Soooooooooo I just walked in from the amateur night contest. Looking back I’m glad I did it, it was nerve wracking but a lot of fun. I’ll start from the beginning…

I got to the club and filled out an application, the girl working the front said she wasn’t even sure if they were going to have an amateur night because no one else was there. This concerned me a bit since I had psyched myself up for it but when I called the club they said to get there at 9pm and when I got there the woman who checked me in said the contest didn’t even start until 11. I had already paid to valet my car so I figured I should stay. Two friends of mine showed up though so once they got there they kept me company and the time went by a lot faster.

When it was time to go get ready they brought us all into the bathroom and 7 other girls ended up showing up by that point so the contest was on. Out of the 8 of us, a lot of girls had danced before and I found out two of the girls that had come together had been dancing for a long time and just quit their jobs at another club the week before and one of them had danced at this club when it first opened! That kind of made me mad because I feel like amateur night should be for girls that haven’t danced before but I wasn’t the one making the rules…

I initially brought a tank top and skirt to wear but then I realized all the other girls were going out in lingerie or bikinis so I didn’t even end up wearing them. I had to sit around for quite a while waiting to go on and then they sat the eight of us at a table by the stage and one of the other dancers emceed the contest. The first girl to go was one of the dancers so that made me feel better because I did NOT want to go first. I ended up going 6th or 7th which was nice because I didn’t want to be last either.

So my turn finally comes, I get onstage, THE POLE WAS SO SLIPPERY. I tried to climb it and couldn’t even get to the top because it was pretty slick but I got most of the way up. The stage was pretty slick too and at one point one of my shoes partially came off! I was wearing those black stiletto stripper shoes and my feet were sliding around so much that my toes came out of the top of one of my shoes so in the heat of the moment instead of trying to struggle to get it back on I just took both of my shoes off. Luckily that didn’t happen until toward the end of my turn! I tried to go upside down and do a few caterpillars into an aysha but those poles were so freakin slippery I couldn’t even do one caterpillar. I think all together I did a climb, cross knee release, bow and arrow, inverted thigh hold, fireman and backhook. I didn’t want to rely too much on the pole but I think when it came time to vote I definitely had an advantage because of my pole tricks. When I got done with my turn the DJ announced that the manager radioed him to put a star by name but who knows what that means. I tried to do some floorwork and dancey stuff in there, they gave me a techno song and honestly the whole three minutes I was up there were such a blur that I don’t even remember what I did. I’m kind of glad because I’m sure I looked quite silly! I know everyone here told me to smile and look like I was having fun but I was so zoned out as soon as my turn started that I’m surprised I remembered how to even do any pole tricks! A lot of people in the audience complemented me though.

Time to vote…like I said two of the girls were working dancers so I didn’t think it was fair for them but oh well. They voted by applause and they had us stand up in order of our turns so the first girl that went was a dancer and she got a lot of applause. The next few girls got knocked out, then the other dancer went and got a lot of applause, then I went and I got enough applause for the DJ to tell me to stay on stage! So at the end it came down to me and the two dancers, all the other non dancers got "voted off." But sadly I didn’t win, one of the dancers did and I pretty much knew it would be one of them since they DO THIS FOR A LIVING https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_scratch.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_evil.gif buuuuuuuut I came in third place and I was the best of the amateurs…so I would have won if they hadn’t shown up! When I got off the stage the DJ told me how much I rocked and he didn’t compliment any of the other girls like that so I felt pretty good. They were really bitchy too. The tie breaker for them was to go around the club with two champagne buckets and see who could collect the most cash. One of the girls went up to one of my friends and said "Do you have any money????" and he said no because she was rude and she just stormed off. Oh and also they were sisters…which is a little weird in my opinion lol. But overall it was fun, I’m glad I did it. I asked them if they were hiring and they said the hiring manager wasnt in the club at the moment but she would "give me a call" so I’m pretty sure that’s a nice way of letting me down gently but hey at least I tried!

YAY! Glitter, you did AWESOME!!!! Sounds like the "sisters" were just trying to make some cash by going in as a team, didn’t matter which girl won, they’re probably splitting the earnings…lame. But YOU did great! I am sooo proud of you! I wish I could find an amateur night around here to go to, you make me a little braver https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif BRAVO!!!

Congrats on even doing the contest in the first place! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_sunny.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_thumleft.gif

Really think though if you want to work in a club, I started out in a club 2 years ago and it is really addicting! I had been to the club a few weeks earlier and witnessed some amazing pole tricks, had no idea that the world of pole existed, and called and auditioned. I got the job, but i was "too fat" for night shift, and couldn’t dance (which was true, had never really worn heels of any sort until the audition night!), so I was put on day shift. I ended up learning a lot from the girls on day shift, seeing as we were lucky to get even 3 customers in a 6 hour period any given day, and it got me to a lot of where I am today with pole tricks…BUT…even working in the clubs now I get to the point that I’m so fed up with not making any money that I don’t even care to do anything on stage except maybe a few basic spins here and there. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif

Not only that, but the strip club world can really mess with you personal life and future job employment. I’ve found it hard in the 2 years of dancing to find in-between jobs due to my massive gaps in employment.

Annnnddd, you have to pay the clubs to work there, as well as tip everyone that already gets a paycheck.

Not sure if you already knew all of this, and I may be babbling on stupidly at this point. lol. Just give it all some good thinking before getting into the club life, it’s not easy to escape when there’s somewhat easy money to be made every now and then! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_tongue.gif

Either way, awesome job on getting third (which is also first in my opinion since the other two were veteran dancers!) and I’m glad you had fun!

    xoxo,

    Stevie

Thanks everyone! Yeah I definitely feel like I was the winner even though I didn’t technically win…I’m not counting the bitchy stripping sisters!

As far as working in the club they didn’t offer me a job on the spot and they said the hiring manager would call me as she wasn’t in the club last night but they could have been saying that just to be polite. I do have a part time day job and I would keep my day job so I didn’t have gaps in my employment and my day job is also where I get my health insurance. I could definitely really use the extra money from dancing but I don’t desperately need it…I would just be able to pay off my student loans a lot quicker and move out a lot sooner. However at the same time that they money would be nice, I know having two jobs and a boyfriend would not be easy and it would definitely put a strain on our relationshiop (not to mention Morgan probably would be wondering how many lap dances I had to do to pay for nice dinners or a vacation!) I was thinking about maybe just doing it for a few months if I did end up getting called back, so I can make enough to pay off my student loans and have a little extra to use as a down payment on an apartment. I know working in a club can be addicting but I think there’s only so long where I could handle having two jobs without going completely insane.

I’m hoping for a call back but I guess we’ll see. There were postings on Craigslist for a few other clubs so I might go check those out as well.

Yay, Glitter!! Sounds like you did a great job, even with a slippery pole. Sounds like you managed to get a lot of cool tricks in. Do u think u may want to compete again? Maybe next time bring a grip aid to help counteract the slippery pole.

I think that it is pretty common that professional dancers compete in amateurs contests. I know in my area, strippers I know have competed in amateur contests at other clubs. One girl actually has her own agent that books her for different contests in the other clubs. And she is really good, so I am assuming the clubs invite her to compete.

Awesome job! You must be so proud and on cloud 9 right about now!!!

Like Jenn said – in our area and I am sure Chicago being a big city it’s the same deal – our amateur night is full of veteran dancers. I know girls who plan trips to amateur nights https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif Off the street dancers never get much of a chance. So that’s awesome and even mor eof an accommplishement to beat them!

The way I see it you came in first! Good luck if you do decide to work there.

Glitter, I wish I had your guts and that my hubby would be OK with me doing an amateur night. It’s a dream of mine simply because I think it takes a lot of guts to get up there in next to nothing and perform in front of people oogling your body.

I am so proud of you for doing what felt right for you. YOU GO GIRL! Next time those other dancers better watch out because Glitter is taking 1st prize. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

Not that it needs to be said again, but congrats glitter! I knew you’d be awesome https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Unfortunately, that’s how it usually is – the poles are slippery, the music is bad and the shoes are annoying. As for the poles, I always wipe them down with a cloth and spray bottle first – It looks silly, but at least I don’t fall down. After 2 songs they usually get slippery again, and I have a list of moves I can do without needing great grip – it’s handy to figure out which tricks still work on a slippery pole because sometimes you don’t have an option. Especially when some of the girls are stupid and wear moisturisers, it just messes the poles up for the whole night.

As for the music, I hate techno. Some clubs have dj’s and you get to choose the music – I worked in one where they had everything on a computer and each girl had her own folder. When she went on stage the dj would just pull up her folder and put on the songs she likes to dance to. In clubs like that you have to pay a dj fee though, to pay for the service. In mine, its just a computer with a heap of songs on random.. if you’re nice to the boss sometimes they’ll put music on but not always. In 4 years, I have had to dance to some shockers… included are mmbop – hanson, yellow submarine (three times now, not cool), the nutbush, the macarena, bat out of hell (it goes for like 10 minutes and we have to do 4 songs)… and the bob the builder song. You just get used to dancing to crappy music after a while.

As for the shoes, plastic tops (for grip) with ankle straps are the best on stage – i’ve seen so many shoes go flying, ankle straps are important! If I don’t have ankle straps, I get a pretty ribbon and wrap it around the top of the heel and then my ankle, so at least they don’t go flying.

Pole twista – i’m not sure how it is in the US, but here every club is different. Some clubs have a varying percentage – if you work 2 days in a week, the next week you only keep 40%. if you work 5 days, the next week you keep 90%. A lot of clubs have a door fee – you pay a certain amount to work for the night. Some clubs change it depending on the time you start – so if you don’t want to pay a door fee you just start really early. The later you rock up, the more you pay. It’s usually higher for busier clubs, and also higher on weekends. In some clubs they sell tipping money to the guys, so you have to hand it in to the club to get the money back, and you only get a percentage. In some they just trust you to hand your tips in and you keep half…

Most clubs here have a bond as well, in case you’re interested. You have to pay a certain amount when you start – usually a few hundred. If you do something wrong or have to leave in bad circumstances – like not showing up for a shift, punching a customer and having to be forcefully removed, getting too drunk to stand and being sent home or fired – they keep the bond. It kind of keeps the girls in check, they don’t misbehave because they lose their cash.

In mine, there is no door fee, but the percentage is only 55%. We keep our tips and the girls are friendly. The bond is the pay you make – they give it to you on your next shift instead of on the same day. If you make $300 one night, and just don’t show up for your shift, you lose that money. If you’re late or do something wrong, they can fine you and take that out of your pay. There’s much more to it than just giving them money, but usually if you do the right thing you don’t lose anything.

Thanks for responding everyone! Omg Neke I can’t believe you had to dance to the bob the builder song!

I did wear black stilettos with the plastic tops and the ankle strap but the stage was so slippery I think my foot twisted and my toes popped out so it was easier to rip them off than try to fix them! They had a rag to clean the pole with but they must have set it out there at the beginning of the night because there was no liquid on it anymore to clean the pole! I was a little mad that those two sisters were in it because I know I would have won but oh well! I think I still did pretty well anyway but I haven’t heard back from them yet https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif

Congratulations, Glitter, for having the bravery and guts to do the competition. You know…I think I’ve seen those two sisters on a billboard–along the Stevenson Expressway– advertising a club out in Aurora, LOL! Maybe they were having a slow night at the home club and just stopped in to steal your glory!

Sounds like you were the REAL winner!

With Glitter’s permission,I write about last week’s amateur night…and my FIRST VISIT to a strip club. Yes, I have lost my strip club virginity!

Glitter sent me a PM about 2 weeks ago inviting me to come to the south suburban club where she danced a few weeks ago in the amateur competition. I wrote back that it was a possibility–that I had never seen a pole dance live, and had been thinking about going to a club. I’d brought the topic up with my wife-several times–if only half seriously. I told Glitter I would have to talk it over with Laurie and I would get back to her. I printed up Glitter’s e-mail, showed it to Laurie, and said I really wanted to go. Since I was really scared about the whole thing, this would be the beast way to do it, because at least I would know somebody there. To my surprise, Laurie agreed to it–not enthusiastically…but didn’t object. She even held out the possibility she might go with me!

Glitter texted me at about 10PM that night, confirming everything was going as planned. I left, arrived at about 10:30. I brought $120 in cash, knowing Chicago’s sad federal history in the 1970’s of strip club credit card fraud I was afraid to use credit–but I guess this is NOT a problem nowadays. RIght off the bat, the attendant wanted 10 bucks to park the car inthe "Valet" section…the parking lot on their property, LOL! There was a $10 cover…about the same as my music club, which charges $8 on weeknights. I came overdressed, wearing Khakis and a polo shirt–but some guys were wearing jeans and t-shirts…and even a few with shorts! I think the maitre d’ (lol! is that what they call the doorman with the walkie talkie in his ear?) sized me up because of that…he said, Hold on, sir, I’ve got JUST the girl for you!" So a young lady in a black cocktail dress, with the top open materialised in about 30 seconds.

I did get a chance to meet Glitter early inthe night…a quick hug and a hello…but she said they were not allowed to talk to customers, so I quickly withdrew and took my seat…

She offered a private dance–there were all kinds of cost structures, but basically $20 for a dance topless, 30 nude, and a bewildering array of combos and specials–hard to understand because the music was loud!. I explained that I was here to support a friend in the contest.

The club has an oval stage, narrow in the middle like a figure 8–with two Brass poles. The regular dancers varied in their pole skills, but there were two sisters that were exceptional, doing shoulder mounts, inverts, and split heels. I tipped the floor $5 after every one of the floor acts if they did any pole work at all. A number of the dancers then came up to me afterwards and sat at my table (I was down front, by the stage). I talked to a lady named Gia for a long time and explained to her that I poled also. She didn’t believe it at first, but when I started talking about her split heel move, she saw I was serious. She had watched many You-Tube videos. She asked if I knew Jamilla (!). Then she told me there was this lady–the "Boo Boo girl"–who did the "triangle trick". I said, you mean BERTYSBOOBOO? She said, "yeah!, that’s her–she’s awesome…the Boo Boo girl. I’m gonna do that trick…it’s awesome!" She told me that all of the dancers had watched that video on a laptop one day in the dressing room! They all knew about Studio Veena and Polejunkies, too!

After a while, quite a few of the stage dancers came up and talked to me…whenever I tipped the stage…

In general, the club was very busy…there is so much going on..announcements, music, dancers walking by…it was a little hard for me to keep track of everything. Definitely it was "Sensory Overload."

Finally, the amateur contest started. There was a large number of dancers–20-30, so they paraded them onto the stage in small groups. It really didn’t give them a chance to show off their skills at all. I will say that Glitter was MAGNIFICENT! She got right on the pole and was clearly the MOST skilled poler in her group. The "mass" presentation really cheated all the girls out of their chance to shine..it was over in like 2 minutes and I didn’t even realized she had been eliminated. REALLY UNFAIR to her, I thought. But you guys would have been proud of her…she was FANTASTIC, CONFIDENT, not a bit nervous!

Glitter came around to say "hi" and introduced me to her friends, a couple that had come with her. (By the way, there were couples in the club, including what looked like a group that had just finished softball–they were in their uniforms..). They had to leave in a hurry…(work tomorrow!)

So I had one final dilemma–I was pretty sure I might never go to a club again…this episode was kind of pushing it already with my wife. S-o-o-o- YES, I decided to get a lap dance… That turned out to be more than a notion–they had all given up on me earlier in the evening. So I just went up to earphone guy and I said, "OK, I changed my mind…can I get a dance?" Withina few minutes, a young lady showed up.

The dances are given in a large room with an immense built -in leather couch that winds all the way around the room– off to the side of the main club room. Uh…I thought nude meant topless..but nude meant…well, "nude" She sat in my lap at first and said her name was (******), a common Ukranian name. It is the EXACT name of my coworker…and then I got the giggles. I think she thought I was insane, so I explained why I was laughing. She said, is her last name (*****)?, which means "white" in Slavic root languages. It’s like "Mary Smith." She goes, "oh yes, that is my name, too–very common in Poland and Ukraine…can we start the dance now?"

Well, that young lady was VERY BENDY…and well, perhaps it was a tad too much anatomy…but I’m glad I had the experience. Rest assured, my hands NEVER left the couch! She stopped at exactly the moment the song was over and said, "We continue?" I said, "No, that was pretty cool, but I had to get home!" I didn’t have any change and I was embarrassed to ask, so I gave her two of the last three twenties I had (a ten dollar tip) She said the economy was TERRIBLE and nobody ever tipped anymore. We said polite good byes, shook hands and I headed out.

I headed for the parking lot with $21 left, tipped the Valet $1 for driving my car 6 feet to the door. On the way home, I filled the tank and arrived home with $0, LOL!

Laurie was still up when I got home. I gave her a detailed narrative of the entire experience…lap dance included… She looked a little irritated…but not mad. She said, "OK, well that was your Father’s day present." Then she hit the remote and we finished watching that "Therapy" show that’s on HBO, LOL!

My feelings about the experience? I had a GREAT time. I was NERVOUS AS HELL, but finally got to see some live pole. Meeting Glitter was a high point. Let me tell you that You-Tube does not do this GORGEOUS young lady justice. She is very petite, and has the deepest, darkest, soul revealing eyes…and the face of a top model. She has an amazing personality..lively, vivacious..and sweet.

So "Thank You!" Glitter! It was an experience of a lifetime!

OMG Glitter you’re so much the shit for even getting up on that stage!

I have a running fear of being in a strip club when they ask for amateurs to come on stage and dance because I wuld never have the courage!

I’m so proud of you! If they don’t hire you and you really want to dance then go for it. Check out those other places and see what comes up. if it’s meant to be it will happen.
