Sydney Australia
Posted by leyrose on December 4, 2013 at 3:07 pmHi everyone,
I am looking to ask a few questions of anyone who poles in Sydney or has poled in Sydney at some stage. I am looking to move to another studio as I feel the place I am at at the moment is great but I want to branch out and try new ways of doing things! Also because as I’m moving up in the levels I will probably eventually have to move anyways as higher level classes are on earlier in the night while I am at work.
So any experience you guys? Also, id love to meet anyone local for a pole jam!

Hey LeyRose, I don’t know if you have seen any of ScarlettHoney’s videos – she is such an awesome dancer and I know she trained at Bobbi’s in Surry Hills for a long time. I would love to be half that sexy with my dancing 😉 Bobbi’s is definitely very sexy…all of her girls have a very similar, signature style. I went to Pole Candy this year and you could tell who trained there. One of my all time favourites -Dirdy Birdy- also trained there for a while and she is amazing.
It depends what you want though….one of the girls I train with now used to be at Bobbi’s but she didn’t like it cuz a lot of the girls go there specifically to learn how to strip and work the pole and they don’t seem to have as much fun as us (at least thats the feedback I heard) which is not what Kelli wanted so she left and came out to our studio.
I also went to the Australian Pole Festival in Qld this October and met some great people & amazing instructors! It depends what style of dance you want to do but Suzie Q at Parramatta is great – a lot of her students compete and dance various styles and always do extremely well. I was really impressed with the Suzie Q instructors and am thinking about picking up some floorwork / freestyle dance classes with them.
There are so many top quality studios in Sydney now. It just depends what you want to do and how far you want to travel. Shimmy has a studio near Redfern, Jamilla has one at Camperdown, SuzieQ is at Parramatta and Blush (as seen on Packed to the Rafters) is in Newtown & St. Peter’s. Then there all the ones out in the suburbs, however, you do have to be careful with them because the quality of instruction differs greatly.
Just depends what area you want to travel to. I am actually thinking about going up the Central Coast for some lessons with Daisy (she’s gorgeous and in Cleo’s video) and I want to go on a holiday to Canberra & Qld again to catch up with some of the instructors I met at the Pole Festival because they were excellent teachers that really focused on safety & correct technique as well as creativity, rhythm & performance charisma.
God I could go on and on forever:) I’m definitely up for a pole jam at some point & I have a couple of poles at home (in the Hawkesbury area) if you wanted to visit – so there’s no need to take turns!! I’m still pretty new to pole and definitely do strength moves better than sexy, improvised dance but I am totally hooked! And the awesome girls on SV are giving me plenty of inspiration and motivation to keep getting better.

Thanks so much for your in depth response lovely!! I think it is definitely Bobbi’s that I’m going to have to try out next! I love dirdy birdy she is absolutely amazing!! And I love Scarlett’s videos too, breath taking dancing!
I’m fairly new to pole too, only been doing it for 4 months but I feel like I was born to do it or something. I’m obsessed and think about it all the time, always working on new things and I feel like the place I’m at isn’t the perfect place for me to be

Heya! I pole in Sydney! I’m at Studio Verve also in Surry Hills and I love it! It is a bit more “fitness based” than Bobbi’s and we dance in barefeet, but I also love it because there’s quite a lyrical style to a lot of our dancing. I had no background in dance before poling, so for me to feel graceful is a big thing haha!
-
I’ve actually looked them up and really want to try a lyrical class! Do you currently do the lyrical classes? If so, how do you find them? I actually like dancing in bare feet too, well I wear ballet slippers but it’s the same feeling! I only wear heels for our routines because my legs look nicer haha
-
I prefer dancing barefoot too. I feel like once you get a move down it is nice to be able to focus on things like lines and pointed toes etc etc, which is kind of lost when you wear heels bc they do it for you. I took one a couple of years ago when I first started at the studio, but they were fantastic. The teachers are all amazing and so knowledgeable. The only reason I haven’t taken another lyrical class is I simply can’t afford it at the moment. But I have been taking a stretch class and an abs class as well as pole and I love it. You should come along!
-
I agree all about barefoot dancing! With me though, I feel like I can’t point my toes in my heels and I don’t know why that is!
Definitely, I would love to! Are you able to do a casual class at your studio? I don’t know if I would be in the same level as you as I haven’t been poling very long but id love to try it out!
-
pointing your toes in heels actually comes from the ankle. You can’t really point your toes properly, so flexible ankles are what give that look.
-
I’m not sure if you can or not actually, because I’ve only ever taken classes. I’m in level nine. Our levels are based on skill so usually I think what they do is have a look at what you can do and then put you in the appropriate class if you have poled before. its worth giving them a call and asking them they’re all super friendly 🙂
-
I’m really looking into it, can I do a casual class at Bobbi’s?
-
Thanx for the tip Aerial Gypsy 🙂 I didn’t know that!
-
I’m currently at Bobbi’s and can’t dream of going to any other studio. Bobbi’s is dance-orientated (rather than trick or fitness) and very encouraging of embracing your sensuality, but not everyone is wearing tiny shorts and heels. It depends on the student. Whatever is your style or look, no one is going to judge.
They do casual classes, not sure of the cost though as I think it can vary depending if you’re taking a pole instructional or another sort of class. Bobbi’s is definitely sexy-style pole, but the pole instructional isn’t really “stripper” style per se.
If you want to more booty popping and what not, you take Chilli’s Pole Grooves or SLAP classes. Some of the Pole Grooves class routines are on Youtube if you want to see if it’s your thing.
-
Thanks so much Bonnie for your response!!
I’ve been looking at taking a workshop at Bobbi’s to see what it’s like, it’s a difficult time of year at the moment though because my studio and a few others have finished classes for the year. I have a friend who does the SLAP classes and she loves them… Not sure if its really my style as I’m not that confident with myself and my body! But I definitely want to go to Bobbi’s soon!

The studio I go to is in Revesby and is called Love Pole. Very laid back has a mixed focus of fitness and sexy. Very comfortable atmosphere which I find very important because I’m a bigger girl! Instructor is lovely, and very talented
-
Oh wow thanks so much! I didn’t know there was a studio in revesby!! I’ve been looking up studios close by and it didn’t come up.. Revesby is very close for me! I will look into it!
-
Thanks so much CloSmo! I’m going to come on Tuesday next week for the open class!! So excited! The lady who answered my questions on the Facebook page was so lovely… My studio often never gets back to my questions so I’m already impressed
-
Oh and by the way do you know what order the levels go in? At my studio we don’t have elementary or prep 1.
-
The current class heirachy goes Absolute Beginners, Beginners, Elementary, Intermediate 1 (I’m pretty sure) she doesn’t have anyone above the intermediate level at the moment, but she keeps adding levels each term! 🙂
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you I was at the movies
-
No problems at all!!
I just watched an intermediate routine and think I may be intermediate or a level up? Not sure.
Either way I’m actually doing the open class tomorrow night!! Super excited!!
-
Let me know how it goes! I’m resting yet another pole injury under doctors orders otherwise I would have been there too (no where near as good as you though! I’m at the basic level still), but I will be back there next term 🙂 so if you continue I might see you around!
But yeah, let me know if you like it 🙂
-
Aww no I’m so sorry to hear that!! I hope you feel better soon!
I’m not good at all haha I’ve only been poling since August this year. I hope I like it! The studio seems so welcoming and I’m eager to start doing competitions and they seem like they encourage that
-
I’ve been doing it for about the same time and I can’t do fan kicks or a pole hold haha I have no upper body strength yet 🙁
Rachel pretty much says “if this is what you want to work towards, we’ll get you there” it’s awesome haha
-
Have you tried doing push ups? My studio makes us do a whole lot and it has helped me a lot. When I started I couldn’t do a thing and now I can do about 3 or 4 chin ups on the pole. Of course everyone is different but it’s just a thought 🙂
I’m super excited to meet her she sounds lovely
-
I can do push ups (not a lot but I can, on the knees) but the muscles in my arm keep tearing and not healing which is why I have I stop pole for a bit!
Have fun! She’s awesome, I call her my “instant best friend” haha
-
Oh no! I’m so so sorry to hear that! I hope that they start healing for you and getting stronger!
I want to thank you so much CloSmo, I loved every minute of the class today and definitely will be going back for the start of next term!
