Going from a 50mm to a 45mm pole. Does this impede progress?
Posted by DarlingNikki on May 6, 2012 at 6:34 pmHello, I'm getting ready to buy a pole soon and I have been practicing at a pole dance studio that only use 50mm poles. I like using the 50mm but I feel I don't really know the best fit for me because I haven't used a 45mm yet. I plan on competing and was told that they only use 45mm. So i'm on the fence about which one to buy. Since I'm making this big purchase I just wanted to get some advice.

What does your studio say since they know you. I'm on my 4th pole in 4 years, however, bought two within a few months! Years ago I started with a 50mm lil mynx ss, few years bought a 50mm xpert titan gold; Then last year or so bought a 45mm chrome which was a struggle for me. So ended up with a 45mm xpert titan gold. If you plan on competing, others might suggest a 45mm. You can still learn on a 50mm and then practice and perfect on your 45 if that's what you get.
I'm sure others who are stronger polers will give you advice.

Competitions vary (from what I've heard), so it is good to have experience on a number of dimeters and finishes. I started out on a 50mm, then got fed up cuz I have small hands, so I purchased a 45. I like the 45mm better. It is easier to grip with your hands, and makes knee pit grips much easier as well. The only challenge is thigh based grips (at first), but I'm sure you will be like me and quickly adjust. You just need to squeeze a bit more, which IMO is much better anyways cuz you get stronger faster. I like 45's and 38's overall, and dislike 50's, but will use one if I have to. If you are getting a home pole, I personally think you should get a 45, so you can do that at home, and use the 50s at the studio (so you can practice on both.)

Switching from one size to another, will not hurt your progress, it can only improve your technique as a poler!
Many of the larger competition will have 45mm poles, they may also have one 45 and one 50. The smaller competitions held in studios will of course vary depending on the studio. Many older studios have 50mm poles. The 45mm is becoming the "standard" pole. If you have access to 50's and 45's that's great!!

I went from a 50mm to a 45mm and love it!! I recommend going with the TG finish, its only $30 more and its grippier.

Thank you ladies for all the great advice. I think I'll get the 45mm 🙂

Just fyi, I’ve decided to get both. 50mm now and 45mm in a couple months.

I started out learning on a 50mm, then switched to 45mm after seven months, and I've also played around with a 40mm. I really like the versitality of practicing on different sizes, but the 45mm is my favorite 🙂

DarlingNikki, good choice! I started with the 50mm chrome Xpole Sport, but I wanted to upgrade to Xpert. My studio brought in a 45mm, and when I tried it, I loved how well I could grip it! I bought a 45mm Xpert recently and I have both up in my house. Even though it is my favorite of the two, I find that when I need to work on any thigh holds, I much prefer learning on the 50. The versatility is nothing but great for us pole dancers! 🙂 You will be glad you have both. Just be sure you use both so your body can perform fairly consistently either way!

I too originally had a 50mm chrome. Then switched to a 45mm titanium. Greatly improved my ability to learn advanced holds since my hands always felt like they were loosing grip on the 50mm. I have no issues doing the same moves on the 50mm now but still prefer the 45.
