Mid-life crisis am I too old to start this?
Posted by Ginger Kitty on March 12, 2010 at 6:04 pmI’m 43. I’ve taken a couple of classes at a local studio and really like it. I’m physically active and in pretty good shape. But would like to increase my core strength and my flexibility. I think I can handle the poling but I’m feeling a little crazy that I want to start this at my age. Maybe I’m having a mid-life crisis?
Any one else start poling in their 40’s?

Now I am just early thirtys but I had to say. HELL NO YOU AREN’T to old!!!!!!!!!!!! If you can do it, DO IT! Didn’t you see on the news the pole studio that had the cute little 74 year old woman doing hand stands and everything right there with the girls? She rocks!!!. This sport is for EVERYONE who can physically do it. I will be poling as long as my body lets me and then some! Have fun!!!!!!! Oh yeah. There are LOTS of other 40 something women on here by the way.

I am one of those over 40 women on here! I turned 41 in January and have been doing this for over 2 years. I have more strength and a better body today than I did in my early 30’s. GO FOR IT!!!

YOU ARE NOT TOO OLD TO START THIS! I was 40, too, when I took my first pole class!
Admittedly there were a lot of things that the younger girls could do naturally that I struggled with (still struggle with!), but there are a lot of things that came easily to me as well. I certainly don’t have the endurance that younger women have, but really that’s due to my super-sucky cardio conditioning. I have found all polers inspiring–young, old, men and women alike. Go for it! -
Hi there! I’m 41 also and I say go for it!! My physical and mental health have improved so much! Poling is an awesome form of exercise for any age! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

So what if it is a mid-life crisis?! I think if you’ve lived this long, you’re damn well ENTITLED to one, lol!! I’ve been poling for 2.5 years and I’m 48 and I’m LOVING it!!! Honest to god, I can do things on the pole now that I could never have done in my twenties!!
Repeat after me: "I am NOT too old to start this!" https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

haha… https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif it was…but then I got smart and decided I could get a vacation home…put more money into my 401k AND buy a Mustang convertible and still spend less than the Porsche…seriously… lol

age is a number baby! I’m 31 now and have no plans to stop! My local instructor is turning 50 this year and is amazing on the pole. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif

I wouldn’t call it a midlife crisis. Call it a rebirth:) I am now 43 and I have been poling for 8 months and I exercise 5 days a week. I feel really good and It has helped me with my strength and my core. I do extra core exercises but poling has helped a lot. I love it and have two poles. Enjoy it! Enjoy the thrill of learning new moves. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif

My husband said "Yes, it might be a mid-life crisis…but who cares?!"
I tend to agree with him. Honestly, if it makes you feel good, if you like doing it and you are physically healthy (Y’know, no hip problems…and even then!) then I’d say…do what you want to! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif
I’m young (24), have a husband, go to school…and I do what I want. I never like seeing or hearing people go "I’m stuck because this is safe and I don’t want to try new things! It’s such a risk!" https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif Life is about risk, about pushing the envelope, about being someone who changes through life and says "I like who I am now," regardless of what you used to be!
The only way to change a social stigma (like "I’m too old for this") is by changing it within yourself, first! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_sunny.gif
Go for it, girl! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cat.gif -
Hi, I’m 45 and am a beginner. Yes, I feel the same about the age thing and then I think…"well I don’t care". If I want to do it then I will. I must be having a mid life crisis too (and loving it). I watch cougar town on tv and laugh. I have a slightly younger partner (and he’s hot). I have a red horse carriage and a team of horses (which I had to learn at 41) and I drive them down the main street and wave at people and . So what? Its fun. I am seriously new and bad at pole dancing but I like it. I will get better – look at all you girls and your progress! At my age, I guess I am seasoned at having fun and gaining empowerment. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif I say "GO FOR IT". PS My grandma danced on stage in amateur theatre until she was nearly eighty! She loved it.

MsWild…I’m horribly jealous. I want horses. Seriously. That’s just the most awesome thing I’ve ever heard, and you’ve just given me a new life goal.
But, seriously, I think that women (and men!) of all life stages and all walks can do this if they want to, and it would create a very diverse and fun community full of different perspectives, understandings, and ways of doing things. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif -
I’m 49…just a few months until 50! I’ll be half a century old! 43 years old, you say? LOL, that’s robbing the cradle! Get busy on that pole, young lady!

I am 47 and in better shape now than when I was younger. I have gained flexibility, strength, confidence, enhanced mood. I am glad I started poling. Its been a year now and dont see myself stopping anytime soon.

keep going for it! exercise is normally always healthy (unless already known/other circumstances) anytime i feel like my pole is a waste of time for my body I think about my father who is in great shape and goes to the gym every day and is 65 https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

I’m 44 just started a few months ago. I am not flexible but working on it. I hope by next year at this time I will be in the best shape of my life. I used to go to the gym every other day and lift weights and cardio. I still go to the gym not as often because I am getting my strength training from the pole. The pole is much more fun.
Yes, at first I felt like being the odd one and wish I had found this sport when I was younger. Thinking my body could handle the moves better. Maybe so, but I am conditioning it and it just might take a little longer with the help of some advil.
DH loves seeing me on it even if I am a beginner.

Well if you’re too old there’s no chance for me. I started poling about a month ago and now I’ve just ordered a pole for the house because I love it so much. I’m 56 and have arthritis in my hands but I’m not going to let that stop me…..I wish I’d done this years ago! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif YOU’RE GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif …..I know, Age is not the date of birth!!!
best regards -
I started in my late 30s, and one big advantage I’ve noticed over a lot of the younger girls at the studio is that I know my own body better, and I am more fearless because of that body awareness. I trust my body and my physical strength because I have tested it in other ways over many (many, yikes) years!! There are some moves that seem easier for them, but there are a lot of moves they struggle with or don’t want to try at all because they haven’t the body trust that I do. Not all of the younger girls fit into that mold, obviously, but it is something I have noticed.
I say go you, and just be the best, most confident poler you can be! It’ll help you gain strength and flexibility…and it’s way more fun than a lot of forms of exercise, right?

Thank you to everyone who replied. I feel much better now that I know I’m not alone in giving poling a try at my age. I’ll be getting a pole for the house soon. I’m so excited. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif Everyone here seems so nice. Can’t wait to get to know everyone better.
