It's called a dba or assumed name (depending on your local laws) and you apply for it through your secretary of state website.
If your stage name is not registered with the SOS you cannot use it to sign contracts or accept payments…though most banks will generally deposit them for you.
Understand that a dba/assumed name is still searchable and does not protect your identity. That is the whole reason behind it – that someone cannot just change their name and not be connected to who they really are and their past, etc.

I have only heard of registered names in Burlesque. Here is some info from small business if you plan to be paid or set up accounts in that name: http://www.sba.gov/content/register-your-fictitious-or-doing-business-dba-name

it isn't necessary to register a stage name is it? Iw ouldn't think it would be necessary unless, like mary elys said, wanting people to sign checks over to them with a different name. To me, stage names are more for keeping the creepers away.

I want it to help protect my privacy. I’m not ashamed to be a poler, it’s one of the best things in my life! I just need too fly under the radar of people in my past who aren’t supposed to contact me.

A dba will not do that. The only thing that would possibly do that is a total legal name change.

I am also a burlesque dancer and there is a stage name forum. When you start performing, and have done research on the name, you can register it. It's nothing official, but most performers use it as a guideline.

ChemGoddess-I have been seriously considering a legal name change for quite some time now. I might do that in the future. As for the stage name, no one is using it.
