off inverts for a few weeks, but it took some finagling, LOL.

Oh god, sounds hard. Is there a way to try it really close to the ground. I keep trying to think of how i might get into it in my head.. but it just doesn’t seem possible.. lol (this move is way out of my league, but would be interested to give a little go!)

Redke71 has a Superman Ins and Outs video on youtube as well where she shows different ways to get in and out of it. I can’t get on youtube from work, or I’d find the link for you.

I haven’t really tried working on the superman (cuz it hurts like bloody hell) but I suppose it’s time….sigh…..I’m not looking forward to it at all. LOL

Thanks sissybuns. Yea I found that vid. God she’s amazing! She gets into it from what looks like a thigh hold in the first bit. Probably looks a lot more doable than it is, but may try it later if i’m feeling brave (aka stupid!) https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_razz.gif

Someone has a video somewhere of just doing the hold from the ground. Basically you have your back to the pole, grab with right or left arm (depending on how you are going to get up), back your legs as far back as you can while leaning as far forward as you can but still hanging on with one arm. At some point you need to trust yourself enough and just lift your feet off the ground. I strongly suggest not having the pole all the way to your hoo hoo and having large pillows or a crash mat down so you do not do a face dive. Oh yeah, thumb UP.

    Does that make sense??

That makes sense, still sounds hard though https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif I think I saw a video of someone doing it at one stage actually, it looks easier to invert into it, or maybe thigh hold… Hmmm. Looking forward to trying it!

I would def. recommend practicing this one from the ground for a while, and make sure your pain threshold for things like pole sits, etc., is up there. It HURTS (and that doesn’t just seem to be my opinion, lol), and if you fall, there is not really a way to do it gracefully, I don’t think.

My first attempts were from a handstand. I slid my legs down and walked my hands out as if to do a "pushup" (don’t know the official name) dismount, then reached up and back with dominant hand and took the other hand off the ground. After I realized that 1) it hurt and 2) I could work through the pain, I did it from side climb just a wee bit up the pole, because you have to flip your hips over and catch with your legs at pretty much the same time. The hip flipping, for me anyway, turned out to be a little tricky and will require some work.

Going from a handstand sounds like the easiest way in my opinion. That’s probably the best way to get as low to the ground as you can get.

Yep!! Close to the ground=good. At least until you reconcile yourself with the pain, LOL.

I learned it from almost a half-handspring mount kind of thing… Simpllysweet posted a tutorial for Glitter when she was learning it (around the same time I was trying it, too) so I tried it that way and it worked. Now I prefer to get into it from gemini, because I’m higher up the pole – I would tend to slide off before I got into position if I was too close to the ground.

Simpllysweet must have taken the video down – I’m not finding it here or on YouTube.

Oh, and my butt always seems to stick to the pole when I’m trying to flip my hips over… I have no idea how people make it slide… I’m trying to get up more strength so I can hold myself further away from the pole when I flip the hips.

It always hurt a lot for me because it would pull the skin from closer to the front-ish of my thighs to the pole, so it would end up being an entirely different section of skin than during a pole sit. I’m going to have to go back to basics and do it from the floor so I can get my pain tolerance up… But hey, I’m at least proud I’ve been able to do it up on the pole at all! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif

I am trying to do the superman, emphesis on TRYING! My teacher said to kinda start off doing a really low gemini. So what I was doing, was really getting quite low to the floor with bent knees, then taking my leg up to the gemini position. This way, when I am attempting to get into the superman I am not that far from the floor. I can get myself to the extending my legs bit, i just CANNOT bring myself to flip over. I suffer from sweaty hands, and this move makes me wayyyy too nervous. so I can feel my top hand has NO grip, so i just dont want to flip over cos i now my top hand wont stay on. lol.

    Good luck! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I too learned this move by practicing it from the ground first. However i found it easier to get into position the way that chemgoddess described, rather than from a handstand. And the pain sure is different than that from a plank! Once i was ok with the positioning & got resistant to the pain, it took me forever to be able to get the flipping over part from gemini (like foxy rei said, that was the trickiest part!). I thought that it would’ve been easier from inverted thigh hold, but i still can’t do it that way (maybe i should start trying that again, lol). https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

One last thing i want to say is that it seems like lately many people have been thinking that this should be an easier move than what it really is (not you audball, just saying in general https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif ). For example i’ve heard someone say that they think it’s crazy they can do the butterfly or ckr or something but not the superman, when in fact, superman for MOST people is a lot more difficult than many other moves (of course everyone is different). I personally don’t think it’s ever too early to practice it from the ground. I’m just saying that for the more advanced ways of getting into it, no one should feel like they "should have been able to do it by now" or that there’s something wrong with them if they can’t do it yet.. it’s NOT easy!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/alien.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/bom.gif

My side climb into Superman opened my eyes as to how much trust it takes to flip your hips over and know your leg grip will help catch…and HOLD…you. I figured from side climb I was already sideways, and it was still hard.

There’s a reason I see it being referred to as a nemesis so often, LOL.

The pain will get better as your body adjusts. Give it time, girls, and don’t give up!

I will add that if you cannot pull yourself upright on the pole from an invert do not attempt this move.

Going from outside leg hang I found it easier to go into side V first and then flip the hips (if this helps anyone).

I’ll have to try the V then flip next time I’m on the pole. Thanks for the tip!

Edited b/c my first sentence made absolutely no sense whatsoever lol

The picture that chemgoddess1 put on is how I learnt it as well. I just kept my bottom hand on until I was sure I had the grip and flip bit right because it hurts like a …… (well I don’t know what because it just ruddy hurts!) https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_evil.gif And it’s eeeeeeeeeevil as well because I learnt it, walked away to come back to it in a few weeks or something then had to relearn it all over again! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_twisted.gif

The thing with the thigh hold is ok as long as you trust your grip. The difficult part of that, I found, was bringing my body round so I was facing the pole rather than having it in my armpit. If you can do that and still be hanging from your thighs then you can walk your hands up the pole to get yourself in a position where you can reach round with the hand you want at the top.

(Does any of that waffle make sense????)

It is possible to try it from ground, lay on floor belly down and scoot back towards ple so that it is inbetween your legs, then using yor weakest arm push off the ground, grip pole with strong arm, obviously squeeze the thighs hard! and then push your feet off floor behind you and see how it feels. It gets you used to the pain and where the pole sits while you are in this position. You could also try to get into superman from inverted pike, I am in the process of mastering superman and think this way is easier for me. See link for a good superman tutorial and the way of getting into superman from floor. Good luck with it xx https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cat.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cat.gif
