So, I'm studying to be an instructor one day. I can design a warmup for seasoned girls who already know grapevines, body waves, chest circles, hip circles, and floor moves. The problem I am hitting is: what kind of a warmup would be fun and appropriate for total newbies who have no idea how to do those moves??

Do you have any of the S Factor dvds?  I used some of the movement from that when I was teaching, then went into stand ups, walks, hip circles, etc.

You can do arm circles, windmills, leg kicks, plie squats, neck circles, hip circles, any activity that gets their joints moving and heart pumping a little. Stick with things they can do instantly by watching you. Someone who has never done an arm circle in their life can do it right away after seeing one.

(And when I say windmill, I mean the exercise. I think there’s a pole move called that also, and that’s not what I’m referring to)

Ok thanks. That's kinda what I thought I'd have to go towards, but I wasn't sure.

I think Veena's basic warmup is pretty easy to follow, even for a total beginner. I think many people have done lunges, squats, etc. in gym class so the moves are familiar, or at least those moves are easy to explain in real world terms and adapt around personal limitations. You might try using her warmup as a jumping off point and add some additional moves as you see fit.

I personally like doing some basic yoga as a warmup (cat/cow, sun salutations) and some beginner pilates moves, as that warms my body up nicely and gets my core active. But that requires some knowledge of yoga or pilates. Depending on where you teach, your students might already know some aspects of those disciplines!
