One method I’ve heard for determining sizing is to sit against a wall and measure from the floor to the top of your head and add an inch or two. I’m 5’5″ and I take a 36.

Just contacted Brett at fight or flight…can’t wait to hear back! I think I will actually need like a 32 (crazy!). I did the measuring from butt to head while seated and it was at 30. I never realized how short I actually am lol!

I totally wish I’d known that lyras come in no tab. That would have been better for me!!!

Just putting in a recommendation to whoever else is planning to buy a lyra… I got mine from Spitfire Aerial. Christina is such a dear and very easy and friendly to deal with! My friends got 2 trapezes from her too, and a girl from my studio bought a lyra from her as well. We are all very happy, and all the aerial equipment was beautifully crafted, excellent quality with reasonable prices.

Oh and I am 5'2" and use a 35" double tab lyra. I like that size, for me it's perfect. 🙂

Gummypia- I did check them out too. I saw that the hoops are made of thick, not hollow steel and I was wondering how heavy it is to transport. I will need be able to take it down after every session bc it is going in the living room. I know there is a debate on aluminum vs steel. Those that own a hoop – what do y’all think of that? I know I will get hardware made of steel but the actual hoop? Some places use aluminum and others use steel. What are y’all’s experience with the material you have?

@Storypole Mine is hollow https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Her description says "thick wall steel tubing" and if you click the link that says "specifications" she describes it a bit more there as "heavy wall one inch diamater steel tubing". Though I think for those who like solid steel you could write her about that too. I've carried both a solid steel lyra and my hollow steel one of similar diameters, there is a big difference. My hollow one is a lot more manageable. I live in an apartment and I take it up and down to hang, to my parking garage and my living room. It's not bad. I chose hollow steel because I read somewhere that the aluminum lyras don't spin as long because they are so light, and I want to spin. The solid steel ones can spin longer due to their weight but I chose hollow steel as a happy medium because like you, I need to take it up and down. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

Thanks for the info! I think I definitely want hollow steel then :-). Now to try to find someone to help me decide how to mount the thing! There seems to be so many different ways based on the support beam that exists.

Here is the lyra I had made (with a coat of paint). You can clearly see where the kink is from the tube roller. You can't see it so much now that it's taped. When I have a double tab made, I'll request he cut that off. I'll also make my rigging tab holes a little bigger and center them more on the tab. But you get the idea.

And taped and hung from my rig:

and here is a pic of the Lyra's on her Facebook page

They do the Lyra's in any color you want and very inexpensive. I personally have not purchased one from them yet. But if any one else has I would love to hear the feedback about how it worked out for you.

Good news – I talked to my lyra instructor and she referred me to a guy she used here in town for the one she has in her house. And it’s for the best price! And she cleared up my rigging questions too! I’m headed to Vegas tomorrow so I’ll be calling him first thing when I get back! So now I have a new question. I am going to have to tape this myself (I want to tape it). What kind of tape should I use? I’ve heard varying opinions on this. I think I can find cute colors of athletic tape at Walmart, but any suggestions?!?!

I am not sure, is hockey tape acceptable? If so, this page is AWESOME for some decorations and colors: http://www.tapebrothers.com/Hockey-Tapes-s/324.htm  I buy almost all my tape for my regular hoops from them because they have cool patterns. The question I had: Where did you get that outdoor tripod??? So awesome!

Just want to rant a little.  I ordered my lyra on Feb. 01 and STILL have not got it.  I am soooooo glad I paid with paypal so I will get my money back!  My husband and I contacted the seller (The Circus Spotlight) many many times with no response.  They have over $300.00 of our money!  I an now just waiting for the money to get back to our account so I can place an order with some other company.  So frustrated!!!!!

I very much recommend going with aerialempowerment. The hoops were on their way to her when I ordered mine, and she kept me updated the entire time. She was wonderful to work with.

Thanks! I am going to go with fight or flight! He gave me a great price and I need a 40″! I just really wanted to warn people about “The Circus Spotlight”. Funny thing is the website is now gone. Crazy because they still have my money. I will always use PayPal for ordering high priced items!!! So thankful for that!!!

Question about installing the anchor point. I have a regular ceiling (no exposed beams). I have done extensive research and can’t find a straight forward answer. It seems that I will need some sort of eye bolt through the joist. The problem I am having is that my ceiling is also on the first floor of my house – so I’m not sure that I can use a nut and washer on the top of the joist bc of the second floor. There are several different types of eye bolts. I know I have to go with welded steel. But what size? And according to my research, if something is hanging straight vertical with no motion, it’s okay to use a regular eye bolt with no nut. But a hoop can have angular motion, in which case it seems to need more support than a regular eye bolt that just screws into the joist. Any advice?

I just got an aerial hoop for my birthday!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 Greatest boyfriend ever! I would definitely contact a pro about rigging if you do not have a sturdy rigging point.  I just rigged mine to one of the support beams in the studio (big and steel, very sturdy!)  I got my hoop from aerialfabric.com and it was $200.  I love it!  I had them tape it for me and they did a very good job.  You are supposed to tape a hoop from the top to middle of the bottom on each side so when you slide your hands down it it doesn't unravel or roll.

I got my hoop and taped it purple with a black spiral :-). So pretty! Just got all of the rigging and hardware from aerial essentials. They were extremely helpful! With my problem of rigging the anchor point into my ceiling – which is actually a floor joist bc of the second story above – I went with a steel plate that gets drilled into the side of my 2×12 beam. I just have to buy the steel screws and nuts that will go through it!! I’m guessing I won’t be able to open up the ceiling and install the plate until after Easter but I am super excited!!!

tape your hoop from the bottom middle to the top so it doesn't roll

from 7 o'clock counterclocwise to top (even 11 so there is overlap)

    then from 5 o'clock clockwise to 1

Determining the size of hoop you need depends on what you plan to do, and on your measurements. For more information, I wrote a blog on this: http://aerialfabric.com/blog/?p=30

There are several hoops that are available at http://shop.aerialfabric.com/Lyra-Hoops_c5.htm

The company does good welds, and uses 11 guauge hollow steel. Very durable and well priced.

I am in the process of buying an aerial hoop and I am interested in purchasing one with no tabs so that I can rig it as a single or double and eventually I want to try rigging a tippy lyra.  Does anyone know how one might rig a hoop with no tabs?  I've seen it done in YouTube videos and it appears that it is done with aerial silk perhaps?

Also, many thanks to all that have posted in this thread so far.  Your advice and comments have been an enormous help in my research into buying a lyra!

You would want to use span sets for rigging a no tab lyra 🙂

I had a local guy make my lyra, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. I think there is this one site where she can make it for you…I know it’s one of the first sites that pop up when you search but I forgot the name 🙁
