Growing out my hair
Posted by minicoopergrl on August 16, 2012 at 9:29 amI havent had long hair since the 6th grade so I am attempting to grow it back out. If your thinking 'but some of her videos she has long hair' I wear extensions during performances. Its starting to inch over my shoulders but im getting to that point where I just want chop it all off!!
Any tips and tricks that can help with the growth?

use sulfate free shampoo, the cheapest is from loreal, massage your scalp often and cut the ends every 3 months 🙂 im a youtube hair tutorial freak, im following all these tricks and seeing a huge difference. you can also use castor oil and try not to use heat, i wash my hair before going to bed, i.braid it and the next morning its all set 🙂

I can relate. I want to grow my bangs out and it is killing me.
When I was going from short to long it really helped to find a few hair styles in between that worked for me. I am lucky though as my hair grows fairly quickly. I cannot tell you how good of friends I was with pony tail holders and clips.

When I grew out my hair, I came to a few points where I wanted to just cut it too. (when it hit the shoulders and again when it had to grow past my chest aeria.) but instead of doing that and regreating it, I colored my hair. It helped and made me feel like my hair was brand new. I think its because it takes so long and you just want that change now as when you go into a hair salon. 1 hour and you got a new haircut. Color it instead! 😉

i rarely wash my hair (kinda gross, i know. i use shampoo maybe once a month!! ) i use my fingers to comb thru it. sleeping in braids keeps my pillow from matting my hair. sometimes i just run water thru my hair, sometimes i run conditioner thru with no shampoo. rarely blowdry and rarely iron. i like those spray in dry shampoos. i use hair clips – the ones that are like an alligator mouth ? Not sure the correct term. they have teeth and open and close like jaws. i dont use rubberbands offen bc that pulls out and breaks hair

I hardly use "normal" shampoo either. 🙂 I didn't know if it really helped with growing faster, but I guess I've been told that I don't get split ends (thus not needing trims as much?) and maybe using less harsh shampoos help with that. 🙂
Sometimes I use a shampoo bar from J.R. Liggetts (just made of lye and oils), sometimes I use a baking soda then vinegar rinse, sometimes I do use shampoo, and sometimes it's just water. A lot of times I just wash my bangs out with soap in a sink real fast in the morning too…
Oh and for growing bangs out, I suggest Stayput bobby pins. You'd think that bobby pins are all the same. Untrue.

I only wash my hair like once a week – I try to only shower every other day when I'm not doing a ton of poling (when I am I HAVE to shower daily. AndI know this sounds gross but my skin is a disaster if I shower daily so I do every other day but clean all the important parts daily ofcourse.) I get my hair wet when I shower and massage my scalp but don't use shampoo or conditioner and wear my hair up all the time. I have VERY oily hair so it's a bit inconvenient because I want to wash my hair because it looks so gross but the more you wash it the more oily it becomes.
I also use dry shampoo or baby powder and that stuff is really good just hard to work with if you have black hair and I do – you have to make sure you get it all absorbed up. I also try not to brush my hair much – I have fine straight hair so it doesn't tangle much and I'm lucky. and finally I leave it up in a clip. I've been getting more compliments on my hair since I started doing this than ever and much less breakage because I'm not fussing with it.

Yeah, see there is no way in the world ANY bobby pin will hold back my hair. Most normal clips won't even stay in. I have a lot of thick straight hair.
I am another don't shampoo every day girl. I usually condition only one day and I do that because there is no way I am getting a comb through my hair when it is wet without conditioner.
-
Haha okay. Well, for those who might consider using bobby pins but don't understand how to get them to stay, get the Stayput ones. =P They have grooves on the inside and actually do something.

I am currently using Wen on my hair and it being colored red, I do my best to not shampoo as often to maintain the red. Im a die hard fan of dry shampoo – I have probably tried every brand under the sun. My top two faves are Not Your Mothers and Oscar Blondi. I prefer the powder since it absorbs the oily in my hair (my hair is oily and thick). I havent gotten it cut since March, I think im due for a trim!
I also try to put in my exenstions from time to time so I see what its going to look like when its grown out and remind myself if I keep letting grow it will happen. I put them in yesterday for a wedding and I loved the way my hair looked even when I threw it back in a ponytail as well.

burts bees natural shampoo and massage ur scalp with cold pressed castor oil once a week and leave on at night to sleep!
-
i wud think so! its like 96% natural so its very gentle

i dont have color on my hair so i dont know for sure, maybe google it?!

Nutrition and hydration are very imporant and I have found that helps my hair. For managing hair when it is in that inbetween stage I would use tons of pony tails and claw clips to keep it out of my face.
Also you can have different bang styles to add variety while the rest is growing. There are the betty page style bang, side swept bang, pompadour bang etc etc etc. Sometimes that will allow you to have something you can change and play with style wise while waiting for the rest to grow into it's final style.

This is so funny! I only wash my hair every 5 days. I shower daily though due to my job. I have to get the little hairs off of my skin after work. I use dry shampoos for in between days. I can only wear it down for 2 or 3 of the days. The rest of the days, it has to be up usually. When I do wash it, I am using a special medicated shampoo due to my severe shedding. I am so glad I am not the only one that does not wash my hair often.
-
I wash my hair every 4-5 days, you are not alone! I put it up when I shower/bathe so I can get my body clean but not get my hair wet. It works great for me. 🙂

Try not to wear the extensions too often… they can damage/break/weaken your hair. Prenatal vitamins also worked for me.

Hey ladies! Little late to the party, but I wanted to join in because I'm growing my hair out, too!
It's so hard, because my hair curls so much, it looks like it's not moving. Soo frustrating!
I trim it when I can, every 3-6 months or so, and I do notice a difference when I do that. So, that's nice.I've heard of some vitamins that you can take to make your hair grow faster. Biotin being one of them (I can't remember the other).
There's a lot on the internet about scalp massage, so I might try that.
I don't wash my hair more than once a month. Like, ever. I'll get it wet and run my fingers through it, but it hasn't seen a brush in more than a year, and the same goes for shampoo. Because my hair is curly, it dries out very easily, and is much happier when I can let it do it's thing for a while.
Leave-in conditioner is my friend, though. I love the stuff! I get some from Lush when I can, because it's natural, and it works wonders!

took 4 years but my hair almost touches my butt. I had extentions for a few months and they ruined my hair from the ears down . I had the clamp in ones though not the swen in or the clip ins. I wouldnt suggest extensions unless they are the clip in ones you can make. Give it time, get it trimmed every 4 weeks, and dont use products with alcohol. good luck!

🙂 Well I can certainly say that I definitely know some tips.
General tips-
-Drink lots of water + Get lots of sleep.
-A healthy lifestyle will mean healthier hair for you. Excessive stress, smoking, not exercising and not eating nutritiously are not healthy for your hair.
-Eat at least 1 Avocado a week. (this will also help with mood swings)
-Take Biotin (best is 5,000mcg), Take Vitamin B , Take Kelp pills, Take Folic Acid pills
-Drink a glass of milk before bed every night.
-Hang your head upside-down/over the edge of your bed for 5-10min every night to help with circulation.
-Head rubs (no nails!) regularly (daily) for at least 5 minutes each.
-Avoid sleeping with tightly braided hair or hair in a tight ponytail. The stress can cause breakage and/or hair loss
-wrap hair in a silk kerchief or use a silk pillow case
-DO NOT brush hair when wet. (if you have to use a wide toothed comb and a spray in conditioner.)
-Do a little heat/styling as possible
-Do not dye your hair (or if you do- don't put it anywhere but roots.)
-Don't rub your hair dry with a towel, instead blot the water out of your hair, when you rub, it'll cause your hair to tangle.
-A healthy lifestyle will mean healthier hair for you. Excessive stress, smoking, not exercising and not eating nutritiously are not healthy for your hair.-Trim regularly! Although it feels like a step backwords there is more harm done if split ends are not taken care of before they go further up the hair strand. Split ends do not make for healthy hair!
Eat lots of-
-Protein (lean meat, fish, eggs, nuts, beans, soy)
-Zinc (peanut butter, lean meat, oysters, crab, poultry, pumpkin seeds, chickpeas)
-B vitamin rich foods (seafood, spinach, oatmeal, wholegrains, soybean, lean dairy, lean meats, bananas, lentils, potatoes, peas, beets, broccoli, artichoke)
-Vitamin C (citrus fruits, pineapples, strawberries, quava, broccoli, kale, peppers)
-Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (I'm neutral on this one even though I've tried it myself. I noticed more of a skin improvement than a hair improvement but since I'm trying to give as many tips as I've heard I'll include it.)
-Using Coconut oil to cook with is good to- or you can mix it into a protein shake (I didn't like that though. XP)
-Other good things to include in your diet (and can be made into hair treatments.) are Banana, coconut, lemon, curry leaves, hibiscus, goose berries, fresh ginger, aloe, honey, red wine, and dark cocoa
– L-Glutamine is another suppliment that helps. When you wash your hair + Hair Treatments-
-Rotate your shampoos and conditioners
-Only use cold or "warm" water on your hair. (not hot)
-Regularly condition it with a mixture of mayonnaise, Vitamin E, and Olive Oil
-Regularly condition with Coconut oil.
-Mane and Tail shampoo + conditioner is said to help strengthen hair during the growing process.
-Equate Dandruff shampoo is said to help.
How to wash your Hair-You should wash your hair as often as you feel necessary to keep it clean but a general rule for oily hair is that you should wash it every day or every other day and for dry hair only wash it 2-3 times a week.
Shampoo from the neck up; however, never use your fingertips- always the palms. Massage little circle, but gently, not too much pressure. Try to get only roots, but if you get more hair it doesn't matter. massage the little circles from the lowest part into the top of your head, but try not to stall in an area. When you think you've gotten everywhere rinse, then condition only the tips.
Ok well…. I think that's most of what I know. Oh also- Patience. It will take time- it's not an overnight change but it WILL help.

I second Krysten, prenatal vitamins help a lot–you will also notice your nails are stronger, too. Don't shell out for the uber expensive brands, a generic will work well.

My hair is real, and it just naturally grows long, so I may not seem like the best candidate to give advice, BUT:
My nails are a horrible disaster, and when Duane Reade used to carry a vitamin called Perfectil I took it and it worked wonders. It was a hair-skin-nails combo that i was taking for my nails, but I DID notice it made my hair grow faster. You can order it online, I'm just too lazy. Someday I will again and I will have rockin' nails. Meanwhile, you can take it and it will probs help your hair. If not, you will also have rockin' nails.
