So I’m entering my uni’s pole competition in the solo beginner category as well as doubles. It’s not for another 5 weeks or so yet but I’m really really nervous about my hands slipping on spins, especially in my solo performance when I’m spending less time dancing and more in slow spins. In class I avoid using grip aids because I’ve been trying to improve my grip strength naturally, and it has helped somewhat, but I still wipe down my hands/the pole after every few moves. I often try moves and unexpectedly slip straight to the floor as I push off for a spin, and I am SO scared of this happening in my performance and looking stupid! I’m just not sure my hands are capable of lasting a whole routine without slipping. Does anyone have any helpful tips to avoid this? I’m considering using a grip aid but I’m worried that after a while my sweat might mingle with the weird powdery texture and make me slip even more! (Sorry if gross/TMI :P)

my hands sweat alot – but its usually only a problem during practices and pole classes. when it is performance time, i generally do not do much poling before my routine- just simple warm ups and strectches, so my hands dont over heat and get sweaty. i apply tite grip and dry hands almost once every hour prior to showtime.
will you have a dress rehearsal? because that might be a good opportunity to see how your hands react when only poling for just your routine and also with anti perspirants

Thanks for the tips and reassurance – I suppose now I think about it, if we go on a night out and there is a pole, I am able to sustain a mini-performance on there fairly easily compared to in a class, so perhaps you’re right on the class v performance thing. I feel better already! 😀 I’m not sure if we have a dress rehearsal or not yet, I’ll have to look into it.
