New bloke wanting to learn
Posted by Frowning on March 15, 2012 at 9:35 amHello!
I've been interested in learning for a while, having been blown away by seeing some friends perform effortless acrobatics. Sadly there aren't any teachers nearby who do mixed classes, but I have recently come to an arrangement with a good friend of mine who didn't have room in her house for her pole; I host her pole and let her practice whenever she wants, and I get free lessons!
I'm on here looking for advice and tips for more male-oriented moves, as well as strength (core/abs mainly) building techniques so I can beat my friend to Iron X. I've got a few spins under my belt, and am working on a more controlled descent from Chopper, as well as trying to overcome my fear when trying a handspring! I'd be grateful for any advice on exercises/moves I should try.
Thanks!

I would suggest u upload a video so some experts here can see how you do what u describe so they can help you! Welcome to pole world! 🙂

Thanks for the welcome!
I only have the one video so far, and it's terribly short, but I'll link it here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_pOPSxRFHo). I haven't recorded anymore because, well, frankly I'm nervous and new! When I get better and more confident I'll record more.

Welcome!! Yay for Dr Who and male polers. Great first video. Veena's lessons are awesome for strength and new moves.
As far as male oriented moves, I like to show people this guy when talking about male pole dancers because he does tricks that require serious strength and it looks like break dancing with a pole. He also does a lot of tricks in pants! http://www.youtube.com/user/ayoungwolf?feature=watch

Thanks for the compliment! Volchonok and Hamish McCann are two guys who inspired me to give pole dancing a go, both of them are very talented individuals. I'm a long way off from trying things like Volchonok's Full Moon move though. One day…

Welcome aboard! Great spin in that vid, I hope we get to see more. 🙂

Thanks ladies, I’ll post more vids when I am confident with new moves.

As much as it feels wierd and as much as you may not be satisfied by your work, recording yourself and watching it really helps you advance. You can see what you are doing (or not doing), and it gives you a place to start working from. You don't have to post them if you don't want, but watching yourself really helps.

A while back, someone here posted about a male poler named remi martin. Search this name on youtube and you will find his male pole performances. Really great stuff : )

Thought I'd add another short video to show me practicing Chopper. I need to work on my core strength so I can come out of it more slowly…
-
Great chopper! 🙂 You look like your strong enough for a lot more. Keep practicing and posting.

Thanks! I will do, am working on shoulder mount (which hurts, I have the utmost respect for anyone who can do that without cursing) and iguana mount.
-
My partner started a few weeks ago and we don't have mixed classes either. I have been showing him a few things like shoulder mount, iguana mount and a few spins, I don't know what else to show him that are "manly". He has a strong core so can do these moves easy but is also to scared to do handspring yet. Let us know what other moves you come up with…….
-
I keep trying to get my hubby to do it too! Good for you and enjoy!
-
I've started attempting handsprings, but it's just not clicking yet. I'm either not going low enough, or not keeping myself close to the pole, and it's mainly through fear of slamming my face into the ground!
I'm having loads of fun with it though, that's the main thing.

@Frowning, lol, that is b/c the handspring is an advanced move. I tried it every day for a month or two and then I was able to get up into a ball. Once you get that point, try holding it and you can extend your legs into a pencil or v. But this is a move you may not master so quickly. It isn't like a spin or even a climb. It takes practice and patience. Good luck!
-
Oh yes, I’m under no illusion that it’s an advanced move, but I want to put in a good few attempts each session as I gain both strength and confidence in the other moves i’m learning. It may take me months of practice, but I’ll get there 🙂
-
I practiced it 5-10x a day for atleast 5 days to get it in the time I did. I also needed to bring my lower hand even lower b/c I have longer arms and legs. You may need to do the same. Keep trying!
-
Thanks, and good idea! I’ll post a bud when I finally nail it, sometime in the summer I expect 😉
-
Better yet, post a vid of your attempts now. You may get some tips that will help you get it before summer. 😉

No laughing I promise! You can have a look at my half-handspring vid if you like…some of those are funny!
