Walk before stand
Posted by Alexis Corinne on August 15, 2014 at 12:35 pmIs it normal that I can fireman spin if I walk around but can’t stand and spin ? I can’t lift my body but I can if I gather momentum. But I can do a baby pole climb and sit. I’m so confused. I feel like I’m doing it wrong.

It is not surprising that you find walking into spins gives you an easier time. A walk creates more momentum, so you can often just muscle through a spin, however it can increase your risk of injury! The concern with doing spins from a walk first would be if you don’t have the strength to hold your body weight. You should be able to do a pole hold and climb before you do walking static spins that are considered Intermediate. I know it doesn’t seem like a big deal until you find yourself with a wrist, elbow or shoulder injury.

See I can climb a little like I can absolutely get myself off the ground and hold myself there. I just can’t figure out how to go higher yet. I get too scared. So it’s super confusing. I think I get scared when I try to just spin from standing and I find I scare myself into going lower to try to stand soon.
Does this make sense?
I suck 🙁

Why would you say you suck? Fear is something that will hold anyone back from learning anything and it’s not uncommon at all! Instead of saying to yourself I hope I don’t fall or I can never get this, this is hard, change your perception to….I can learn this I will do this. Write it down and read it out loud before pole practice. Do you have the lessons? If so you can pole climb once then repeat like I demonstrate, this will allow you to continuously climb without going higher. 💜

I guess I’m just discouraged because I can do so,etching and something simple as a pole push-up hurts my elbow. Or I can’t spin sometimes. I’m just frustrated :,(

It sounds like you just need some structure to follow. Maybe look for local studios who teach pole work in a progressive way, building up your strength. I also have the 30 day take off program that will do the same. Most things worth while are never super easy. 🙂

Unfortunately there’s none around me, and we’re not tied to paypal so I can’t or I would of already begged for my fiancé to buy a month for me!!! I’m still gonna try haha

Bummer! Well it’s not nearly as good as the lessons here, but I do have a section of Tutorials, tips and Demos on my YT account…most of them are on my SV profile too if you’d rather watch them on the site. 🙂

There’s a reason I won’t pay anyone else for lessons but you

alexis, starting poling can be frustrating because you don’t know if you are gonna improve and it gives you doubt. I promise you, you will get better, and you will progress. You just have to be okay with doing it wrong many times before you do it right. when learning any new move, I fail many many many times. don’t let that discourage you. Also, I think the beginning stuff is the hardest. it is so different from anything you’ve ever done and you have nothing to compare it to. you don’t know what to expect. that pole climb, sit, hold took me longer to learn than anything else! but once you get those basic moves, you have a good foundation and other tricks will probably come along a lot easier. just keep doing it! I was not able to comfortably do spins for 6-8 months into poling. I did not have the wrist, shoulder strength, and my body did not understand how to spin. I still struggle with spins sometimes and really I just don’t like them that much and don’t do them often. some things you will favor over others and that’s fine. I started with zero strength and stamina. building my base strength to do those first sit,and climb took a lot of work but once I had those I had already built up so much strength. I highly recommend getting lessons here if possible. Veena’s lessons really helped me to get those moves. I was going to a studio and I just wasn’t getting it at the studio. I still go to a studio and use Veena’s lessons. I am able to understand Veena’s explanation better. I also go to a studio that I love, but I still use my lessons here. the lessons will give you direction and structure. there’s no way I would try poling without some sort of lessons. I have all the lessons I could want and it is still very challenging . I couldn’t imagine trying to figure it out on my own. It’s just too dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing. You don’t suck. And if your tricks are sucking, it’s okay and it’s temporary. my tricks suck when I’m first learning them. I struggle through them, I even laugh at them. but it’s the tricks that kinda suck or don’t look right yet, not ME! tricks can always improve. there is nothing about you that sucks! you are doing one of the most challenging and fulfilling forms of dance anyone could have chosen. that makes you brave and bold and a bad ass!
