I totally agree it should be an Olympic sport. First of all I don’t think a lot of people realize how much strength it takes to be a talented pole dancer, and I think if it was in the Olympics hopefully people wouldn’t be so weird about it and it would be seen as more of a skilled sport than something so taboo as it is now. Just today I was thinking about how it’s so similar to figure skating because of the body momentum you need to spin in both skating and pole dancing. I don’t care what category it gets put in, I just hope it gets there one day.

They are talking about it being considered vertical gymnastics. I’m hoping that it will get in. I would be interested to see the very talented women that are out there get a little bit of recognition for the blood, sweat, and tears. However, there are those who think pole dancing consists of grinding ageist a pole and joke that the next olympic sport should be sex and what not… I find those people to be narrow minded and making rash decisions without proper knowledge.

As far as I know there are over 500 signatures to get pole dancing in the 2012 London Olympics. Ultimately it is up to the olympic comity… The let BMX Biking in as an olympic sport so I think we stand a good chance. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

I would think that before pole dance/vertical gymnastics could be approved for the Olympics, it would have to be presented in a more organized manner- for example- like having official names for all the moves so that judging/rating could be fair and objectively performed. Also, the different spins, holds, inverts, and moves would have to be more clearly defined (of course, there will still be room for creativity). If this is accomplished, I think pole fitness will be finally recognized as a legitimate art/sport and stand a greater chance of entering the Olympic Games. Let’s do it! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_tongue.gif

Felix had been dancing for eight months when she won Miss Australia 2006 and she won 2008 as well. She is amazing and has a wonderful sense of humor too.

We are a looooooooong way from the Olympics. To even be considered as an Olympic sport we need a national/international governing body. We’d also need standardization as azriel said earlier in terms of moves, judging etc.

However, I think the diversity of pole is one of it’s most apppealing factors and standardization could completely change that to pole’s detriment. Think about gymnastics and how much that has changed over the years, floor routines used to involve beautiful dance work with spectacular tumbles, now it involves some odd arm waving while getting to the corner for your next tumble. So I personally don’t want pole to become an Olympic sport (sorry, dont hurt me, hehe) because the whole spirit of the dance could be lost.

On another forum it was mentioned that pole may suit something like the X Games a little more.

Yes, I know Alena has expressed mixed feelings about the possibility of pole as an Olympic sport. That may have something to do with the standardization of governance, judging, and moves.

There are a number of competing organizations and I wonder if they could all get together and form a single approach to the sport…or if that is even a good thing.

I did sign the petition–partly as a matter of respect. I just think pole deserves more exposure–even if the Olympics is not the final destination. I have to admit there is something a little fun about the anarchy in pole dancing. All of the styles and individualism makes it the Golden Age of the dance/sport/hobby!

And I am not the least bit uncomfortable with the exotic/erotic aspect of pole dance. Many of the You-Tube polers are shamelesly erotic, sensual, and sexual in their style of dance and I think that is just fine. I would hate to see that aspect of pole dancing go away (and it probably wouldn’t!) But it would also be nice to have a venue for a straightforwardly athletic exhibition of gymnastic ability.

I spend a lot of time galumpfing around the pole and falling on my butt–nothing erotic about that and I think there should be a place for that, too!

And Olympic or some other quote/ unquote "legitimate" sport broadcasting would make many people who feel insecure about taking up pole feel more comfortable about it.

You know LittleMissLola you have a very good point. I would hate to loose the dance aspect of pole and if it were an Olympic sport the sensual side would surely be gone. I never really thought of that. I do kinda like the fact that its a bit taboo https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_twisted.gif …. I have always like being a bit of a rebel but…on the other hand I don’t want my children growing up and thinking am a crazy sex freak either! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif
I’m not too familiar with the X games so maybe that would be a better fit? All I know is pole dancing is TOUGH and we polers should get credit for that!!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_thumright.gif I guess I’ll have to think about the whole Olympic thing some more..but at this point I don’t think we need to worry too much we’re not even close to being an organized sport. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_hockey.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_basketball.gif

Just the other day I stumbled upon a website with a petition to make pole dancing an official sport in the 2012 Olympics.

Hey that was ME!!! YAY! LOL!

I am only FOR the Olympics because I think conservatives would back off but onthe whole I don’t want to see it become standardized and something taken from our hands made so far out of our reach. None of us would be able to perform or compete – that’s kind of harsh to US if you ask me.

I like the idea of adding pole to something like the X games because pole can stay as diversified as it is and still be appreciated by a mainstream audience thus gaining it’s own recognition for all it’s aspects. My 2 cents.
