Request for Vid Clip Breakdowns
Posted by newschik on May 13, 2015 at 3:06 pmThis came up in the thread on Quick Lessons. Did you ever watch a move on instagram or YouTube and not be able to get it? Veena suggested starting a thread on the subject. Here’s my candidate for an easy looking vid that, for the LIFE OF ME, I can’t break down and do…HELP!

Perfect thank you!!!! This will make it easier for me as well!

Breaking down that video… isn’t easy!
So, what I’m seeing is a buildup of momentum through the longer walking steps, into a “pencil spin” with open legs (when she’s facing directly forward into the pole, like a pull up, with spinning and open legs). One hand high, one lower.
And then, she turns and goes into a back hook spin, which would be the first thing to practice. This is partly facilitated by her hand placement, as well.
THEN it gets tricky- her knee stays in place, but she brings it up into her chest, and points her outside foot up toward the walls around her, rather than the floor.
Bringing hands down (by going top hand down so that it is just under her hooked knee, and then next hand), which allows that straight leg to begin pointing more upward. From here, it’s a quick re-adjustment of body and opening of legs, into a chopper.
And then the ground.Hopefully that helps, Newschik 🙂

Oh thats similar to the Suicide back hook… Though that move ends in a scorpio…. and the ones you posted has more of a running start…. BUT practicing the Suicide Back Hook might help you get it?

I don’t know?!? Maybe.

Hi Allyson- That was really close – AND very pretty !!! – thank you…how can you get to chopper though…?
-
No idea! I just thought that video was slightly slower and easier to follow.
Btw, I just realized you can slow down YouTube videos by changing the speed… 😠thank helps some.
I still prefer veena talking me through things though. So I’ll always vote for a quick lesson when it’s available! I don’t always connect what I’m seeing to what I’m doing.. when I hear “sweep with the outer leg” or something it clicks so much better than watching a mess of arms and legs flying around the pole (even in slow motion) 😋
-
Changing the speed is an option I never knew about…Thank you SO MUCH!!! I am teaching tonight and am taking my laptop to the studio to see if I can work on this now that I can slow it down… 🙂 Love the helpful members here!!!
-
Oh, I don’t get that option! I only get the image quality… huh. That’s really strange. Maybe an American thing? IDK

Thanks to AllysonKendal’s “slow down the vid” suggestion, I was able to see that when the inside hand moves, the dancer changes her hand position – so her thumb is down and under the hooked leg….and then the chopper becomes possible. And I got it tonight!!! Thanks sooooo much to all who helped!
-
Awesome, I googled it and just needed to enable HTML5 on my firefox browser. Thanks so much, this is so helpful 😀
-
I really like this move! Gonna try and work it out tonight.

I’d love to see some tips and a breakdown for Devil’s Point Shuffle. I love when its linked together on each side (like an advanced version of a gemini climb) but MANNNNNN, just getting that second invert is tough!
-
Cool. 😎 Anything you guys want me to consider I need a video or photo of. I train alone and tend to focus on coming up with my own things, so I don’t know the names of everything out there lol 😀😀
-
Is this the move you’re looking for a breakdown on Allyson??
-
Thanks V!
So here is my instructors video of the Devils Point Shuffle…. https://instagram.com/p/p3xzTrE0Gp/
I actually couldn’t find a video of anyone else linking them together like this (when I googled it people seems to do one then invert to scorpio or something.)Here is AA doing that:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKinE7klbEEWe’ve been working on it, But getting the 2nd invert is tough. I even start on my weaker side so to end up on my stronger side. (I can usually aerial invert ok on both sides)
I feel like there might be one tip or trick I’m missing.. maybe the right time to switch the hands or get the momentum going… Sigh. 🙂
-
Yup newschik!
I love the look of it linked together like in the instagram video I posted…
But even if i could do it just the once Like Aerial Amy or Alethea Austin (just realized they are both AAs, :P) Then I could work up to getting it on both sides. -
Oh and I just re-watched Alethea doing in on spin, so fast! Ahhhhh! That looks so cool too.
-
The instagram vid clearly defines the needs of the move: the ability to have both arms strong for that “reach down the pole push” as well as strong knee hangs. I’ve never worked on this move, but I will start. Thanks for the move suggestion, Allyson!
-
I should get a video of me trying… It’s ok(ish) until I need to turn and get the pole on the other side and invert. Like the momentum is working against me instead of for me… And you have to raise the hand up at some point and I just think I can’t get the timing right. :/ let me know if you have better luck.
-
Ok I recorded both of the moves requested, do you still want me to break them down for you guys? I also have 2 other variations for the suicide back hook spin!
-
Suicide back hook went up yesterday https://www.studioveena.com/lessons/view/555b9449-14c4-4b80-ae65-281c0a9aa0eb and I’ve got the Shuffle recorded, and I will post sometime later this week. I must confess I had never tried the DP Shuffle before and you will need to have VERY strong inverts on both sides to pull off more than one pass on this combo.
