How to prepare for Shoulder Mount?
Posted by Lyme Lyte on January 17, 2012 at 4:49 pmOK, I know your not supposed to compare to others, but come on, I am human. I believe all the Veeners who started about my time are now doing SM's….I am SO FAR from it. How do you prepare and nail this move? Are those of you who have mastered this move do alot of additional ab work? If so crunches or what? Or just, "bang" you try it and get it? Thanks!

I dont think its about ab strength unless u want to do SM without pushing off the floor. I think it has to do with getting over ur fear of not landing on ur head and that shoulder pain that u get when u practice the move for the first time. My advice for you is to lean back as low as possible and push off with ur back leg into SM… and just keep doing that until u get enough height to lock the pole with ur knees. If u practice this then one day it will just happen. A faster way to get into SM is to have a strong spotter help you flip into it… this way u'll get a feel for it and ull know what to expect.

For me it’s definitely the courage thing. I’m still inconsistent with it and seem to only get it on days I feel strong. But if I get it once, I can do it over and over and over. My instructor told me to look up at the pole and envision where I want my legs to go. On my strong days that’s all it takes.

Thanks! I will give it a try. Is this move as hard as it seems? If you are able to do an invert on both sides without kicking then u think a SM is possible?

Yeah i have and i dont think I am fearful. I feel confident that WHEN i get my legs up i will be able to wrap them around the pole. It is just getting them there! I feel no shoulder pain have the pole along my neck and not on the collar bone so i feel comfortable with that. I also feel solid w ur Veena grip as well. Guess i will just keep trying to get those legs up?????

I learned it from Veena's floor method. I practiced from the ground for a few days with the cup grip because it took me less strength than the V grip. I also thought I was a long way off from doing it but I wanted to see how far off of the ground I could get when standing and I just ended up going all the way.
Another thing that helped to get it was to use a grip aid. After I had to relearn it without but I just wanted the extra ease and security at first.

Awe thanks Veena! I would be WAY to nervous to go live with you though, unless I had a few drinks to loosen up. In which case I probably shouldn’t be attempting a SM! :). Maybe I will post a video…..thanks!

Hey Lyme. You and I started around the same time. How I got my sm was by doing Veena's pole strength routine videos. I also stretched a lot using her vids too. I also just built strength by just being on the pole. One day during a pole jam with PA we both decided to give it a go and it just happened! We werent' planning on doing it at all but with the support of each other we got it. I hope this helps you and keep me updated 🙂

Lyme, don’t feel bad…I’m not even close to getting the SM either! You are waaaaaay ahead of me!

Awe jade, i may be ahead of u but if thats the case its probably because ive been poling longer. I do see we r the same age though….

Ahhhh…If only I could’ve started this 20 years ago… I might be able to actually do something by now! Lol!

Oh i know! The girls in their 20s better appreciate it while they have it. I sure do miss being young and think how much easier some of these things would be! UGH…..

Many days I wish for my 20-something life and body. My 40 year-old body won’t allow a lot of things to happen 🙁 I can only practice twice a week tops, and if I don’t listen to my body the 80 hours I work on my feet each week will be hell. Never mind that I have a 12 year-old to try to keep up with. As much as I long for a twenty-something body, I know I don’t want my twenty-something life back. My employees are all young women in their 20s. I am reminded every day of a young woman’s struggle to figure her life out. I wouldn’t trade my old body for that. You’re doing great, Lyme!

Lyme I dnt think it requires any “extra” strength conditioning like abs.. I’ve been a gym rat and work out everyday and wasn’t def wasn’t able to do it just because it had abs.. I say practice it when your maybe an Hr into ur workout.. Be really warmed up but not exhausted. I read somewhere on here.. Someone said once you position yourself, imagine or try to bring the pole down. Not the opposite of what we would think which is getting our legs up. My mind was right and I went for it and got it. It will come. I got mine and like veena said try from the floor. Practice leg ups.. And think ur positioning through. Cause once I got it I was in shock up there and didnt knw what to do lol.. I hope that helps.. But don’t think u need abs or anything ive seen amazing bigger women pole and to the sm better then lil ol me!

I agree that it’s practice. I just did a couple every day and in the end I got it. I use cup grip and was taught to imagine that you are trying to pull the pole over your shoulder. Keep at it, you will get there! X
