spinning scorpio
Posted by amy on August 17, 2009 at 8:54 pmhey ladies!
i’ve been poling for a while now… can do the no-handed scorpio on both sides, no problem. i’ve seen women do some gorgeous spinning scorpios in videos recently, and i’ve been trying it, but i haven’t been able to get very smooth with it. any tips on how to make it one fluid motion? a slow breakdown would be ideal but i dont know if that’s possible. any help at all would be great, thanks!

Easy Peasy hun!
Think of the spinning scorpio as 3 moves not 1. This is how Wendy taught it to us and I can do it everytime without fail now.
I prefer to mount into scorpio on my dom side so this is what I suggest doing. Get into Scorpio, swing your extended leg around into a thigh hold once your in your thigh hold switch arms and release the opposite leg as you would normally in a scorpio.
So
1)scorpio
2)swing outside leg around into thigh hold
3)get out of arm pit lock
4)switch arm pits
5)release outside leg -
I call the move that Charley described as the scorpio switch.
There is also a spinning scorpio move that involves going into a helicopter and then into a scorpio and spin down the pole and another spin that involves being in scorpio position with hands on the ground, then swinging the free leg around the back of the pole to spin it to the ground. I wonder what those are called?

Just to add on to what Charley said:
Extending your free leg and bringing it around you parallel to the floor really gives you the momentum you need to spin, so that you can shift your torso around through thigh hold and into scorpio on the other side.
Once you hook on the new side, you will find that you’re still spinning a little bit. Wait it out. Just hold the scorpio on the new side with your back nice and arched and allow the momentum to stop.
Then, extend your newly free leg and bring it around parallel to the floor, and repeat going the other way.
Waiting out that last momentum spin really "finishes" the move before you go the other way.
Oh and dont be afraid to use your hands until you feel really comfy with this! -
Hi Jenn – the scorpio with your hands on the ground I think is known as the "scorpio handstand", then you can swing your extended leg around to give you momentum to spin out of it, again – I absolutely *love* that move!! One of my faves – dunno why!!

thanks for all the tips ladies! i didn’t realize you need to transition into a thigh hold– maybe compeltely obvious but, https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif
i will be trying this out probably tomorrow and hopefully will have a positive update on progress. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Sure guys I’ll do a quick video tonight over at the studio and post it up on youtube.
I’ll show exactly how Wendy showed us to do it. Don’t try this unless you can already air invert, scorpio and thigh hold and it’s helpful to be able to scoprio opposite side – but if you can’t this is a good way to get comfortable in it. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
Check tonight on my YT.

yea its for ‘safety’ reasons.
This is a business site, I totally understand the inappropriateness of posting tutorials on a forum for an online school. I wouldn’t throw a pole jam at my studio and let other pole instructors from other schools come in and TEACH moves to people (although they are welcome to come and play!!!!!) so I understand that Veena wouldn’t want people coming into her place of business (just because it’s the internet doesn’t make it any less of a studio) and teaching.
And if anything, for me, I am thankful because Veena has let me advertise on here quite a bit and I’ve built up a wonderful group of friends and clientele from this site. She doesn’t have to allow that. She does give us a lot room as far as instructors without expecting much if anything in return – she has even said on threads I have posted to come out and visit me. That’s kind of like an endorsement and it’s very generous.
At any rate I am more than happy to help you guys out with the move. http://www.youtube.com/charleyisagirl" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Yes, Castle… I said for "safety" reasons BUT I also stated that you need ask permission to post a tutorial. I have let some instructors post tutorial here, but they ask me first. If you unsure if something is ok, just ask!! I have no problem with people linking the occasional youtube vids into the forum. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

Does anyone know if CHARLEY had made her tutorial on the spinning scorpio/scorpio switch? I can’t seen to find it on her site or you tube. I would really like to see a breakdown/tutorial of this move. I just love it. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_question.gif

I’m also asking V if it is okay to post the tutorial/link to tutorial here https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Hi, when doing the leg switch in the scorpio switch, do I extend the leg around into the thigh hold the same time as I change my armpit switch? Or do I switch the leg into the thigh hold then switch my armpit grip?It looks like Wendy is switching the leg the same time she is switching her armpit in her Wendy’s workshop vid. I tend to do the arm and leg switch together but don’t feel safe doing so https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_question.gif Thanks,Joni

can I at least have a link to a video of someone doing it? not a tutorial

For some reason this move is still eluding me….I can scorpioon both sides..can thigh hold with either leg…but somehow I’m still getting lost in between…ahhhhhhh!!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_scratch.gif
Charley…I would love to see your vid…?!?!?!?
-
That move looks so cool. Roxy you’ll get it. Just keep trying. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

I have been practicing this move and find that I have to extend and spin switch my leg fast to get the momentum to switch my armpit grip. And if I go slow, I don’t have enough momentum to turn my body to switch my armpit. But when I go fast, I feel like I going to fall on my head. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_scratch.gif Charley, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif ,we are all waiting for your tutorial. THANKS

If Charley doesn’t mind I can make one tomorrow for you guys…..I don’t want to do it if she has one all ready to go, that would be uncool. I think I might approach it a little differently, but I don’t want to bust in and take over. My new filp cam makes it super easy to post. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif
