yoga dvd suggestions pleeeease
Posted by vamp79 on January 5, 2011 at 7:27 amHi everyone,
I have noticed that a few members here have mentioned yoga poses and figured i could get good advice on this. I want to incorporate yoga to my schedule but dont have any time to go to any classes. The next best thing would be to get a dvd but I am having the worst time deciding on one. I already own the p90x one but find it too long. I can only stand to do it once in a while….. Please let me knpw which ones you guys have triedvand loved. Thanks for all the help!vamp79 replied 15 years ago 15 Members · 33 Replies -

I can't be of too many help, I'm afraid. But I think there are some good yoga channels on YouTube too. Maybe someone else can recommend some?
-
I’m not very patient with youtube but that might be my best bet until I can do more research on the different dvds out there. Thanks!

I have only tried the videos from Brian Kest and they were really good. Not sure what your goals are with it, but If you strive for more flexibility a class with a good teacher will push you unlike a video. Never the less, to learn the poses alone a video is great.
-
Yogatoday.com has some good routines. They also have lots of free classes you can get through itunes.
Eion Finn has quite the following as well. His 'happy hips' one is good for opening the hips.

shellypoles- I’m looking to improve my strength even more than flexibility. Trying to hold my legs up while spinning is very hard for me and I know that yoga will help with that. Thanks for the suggestion, I will look him up as soon as I get home today : )

freethesun – great site! I browsed a bit and loved it, can’t wait to really look around. Thanks!

Brian Kest's videos might be good for you then, they are power yoga- a bonus is that he is nice to look at 🙂

I love Rodney Yee. His videos are very relaxing yet challenging. The camera angles are great for following along.

Trudy Stiler (sting's wife) has a great series of dvd's out.
I have her "Warrior Yoga" dvd and it's my fav. I plan on getting her dvd for ballet bar too…

yogatoday.com
dashama – online vids and 30 day yoga challenge
-
I have a quick question for those of you that use yogatoday.com. Are the lessons taught for one pose at a time or are they like a full workout session? I think I will benefit from the lessons there, thanks for the suggestion ladies!
-
they're taught as sequences although if you do the beginner ones they are pretty good at explaining in depth, and you can pause and rewind if you're still unsure.

My favorite general yoga is "Ali MacGraw – Yoga Mind & Body". It's kind of an old one, from the early 90s I think, but it finds its way into my dvd player at least twice a week. If you want a more beginner-ish one try "Hemalaya's Yoga for Young Bodies" which has 3 routines on it. For a more intermediate challenge I like "Hemalaya's Yoga for Urban Living" but if you're not used to yoga take it easy with this one at first(I ended up hurting my back the first time I tried it with too much enthusiasm). Hope that helps!

You know what? That Ali McGraw one IS really good. I still have it on VHS and it still does the trick.
-
Perfect! Another one to look up : ). I have a pole class in an hour and then coming back home to do my homework on all these yoga dvds. Can't wait to order one and start yoga at least twice a week.

Has anyone tried the valentino brothers dvds or worked with them in real life? They always interest me. www.valentinobrothers.com
http://www.youtube.com/user/Elasticsteel ( i am going to use this guys older videos for some dynamic stretches to make it easier to learn how to hold upright splits, open v's, and to be sure my muscles are strong in stretches. Also going to look into martial arts stretching.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVq9nL_tLbo ( this girl goes through some great stretches, but make sure you read little box first)

Hey Vamp, Go to your local library. Mine has a TON of yoga DVD's. I happened to check out Shiva Rea and did it yesterday and WOW. She is awesome. She's very much on our level I think – I could definitely see her poling! One of her DVD's, Vinyasa Flow, supposedly infuses dance with yoga so I just purchased it from Amazon.
Jess, I have the Valentino Bros 2 stretching DVDs. I have only done one of them so far. The production value is very poor, but hey, it is only 15 bucks! One of the stretches though worried me because it is contraindicated by ACE and the Navy training centers. It hyperflexes both knees and is pretty dangerous. It's on page for of this document: http://www.usuhs.mil/bde/physicalfitness/navydocuments/physicalfitnessseriescontraindicated.pdf
The valentino bros lay all the way down with their backs fully on the ground, stressing the knee even more than in the picture in the pdf. I have to say I prefer my yoga dvd's better than the Valentino's dvd.

Ok, so I did one of Shiva Rea's DVD's this morning. It kicked my ass,but it felt SOO good!! I have to say that what she teaches is so applicable to pole! The continuous slow flow of the moves in the 'water' section reminds me of the way Alethia dances, so fluid, controlled and sensual. The fire section had a TON of push-ups which is great for all that upper body strength we need. There was also a lot of hip opening (perfect for splits), back bends (I love me some bendy backs) and spinal undulations (very sexy). The music is world music and has a hypotic quality to it. She's not a 'typical' yoga teacher. There is a lyrical, rhythmic quality to her movement. I used to teach yoga and have studied it for years, so I've been exposed to a lot of yoga. She's different. I am really enjoying her fresh, creative, and hip style. Now that I'm thinking about it, she is my new fav.
I got it from the library and I'll definitely be getting her other dvds. Most people on Amazon rave about her Yoga Shakti DVD. 218 people gave it 5 stars!

My favourite yoga DVD is Yoga's Journal's Complete Beginner's Guide. It's an hour, so just slightly shorter than the P90X DVD but I find the pace much better, and similar to the P90X yoga DVD it's easy to skip through so if I don't feel like a particular move, I just move to the next one, or the next series. The DVD also has two 15 minute routines and an encyclopedia of moves. I think it's around $30 (Canadian), and you can order it from their website.
Rodney Lee DVDs are also a good suggestions. I have a couple on my computer, so I don't know their names.
-
wow, you guys are the best. Thanks for all the ideas. I just ordered a couple of the mentioned dvds fron Netflix. Hopefully hubby won’t get mad when all he gets in the mail are yoga dvds lol. I will post how it goes as soon as the first one arrives!

I just want to second Angel's vote for Shiva Rea, when I first looked at her Yoga Shakti video a few years ago I was intimidated and turned away by her under stated style of teaching. But now that I am more familiar with the poses and different styles of yoga, etc., I watched her again last week and was enthralled. She's into dancing and surfing so yeah, she know's what's good. For beginners to yoga in general, I would also like to recommend Baron Baptiste. He's a great instructer and has a very well balanced practice.

forgot to mention this free series currently available too: http://www.hulu.com/yoga-zone
I haven't watched it yet but I suggest checking it out before Hulu takes it out of rotation as they often do.

Hi!
@Angel, which DVD do you have? Is it "Daily energy" or "Fluid power"? They're both entitled Vinyasa flow yoga. I'm really looking forward to trying it!
-
Hi Pink Bubbles! I was referring to Daily Energy in my original post. Since then I tried Fluid Power which includes some segments from Daily Energy. Fluid Power has workouts from several of her DVDs on it and you can select and piece them together using her 'matrix'. Lot's of variety on Fluid Power! I don't think you can go wrong with either DVD!
