Hi all, I'm trying to figure out how to do a handspring and then flip all the way over to standing.  Right now I'm using normal grip but haven't been able to figure out how to flip over without hurting my wrist.

    Any suggestions?  Thank you!

As far as I know you HAVE to use a twisted grip in order to do this.  It is similar to the twisted somersault video that was posted last week.

Yes Veena, that's it!  So I see you used the true grip and came down on the other side.  Do you think that's the easiest way?  I have a weak wrist and don't do the twisted grip, so it's good to see the true grip way!

Have you seen this tutorial for it yet? He calls it the "full moon trick" and he doesn't use the twisted grip either: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk3blUmSS1I

Handsprings and cartwheels are my favorite moves, I've done hundreds! BUT the thought of flipping over like this…. I can't even bear to try it! Is it as scary as it looks?

I was picturing a totally different move.

I do this from the Cartwheel mount handspring.. it's pretty scary & disorienting. I haven't perfected it yet, but i find it's easier (especially on the wrist) to start with your top arm extra low, so that your body can pass over it more easily, and have a softer landing. Do you feel that it's straining your top or your lower wrist? I also find it easier to land from a jacknife.

It's straining my top wrist, which is the wrist I injured a while back in kickboxing.  It's never seen the same since, so I have to be pretty careful.

When you go into it from a jacknife, do you let go with the top hand before landing?  Or do you hold it on the pole til the very end?

seems like you are talking about 2 totally diferent moves…  please correct me if i'm wrong…:  there's the full moon trick, true grip, or like my weak variation with the split grip, where you flip to the OTHER side of the pole, no snapping of the arms on that one. and then there's the flip on the SAME side of the pole, that I dont know the name…  I have it here, 2 diferent ways, at about 2.18

first from a very low hanspring and second from a cartwheel mount, both with true grip. those are much more tricky because you need to let go of the top arm at the right moment, too soon you'll fall on your head, too late and yes… i supose you could snap it. ask someone to hold you until you figure out the right timming, and only try them if you have REALLY solid mounts…

Yes i was talking abou the cartwheel mount handspring, which i do with a split grip.  I asked which wrist you feel gets strained, to make sure it wasn't the bottom (which would mean that the placement was probably off). If your top wrist is hurting even without trying to go all the way over, then maybe you could try strengthening it before moving on.  And yes as legend said, you have to remove the top hand at the moment right before you land, right after you have already taken a lean towards the landing.  Make sure to start off with that top hand extra low (i do it right below shoulder level)- it will make it MUCH easier to go over without straining. Also, as legend said, make sure your handspring is very solid & strong. Good luck & let us know how you do! xx

Top hand is fine, it's just it feels like it's going to snap off (like Shellectra said!) when I flip.

OK, I was talking about the move Legend does, not the Full Moon trick.  My problem has always been that my arm/wrist feels like it would get twisted and snap.  Just have to remember to let it go!  I'll give it a shot once I'm better–been quite ill for a few days and no sign of letting up 🙁

Yes Legend your right. The move I first posted was starting on one side then flipping over to the OPPOSITE side. You can do a Full Cartwheel and Full Roundoff on the SAME side of the pole as well. The top hand should be holding the pole tumb down/true grip. There sould be no twisting of the wrist for any of these moves.

Here is an old video of me working on the full cartwheel and Round off …I show the difference between the two towards the end of the video. 4:20 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVI52As_K3Y

I'm glad Veena brought this up…with the split grip your wrist will not stay in neutral alignment and therefore it will hurt and possibly result in injury. Either way I think you need to let go sooner as Wolf does to avoid pressure on the wrist as you come to the opposite side.

That said…I tried this a few times last night at the studio and just kept thinking I was doing it completely wrong as I could not flip into it at all. Now looking at the video I wasn't doing it wrong, I just coulnd't get it! LOL

It's a bit confusing when you're up there!

oh great Veena! I havent seen that video before. Round off, so thats how its called 😀 great!

I have a similar problem, i can do a cartwheel off pole, but i do it to the left and I do a cartwheel mount to the right side of the pole… go figure.. been trying to do the full cartwheel with no luck, but I liked the way you progressed into it, going to try that.

and as a side note… you did all that for the first time in those 5 min?! damn… thats amazing! 🙂

@Legend, I just posted a video of one of my first tries, using the split grip like you did in the first video you posted.  It doesn't seem that bad, but I feel like your hips got much farther to the other side of the pole than mine are.  Do you have any tips?

Also, please excuse me if you hear my sniffling or snorting in the video 🙂  It's a sick day!

it looks like you are lifting to the side. You need to lift forward in order to be able to push back in a 180º to the oposite side of the pole as you descend.

I'm not quite sure what you mean.  Do you mean lifting to the side initially?  Or when I start to try to flip?

yes, initially. to make the "turn" you need to step forward, behond the pole and lift in order to have enough space to open the move and return back to the other side. hard to explain better in my poor english sorry… also its not an easy move, takes some strength and a great deal of ballance… lots of practice 🙂

No, that makes sense.  Thank you!
