What type of floor to dance on?
Posted by RikkiL on September 27, 2011 at 9:08 pmWhat type of floor do you guys prefer to dance on? Our studio has laminate wood floors and, while they are typically okay, they're a little too tacky for pirouettes or crawling. My personal pole is on industrial carpeting (no pile and no padding underneath) and that is certainly not ideal!
I'd like to hear everyone's experiences with different floor types!

I use commercial tile (a type of vinyl) in my studio. It is easy care, easy to clean, very inexpensive, holds up to heels and is AWESOME for pirouettes and floor work! The students love it amd so do I!!!

We use laminate wood in all the studios I've danced in and I find it perfect for my needs. But not for everyone I'm sure!

Invest in some foot undeez or toekinis or the like. It does not matter what type of flooring you are on, if you get a little sweaty or dirty then both of the above are difficult.
-
A lot of the girls at the studio have toekinis but they don't help with knees sticking to the floor. I doubt there is a perfect (affordable) option….just want to hear what everyone has and what they like/dislike about it. 🙂
So what type of flooring is under your pole, chemgoddess?

Oh, and Lilbit, if that's your studio in your profile pic – it's gorgeous!

Thanks RikkiL! Yes that's my new studio, I just recently moved! The flooring has been wonderful…and I love that I could play with the color, went a bit retro for fun!!

We chose laminate for both studios. I've never felt it stuck any more than the wood floors we've been on…as Chem said it all sticks if you're sweaty. So we went with laminate because it holds up better to the heels and scratches and doesn't require refinishing.

the retro girl in me is loving that floor lilbit!!!!! although i think i would have had to throw in a red tile here and there ;0 I do so love red!
that has me thinking we were going to do laminate, now i'm wondering about this instead….options options options…

nymphdancer…there is red it as well! I used gray, black, purple and red on the random colors…I LOVE red too!!! I couldn't afford to do laminate, I have it in my home. We've also used commercial tile in our previous homes for the rec rooms and it held up to black heel marks kids you name it! And cleaned up easily. I LOVE the flooring so decided to to put it in the new studio…I couldn't be happier!!!

To be honest if I couldn't do laminate I'd go with asphalt tiles before I'd go with wood. The upkeep with wood is a pain and I'm not going to freak every time someone scratches my wood floor with their heels!
Some studios I've been to you can see a "track" worn into the wood flooring around each pole!
Now if I moved into a place that already had wood I'd happily deal with it but if I'm installing a floor it's going to be laminate or asphalt tiles.

oooo couldn't see the red, but liking this idea. my studio is all going to be burlesque/retro feel to it. i had thought with pop and lock laminate we could do it ourselves but right now our biggest flooring nightmare is two of the slabs in my 1875 sqft are not quite flush.

empy by asphalt tiles do you mean like what lilbit has?
-
The commercial flooring I have is made of a PVC type vinyl. It's a standard for business floors.
-
I'm not certain they make the asphalt tiles anymore…maybe it is more like what liltbit has? It's the matte finish though…not glossy like some vinyl floors/tiles.

most of the businesses around here have a harder then vinyl type tile….oh well good question for the guys who are coming to look at my space.
