one of my teachers, kyra (who was in uspdf east and is in the amateur comp) is the one who showed me this move and mentioned it being in a video somewhere, but i’ve never seen it. all i can tell you is that it’s really, really hard. she actually said this was her nemesis move- she was trying to get it for a few months before it clicked for her.
when you go into rockstar, you are in it only for a second. you literally throw your right leg up in the air, and as it gets high enough, you transition your bottom hand from the push-pull for rockstar into the grip for butterfly, while you unhook your left foot, throw your hips up in the air and hook your right leg on the pole above your top hand. it’s a lot going on in a second and you’re pushing up into the butterfly (because your right leg has to hook at the knee on teh pole ABOVE your top hand).
does that make sense? it’s tough to explain.
when i’m in class with her again i’ll see if i can get her to do it again and video it. it’s a really pretty move that looks deceptively smooth and easy! i would think a good starting point for it would be working on the spinning cradle right into a butterfly while still spinning.

Please someone show us what a rockstar spin is. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif Even better, a vid on the rockstar spin to butterfly.

How’d I know that when I saw the topic thread in the daily message thing that you would be the one who started the thread? https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif Just let me know when you’re ready to attempt it (after enough people explain how to do it) and I’ll spot ya. Just promise not to kick me in the head, anywhere else is fine, but head kicks suck.

Here is the rockstar spin….its right in the middle of the vid

I’m confused as to how you would get into the butterfly from that spin, my hands would be in the wrong position. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_scratch.gif

Id like to see that spin into the butterfly, are there no vids with it in? also any tutorals for the rockstar?,think i had issues when i tryed it before https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif x

veena, you have to switch your hands right when you go into the spin so that you can butterfly up.

So this is how I picture it:
Briefly in rockstar spin,
drop bottom hand underneath,
move outside hooked leg to opposite side of pole, (can this step be left out?)
apprentice up into butterflyDoes that sound right? I’m having trouble apprenticing while spinning, any suggestions?

I was in class with amyxshi when Kyra taught this combination. I didn’t do the moves together, lol, but it’s something to work towards. I could barely get the rockstar. I’m flexible but I really need to work on positioning my top leg.
Perhaps it may be easier if you do the rockstar and hold it. Once you stop spinning, then maneuver into the butterfly until you can slowly do the combo without stopping.

ok, got it on film! also had maybe too much fun playing with imovie… hhaahah

Thanks so much, Amy!
Wow. This looks really impressive! Similar technique as Hero to Butterfly now that I can see it. Would have to have very strong and flexible shoulders (at least, I think so)! Just doing a static Hero to Butterfly nearly put my shoulder out (strong side Hero, weak side butterfly – am now training my weak side Hero to match the strong butterfly) and spinning it would be so much more difficult. My rockstar is strong on the correct side for me to go into strong side butterfly, so I might give this a slow, careful shot when I’m not hungover and exhausted? https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_razz.gif
Be careful, ladies!

i can do a hero/apprentice to butterfly easily, and i can tell you– i DEFINITELY can’t do the rockstar/butterfly combo…
when i saw kyra do it again today, i realized that all your weight is hanging off your right arm– you are actually throwing your leg up and hooking it on your arm, not the pole– sort of like the allegra.
-
She hooks her foot in the end on the pole, I thought, when she takes it out into extended butterfly, but to get up, yeah on her arm. I’d have to try it to see. I reckon you can totally do it, you’re so strong! I mean a controlled flag dismount?! Last time I tried Hero to Butterfly I was doing it on spin mode for some stupid reason, so that’s probably why I had trouble pulling into it. Heh. The Allegra is really hard on my leg, not the arm that’s holding my entire weight up. I do hook my leg over my arm to get back up, and that takes a bit of effort… but I have a huge bruise on my thigh the size of a city from the Allegra, but my arms and shoulders are fine https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Every move will be harder for some in different areas, I guess. This is such an awesome combo!
-
lol i can’t do ANYTHING on spin that involves being upside down https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_puke_r.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_puke_r.gif … so props to you! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif
hm, i dont think that the allegra is particularly hard per se– i mean, if you can do a one-handed spin you can hold yourself up, but i was pointing out the leg-hooking-on-the-arm thing because i didn’t realize that before, and i think it makes it easier to mentally break down the trick. but i agree, it looks awesome!

I love the class’ reaction the first time of just "oh my GOD! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif "

P.S.
We should cross-link this page to "first move that WOWed you" https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

What is a hero/apprentice amyxshi ? We actually did this rockstar to butterfly spin in our master class last week. But the instructor called it bow and arrow spin into the butterfly. It was very difficult to push up into the butterfly. Some of us were able to do it. But I felt and looked awkward. I’m gonna work on this to smooth it out.
