    Hello,

I am taking classes at a studio for 4 weeks. We do these strengthening exericse where you wrap your hands around the pole and engage your biceps until you have the ability to pull yourself up. We had a different instructor last week who wanted us to jump up. I found out I can hold my own body weight but my hands just slide down the pole. My hand slid fast down the pole when I do try spins, and I have to wipe my hands off on my clothes all the time due to claminess every couple of spins. Last night we each got our own pole and after about 15 min I was almost stuck to the pole during spins and getting red hands from the excess friction. Does anyone know what might be going on and a way to fix it?

My ideas were poor grip strength, hand claminess, hands too warm. Thanks for any help

P.S. I do tend to have warm hand, because I just did some biofeedback by consciouslly warming my hand for stress reduction ( was really cool to raise skin temperature by 2 degrees)

Grip is the #1 problem for beginners…you either don't have enough or you have too much.  4 weeks is probably what, 4 classes?  The only thing I can say is that it does get better.

Seeing as you said you went from too little to too much I would say it is definitely just getting used to holding your own weight.  Room temp, humidity, types of lotions you use, even fabric softener on your clothing can all have an effect on your ability to hold on.  My one friend will not even wear deodorant when she performs because of the moisturizers in deodorant that will mess up armpit holds or wipe off on the pole.

Try Tite Grip!!! It’s an antiperspirant grip aid that will help severely decrease the clamminess and slipping. Simply apply 30 min before warming up, for optimal effect. 🙂

And a trick for redness is Pepcid AC or tylenol.

Our training gloves also work very well helping you build up your upper body strength.

Use the non-tack for spinning and the tack for holding particular movements and help with strenghting both hand grip and other muscles associated with climbing.
