So ever since I finally got over the hurdle of shoulder mounting in the correct position so as not to roll over my collar bone, I've kinda been drilling it during practice. I had worked on my shoulder mount bounce for the Michigan showcase. While I was there, Alethea Austin's workshop consisted of several shoulder mount tricks. Then I did more shoulder mounting in my practices and yesterday I taught a few shoulder mount tricks in the advanced class. I'm pretty sure I've overworked my trapezius, or finally put too much pressure on it. After class yesterday I had a knot right next to where the pole rests for my shoulder mount. I have pole burn there, too. I couldn't do much about it because I had to work after my pole classes. Today it's very tender to the touch but the inflammation isn't quite as bad. I am currently icing it and I've taken ibuprofen. It seems like this should heal in a few days, as it feels like a muscle tissue pain, not a tendon or ligament pain. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this from overdoing the shoulder mount, or if anyone has any quick healing advice. Thanks! 🙂

hm. what tricks were you doing? usually new stuff tweaks you out more then stuff you have 100% confidently.

i've never felt that from a SM, but i will usually rub the skin a little raw with the pole which forces me to stop….

Someone else on the site had posted about developing a knot where they shoulder mount. Not sure whatever happened, if it resolved it’s self. Are you making sure you’re mounting right by the neck?

Yes, I have been paying very close attention to where the pole is when I'm mounting. I used to do it with the pole too far out on my shoulder, but I have corrected that (because I was smooshing my collar bone! ouchies!). Based on the location of my current awesome pole kiss, I've kept the pole quite close to my neck.

Most recently I've been doing aerial shoulder mount, shoulder mount V with wavy legs, shoulder mount V with "crazy legs" (Alethea's term), and "Bad Idea #4" (another thing Alethea taught) which involved doing a hop in the shoulder mount V (enough to release the pull of gravity a little bit) let go of the top hand for a split second and catch the leg under the arm before returning it to the pole. It is in the first clip of my most current practice video. The move is a bit scary… I mean I can do it without freaking out but I am probably tensing quite a bit.

Update: Ibuprofen is working for the pain quite nicely. 🙂

The eggbeater and crazy legs is probably difficult enough that you’re thinking a lot more about your legs then your trap as you’re doing it– pretty easy to over-pull in those 🙂 the leg trap shouldn’t involve extra pressure, just the release, so I wouldn’t think it’s from that unless when you regrip you are pulling extra hard Bc your fear causes you to overcompensate. For that one, I think a good way to practice (and realize how long you can take to actually keep your hand off) is to walk your hands and body down the pole in shoulder mount… Does scrape the trap quite a bit though!

Update: Feeling a little better today and I have full range of motion, still tender to the touch. Just finished a shift at work involving pushing large tables around, so it’s a bit more sore. I’m going to ice it again this evening and gently stretch.
