Can you put up a Peek A Boo pole on a popcorn ceiling?
Posted by beautifulone01 on November 28, 2012 at 4:56 pmI am having the hardest time finding a beam, joist, stud to screw my pole into place. i have sooooooooo many little holes in my ceiling. I have done the 16"-24" measuring and still cannot find a beam. Is there another way to search for it???

Do you have a stud finder? Cause the stud finder will help you find the beam.

Sometimes, even with a studfinder, finding a joist/beam on a popcorn ceiling can be difficult because the studfinder cannot run along the ceiling texture evenly. What I have found that helps is to get a large piece of cardboard, and have someone hold that flat up against the ceiling, and then run the stud finder over the cardboard. Because it's flat, you can maintain contact with the studfinder, keeping it from freaking out and giving bum readings (also keeps texture out of your eyes). Usually when I do this, I also make sure to calibrate it with cardboard on the wall. Since there is typically little to no texture on the wall, its easy to find studs, even by tapping and then calibrating is easily and quickly done.

You should be able to look across your ceiling and tell where there are seams. Those seams are where there should be joists. ALSO, get a small thin and long nail (at least 1.2-2") to use as a trial nail to see if you hit a joist before drilling.
You can also knock on the ceiling with a hammer (lightly) and tell by the tone of the thud if you are at a hollow or solid spot.
Lastly, please be careful with a peek a boo pole. They are not designed to be used for serious pole work.

corbyOconnor! What a lifesaver, I've been trying to run my stud finder along the popcorn ceiling and getting all kinds of yuck in my eyes, on the floor, in my hair, everywhere! Cardboard, so simple, what a fix. Thanks for the tip about the calibrating as well.

oh dear not a peek A boo pole :/
i made that mistake 2 years ago it fell multiple times from the ceiling injuring me
so i screwed it into the ceiling and even after that to my horror my pole snapped in half :/
even tho x poles are more expensive they are much safer i learnt the hard way

A friend of mine helped me locate studs by using rare earth magnets. They work just as good as a stud finder.

Really, you should not put a peekaboo pole anywhere… They are not meant to hold the load of the kinds of tricks you will want to do. Christmas is coming so just ask for money from everyone and buy a reputable pole–I’m not joking. There are so many tricks that I do that it is a wonder to me how I have not ripped my xpole down. (; it is a security that I feel is worth every penny.

I don't know anything about Peek A Boo poles but it sounds like stick with lil mynx or x-pole in terms of safety. However, to answer your initial question about stud finding…I'm not sure what type of place you live but some newer condos/apartments have metal studs. When I tried to put up my pole the stud finder was lighting up like the 4th of July.
Because it's actually a metal roof truss and it runs all the way along the ceiling either one way or the other. So that might be a problem. You have to use a special toggle bolt up through the metal and it latches on top, unlike a screw you just screw into the wood beam.

EnaSee, no problem! I feel like I must have read that somewhere on this forum, but its been so long ago that I dont even know where to find it again.
Also, definitely spring for a different pole if you are planning on throwing spins or inverting. Depending on what you want, X-Pole, Lil Mynx, or Platinum Stages can be solid home poles, and there are some other brands that are permanently mounted that are definitely good as well. Just search the forum for info, there is a lot of information!

I agree with Corby, it's a painful and expensive realization, but if you really want to get in the nitty gritty of pole dancing then you need a diffrent pole.

Yes I have a stud finder and it doesnt work on a popcorn ceiling. I have tried to ue a cardboard to help me slide it but it still does not worK!!! i just put it back in the bag and said F it.

I got a pice off wood about a meter and half long and put it the oposit way to what the Joyce run and got sum one to Just hold it and put the pole up under that. That way I no for sure thst it will be going over at least two joyce. So the presure is then spread over a bigger area. A builder/ plaster and joiner all told me to try and spread the pressure. They said that way your not putting pressure on one Joyce so less chance of damaging ceiling or nething xxx

I have a peek a boo palace pole *pink* and a popcorn ceiling!!! Yes I must have admit I have crashed and burned lmao even in the friday chat! You will definitely have to bolt it in place to do more advanced transtions.. Unbolted you can get a way with learning some hardcore holds but I will advise No spins X_X. I pole practice in a carpeted room which made a proper grip dificult to obtain at first, but the trick is to put a piece of cardboard underneeth the pole and it will just spin till its good and tight! This method you will allow you the a steady grip between floor and ceiling where you can practice batwing, butterfly, knee holds, and more. Though some might feel its risky to do it like this you consciously teach yourself how to lift yourself without exerting so much force. if you have trouble finding a stud just rub a little popcorn off… if the pole hasn't already done it for you <3

I also have used a hard back book inbetween the the pole and ceiling… crazy but it worked for a while the book absorbed alot of the pressure! Have fun you will obtain cat like reflexs after landing on your back a couple times… Me and my friend both use this brand.. If remember correctly though Studs are set either 16 or 24 inches apart on popcorn ceilings. so just go from the edge of the wall then 16 to 24 inches out and woolah you have your stud..
