Head Over Heels Amateur Competition – almost time to apply!
ABOUT HEAD OVER HEELS COMPETITIONS
Head Over Heels has created the East Coast's most unique competition – one which is reserved for female pole students only! That's right – pole dance instructors, "pole-fessionals" or professional-level competitors are not permitted to compete in our events.
The 2012 HOH Competition series features two categories for aspiring competitors to choose from… either the “Basic Pole” category for Beginner/Intermediate ladies or the “Anything Goes Pole” category for Intermediate/Advanced level ladies. Even more, competitors are selected through a random lottery process which means everyone has an equal chance to participate. We know you have a unique, inspiring story to tell and can't wait for you to have your moment in the spotlight! (Scroll to the bottom for information on how to apply for Round 1!)
Head Over Heels will feature two preliminary rounds and one Grand Finale. Round 1 is scheduled for August 4 2012 in Raleigh NC. Round 2 will take place in Charlotte, NC in October 2012 with the Grand Finale returning to Raleigh, NC for early December 2012. 10 ladies per category will be selected to compete in the preliminary rounds… the top four from each round in both categories will be invited back to compete in the finals. Each event will also feature three judges – two set judges and one guest judge. The 2012 event series judges are Karol Helms (USDPF Ms Sexy pole celebrity) and Ashanti Jennings (Ms Head Over Heels 2011).

Which category should I choose?
Head Over Heels encourages potential competitors to submit for whichever category they feel most comfortable with. Keep in mind that our judges are looking for different things in each category. Please review the judging criteria below to make your informed decision:
Basic Pole has four areas of critique – Showmanship, Overall Technique, Artistry/Creativity and Difficulty Level. The Basic Pole category is intended for beginner to intermediate level pole dance enthusiasts. The only rule of this category is that the dancers head MAY NOT go below her waist while on the pole – that means no inversions, handstands, laybacks, etc are allowed. The only time in which this rule does not apply is in regards to floorwork or anything not involving a pole dance trick. Competitors who do not comply with this rule will be deducted five points for EACH infraction. We encourage participants of this category to be creative with their performances by telling a "pole story", utilizing props or introducing a "pole fusion" to their performance by incorporating other dance forms or hobbies (ie: Chair Dance, Belly Dance, Hoop Dance, Ballet, etc). Spins & tricks such pole climbing, reverse grabs, combo spins, etc will be graded highly on Difficulty Level. Time length of performances must remain between 2:00 min and 2:30 min.
Anything Goes has four areas of critique – Showmanship, Overall Technique, Artistry/Creativiy and Difficulty Level. The Anything Goes category is intended for more confident pole dance enthusiasts of an intermediate to advanced level. There are no restrictions as to moves or tricks… like the name suggests, anything goes! We encourage participants of this category to be creative with their performances and floor work is encouraged, but not required. Spins & tricks such as aerial inversions, no hands thigh holds, handsprings, aerial bracket grips, combo spins, drops etc will be graded highly on Difficulty Level. Time length of performances must remain between 3:00 min and 3:30 min.
Other Judging Criteria Explained – For both categories, the criteria of Showmanship, Overall technique & Artistry/Creativity remain the same. Showmanship looks at eye contact with audience/judges, stage presence and having an engaging performance. Overall Technique looks at fluidity of movement, extended limbs, pointed feet and mastery of tricks/spins/etc. Artistry/Creativtiy will grade dancers on how unique their performance is, personalization or stylization of common tricks/spins, stories or themes as well as incorporation of dance fusions or props.
