Platinum vs Xpert vs Minx & Chrome vs SS vs Brass & 50mm vs 45mm
Posted by DiosaDF on December 8, 2011 at 1:17 amSo I'm opening a studio with 15' high ceilings and need to outfit with poles. I need to hear from the experienced folks out there, what poles should I get? Here's what I seem to be getting from the forum:
-xpert 50mm chrome is industry standard, is that true? It's preferred, is that right?
-Brass is good for beginners and advanced training because you stick better, is that true?
-Platinum is best for spinning, is that right? They can be bolted for permanent mounting?
-Minx is the performer's preferred pole, is that right?
What is your pole experience (how many years), what pole did you learn on? What pole have you performed on? What pole was better for you as a beginner and what pole was better for you as you became more advanced?
I personally prefer the smaller pole (45mm) but won't allow myself to train on it bc I don't want to get used to the easier pole and have to perform on a thicker pole. Is there an advantage to using a smaller diameter pole?
Finally, I want a pole that is easy to maintain. Which ones are better for ease of maintenance?
Thank you in advance for your help with this!

My personal opinion is that if you are going to open a studio, it might a good idea for you to offer several finishes, like both stainess steel and brass (like what lizzyliz810 did.) Every person is different; there are women who actually stick better to stainless steel than brass and vice versa. Since your ceiings are so high, 50mm would probably be ther better option due to flexing. It would probably be safer. You might be okay with a 45mm stainless, but a 45mm brass might be too soft for that height. You should talk to platinum stages and ask them. They'll tell you the truth. I know chrome is popular, but it is a plating, and it will come off with time. ALSO, at that height, I think a 1 piece pole is a safer option than the multi pieces, so I say going with platinum stages is a better option than x pole. You wouldn't have to worry about checking joints to tighten. Your poles would be permanent. I'm not sure about the safety of lilmynx poles at that height. Both the pole studios that I have talked to in Oregon, when I was consulting about which pole I should invest in, told me that they use platinum stages in their studios and they love them. Just my opinion and info I've gotten from studios in the area. You'll get very different opinions from other people though.

PS, It wouldn't hurt to offder 1 or 2 smaller diameter poles for the shorter girls. It's harder for us smaller handed girls to grip the 50mm with our hands. We can say it's "so hard to work on a 50mm" but it is a bit of a challenge to grip a 45mm with your legs, so it is a bit of a challegnge with both poles, so I don't think a 45mm is an "easier pole." Yes, it is easier to spin on, but you lose that leg security. It's good to be able to switch between poles.

Sorry for anther post. One thing that I have learned is that if you have dry skin, apparently no metal will make a difference, so grip aides will be a necessity in a studio for those girls. Sweat actually helps you stick to the pole (weird, but true.) I learned on a lilmynx ss pole and was an uber sweaty girl. I would slip and slide with my hands, but could still stick to the polewith my body. I got my TG x pole and it was the same situation. Now I am dry as a desert from medications and I cannot stick to either my 50mm TG x pole nor my 45mm brass PS pole with my body without grip aides (although spinning on my brass pole is amazing.)

I agree with pretty much everything sensualscimitar says. I think 50s are better to learn on as it's easier to transition down than up, and a mix of brass and SS is probably a good thing. One-piece permanent poles, definitely. My studio had only brass 50mm poles and it seem to work well for all the girls I saw. (and as sensual mentioned, at that height, the added stability and decreased flex of a 50 would be a GOOD thing.)
The only point I disagree on personally is the ease of tricks/spins with a 45. I am a small girl – 5'1", with small hands – 6.5". I personally find EVERYTHING easier to perform on a 45 – even thigh holds. But that is my PERSONAL preference. My pole at home is a 50mm, and I'm glad I have it. I have to work harder with it, but I see this as a good thing, as when I do go play on my friend's 45, everything is so easy and effortless. But in a studio, to learn on, I think it would be better to have all 50s. 🙂

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! I can't tell you how helpful this has been! It also supports what I'm hearing from pole friends on FB. You Ladies are AWESOME! If you're ever in the Boston area please look up my studio, Diosa, opening this Spring. Thank you!
Erica, you will be pleased to know everyone (meaning outside of this forum, too) has recommended Platinum Stages for my studio. I'll call you next week.

Sorry my iPad got stuck while I was typing that! I too would like to start a studio, maybe at my home. I like the idea of not having to take the poles down.

@DiosaDF Oh that's great news!!! I'm so glad.
I look forward to hearing from you next week.

@tarah – that is a good question got the peeps at ps. I think you should be fine though. The 45 1 piece comes in 10 ft I think.

My studio has ceilings 12'2. Go with platinum stages. They are easy to maintain, and spin mode is super easy! You dont want to get multi-piece.
Also, go and read the blog on my page. It will help you ALOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks! i already have the PS one-piece in SS. eventually i want to get a second pole, though! i wish there were some way i could try a brass one before buying – but for the cost of going to the mainland to get to a studio would be as much as buying the pole, lol 😀

@tarah-
My friend has a 45mm xpole muliti, and she has 10' ceilings in her pole room. If it flexes more than the 50, I haven't noticed. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif I don't know about a 1 piece at that height. I agree with Sensual that that's a good question for the people @ PS.

@misskitty – thanks! i've heard that brass is much flexier than SS. i will definitely check with PS before doing anything. right now it is just something i am thinking about – i need to get a few students before i can justify buying a second pole! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_porc.gif
