I agree with the soles of the feet thing. That is strictly not allowed at any of the classes I teach! Haha!

Another peeve of mine is people who make excuses after excuses, instead of practicing! This is more of a teaching peeve – but sometimes when I teach a student how to do something, and theyon’t get it after the first or second time, they’re like "Omg my hands are so sweaty, I bet I have a medical condition, this is impossible for me", or "no that just totally won’t work for me, my body can’t do that, nope, I have hamstring issues" and just give up straight away! GRRRRR! I want to slap them! Just coz you can’t do it today doesn’t mean you won’t be able to do it tomorrow! These are the hardest people to teach, coz they throw every encouragement you give them back in your face.

I’d be interested to hear more pet peeves.

Hmm how about literally jumping into a move without having the strength.

I’ve seen plenty of girls injure themselves by kicking or jumping up into an invert so much they miss the pole or collide with it. Boom! crash! owwwwww https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_tongue.gif

    I hope I’m not one of these "bad beginners"…… https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_pale.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_silent.gif

I noticed some girls climbing with the soles of their feet and wondered why they do it because it looks awful and awkward. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_scratch.gif It must be harder to learn climbing moves if you start out all wrong… they have to eventually shift their legs/feet anyways.

The whole pointy toe rule goes for most dance forms so there is little excuse. My toes on my right foot can’t bend because of surgery but not everyone has that excuse. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_razz.gif I know that sometimes I forget to point because I’m soooo occupied with hand placement or something else but it is bad. The sooner you do something the quicker it becomes a habit.

My peeve is seeing people walk as if they were walking on the street because walking heel-to-toe does not look graceful. In many dance forms you are told to dance on the balls of your feet because it makes it easier to turn and do quick movements. And being on the balls of your feet doesn’t mean you have to be all the way on your toes or pretend to wear a pair of invisible platforms but just lift the heels of the ground.

I think a lot of the issues you see with beginners is that they pick up a pole, watch pole dancers on the net, and then try to replicate the moves without any guidance or knowledge of the basics. If they lack dance classes in their area all they need is to pick up a good DVD set or take on-line classes. I know videos don’t replace teacher time but it is better than watching a Felix vid and thinking, "Oh I can do that… I’ll try it right now." (BTW I got my Art of Pole set in and I’m so loving it! I was getting sick of Vertical Dance.)

    Great thread!

    Pet Peeves

1- When people truly think they have nailed something and i can’t point out 100 different things about it that are awkward and unsafe.

2- Doing moves but not really polishing them or understanding them

3- sweaty hand wiping – I know I do it too but I really hate to see my hand wiping across my butt before I go into something

4- Not properly balancing an aysha, straight edge, handspring, etc- AGAIN I am so guilty of this it’s not even funny

5- Not switching directions around the pole

6- All tricks and transitions or spins

i agree actually ^^ im a stickler for picking out ppl monkey footing the pole. what sucks is on youtubes expert village one of them teaches to climb that way -o- no no no no its horrid!!!

    so yea

    1) no monkey feet
    2) point the toes!!
    3) getting up gracefully/sexy (i actually saw a performance vdo the way she got up i was yelling at the com;;)
    4) the new girl squat (a term used for pointing out the new girls in a strip club.. hip rolls down the pole squat squat come back up) .. new girl squat… *shakes head*
    5) wearing long shorts & large tshirts .. enough said
    6) excuses ^^ u can do anything it just takes time AND EFFORT!!

    things im guilty of

    1) hand wiping.. theres sand on our floors cuz the buildings old and they had to use it to lvl the concrete floor before laying the wood floor down.. im always wiping my hands.

    2) random hand habits. one used to be the gimp hand.. hand to my side like im a trex.. now for some reason its in my hair.. not like doing n e thing sexy with it.. just running it through my hair over n over n over -o-

    3) only going one way… sadly being desperate n getting the electra pole i sadly trained myself to mostly go one way, if i catch myself ill usually try n like cradle or something the other way but yes, its a very bad habit for me

    4) brain farts… if i get nervous ill brain fart and end up doing the same move how many times..

    5) when on the floor and doing floor work for some reason i get really stiff and my side Vs look horrid and my neck disappears

    6) not learning to walk in heels? rofl for some reason i always find good times to roll my akle in my heels. i bought me heels that have the circle heel in hopes itd help me keep my balance.. just doing hip alternations and even bending over to get a drink.. i always seem like im gonna fall on my face.

haha! I’m glad this didn’t turn into a mean thread…I was afraid of that!

Charley I totally agree with the hand wiping..and I am sooo guilty of this myself!

A lot of the things that peeve me I actually notice first in my own videos…of course I try to correct the issue.

I know I said pointy feet…but the thing that really urkes me is when someone does a gemini and the whole foot is flexed! ahhhh!

Oh me oh my. Im so guilty of some of these https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_surprised.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

    My annoyances:

-Climbing with soles & your not doing chinese pole. I really dont see this very often, and dont see why people would do it as I find it awkward feeling. Yes it may hurt less when learning but NO PAIN NO GAIN!

-People doing moves they are REALLY not ready for. I used to do this a lot until I got hurt and had to take a complete break from my pole for almost a month to heal up. So now I cant stress enough how important it is to WAIT until your strength is where it needs to be! Doing it properly not only saves you from hurting yourself but it looks SO much prettier.

    My annoyances about myself:

-Wiping my hands on my butt or wiping the pole with my hands before I go into a move. Lately its been really hot so my pole gets major slippage but Im finding that sometimes I do it out of reflex and I need to get OUT of that. Im wiping when its not necessary. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_thumbdown.gif

-Not walking around the pole on the balls of my feet. Flat feet is NOT cute especially when you are very short, like myself. (Thats why I just prefer to dance in heels) https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

-Brain farts! I end up walking around the pole aimlessly cause Im thinking of what to do and what NOT to do cause Im still working on it and it may look funny. And I always do my vids uncut (Im BAD with editing) so I get nervous Im gonna blooper it all up & have to retake the vid a million times. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_thumbdown.gif

Roxy, if I was worried about the thread I would have sent you an email….I know my members are great and wouldn’t use it to specifically pick at someone. I seem to be pmsing myself so I’ll give it a go…..

I also don’t like the "no pain no gain" theory of some polers.

I don’t like it when pole dancers compare themselves to other pole dancers….everyone has their own strength and we all progress differently. I know I say this over and over….only compare your progress by YOUR progress, not the woman who started dancing the same time you did! *says with wagging finger* I was guilty of this and still am on occasion. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif

I am a wedgie picker!!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif It looks bad and…well it looks bad. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_geek.gif

I also hate how unprofessional some pole "professionals" can be. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif

    i agree tho

it kinda sucks girls get discouraged because the other gals in class are picking stuff up faster than them. everyone learns at a diff pace and in diff ways so not everyone is gonna be on the same exact lvl =\

tho i do have my idols =D and wish i could be at their lvl =D fandom is alright tho right? hehe https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

walking in heels is all about walking on tip toe (or demi-point for ballet dancers). use the heel for balance, that’s it. nothing special there.

My biggies are pointed toes, "flingers" (using momentum and flinging / throwing yourself into a move), beachiness to others who aren’t so good and defeatism.

As for competitiveness, the only person to beat is yourself and as we used to say in a top restaurant I cooked in, you’re only as good as your last plate (read pole move). Try to beat your best and realise some days won’t be so good.

I’m guilty of a lot of things, and I’m not trying to make excuses https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_tongue.gif but I’m self-taught (one of those YouTube learners, haha) and have absolutely no dance experience, so the little things are a learning process. I’m also aware of most (I think) of those little things I do wrong so at least I know what to work on.

    Peeves about me:
-sweaty hands… I have Tite Grip for doing uncut dances or if I’m going to be inverted a lot, but I’m trying to not rely on them.
-wedgie picking. I’ve been trying to learn to subtly do it, https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif It’s either fix it or have half your butt showing on video, so it’s the lesser of 2 evils I think but still very unattractive
-pointed toes. I’ve gotten better, at least I think so. Keeping up on the balls of my feet when walking is a challenge still, I find it very hard to do hip rolls that way for some reason. Must work on this more…
-weird hip thingy – I’ve noticed right before I do a spin I’ll lean heavily to one side and it makes one hip stick out funny when I’m doing that slight pivot on the inside foot. I’ve seen it in others, too, but I cringe when I see myself doing it. Not pretty.
-Moving too fast! – I feel like I have ADHD sometimes. I feel like I’m not doing enough interesting things when I dance so I move around a lot, but when I watch the videos, I’m jumping all over and never in one place more than 2 seconds. Must learn to slllloooowww down…
-not having enough dancey moves, as in I want to learn more than just the hip rolls and grinding the pole.

    Annoyances with others:
-too much dance or not enough.
-in practice vids, people not editing out the stupid stuff like just walking around or the moment of staring at the pole wondering what to practice next. (A little hand or pole wiping is fine)
-NOT MATCHING UP WITH YOUR MUSIC! For the love of God, match the mood of the song and the pace of it. People have no problem tapping their foot to the beat but why can’t they move to it???
-kinda along the same lines… always dancing the same. Same pace, same style, everything. Change it up a bit (I’m guilty of this too, I know)

That’s all I can think of, I’m sure as I go through more videos I’ll remember more…

Hee hee this is more a reply saying sorry for doing the annoying things, not that I can post vids anyway, due to not having a camera that films (actually mine might but I’ve never used that function, hmm, anyways). I’m a pretty bad: wedgie picker (omg hilarious term btw!), hand wiper (SO bad! I’ll do one move, wipe my hands, one move, wipe my hand etc etc), and looking at other people and wondering why I can’t do stuff (I’m REALLY bad about this ‘cos I’ve been learning for more than 2 years but we don’t really get much teaching at our studio at the upper levels and I don’t have a pole at home to learn from teh interwebs so there’s SO much that I think I should be able to do and can’t).

I do get a bit frustrated with the "stream of pole consciousness" vids ie. the ones that are like 10mins long and are just people mucking around. It’s not that I don’t think people should be filming them ‘cos I think they’re a great personal learning tool but I’m not entirely clear why they need to be posted unless you want specific feedback, in which case, 10 mins of stuff is a lot to feedback on! And all it means is I won’t watch it because when it comes down to it, it’s the individual’s prerogative to post what they want and the viewers choice to watch it or not https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cat.gif

Omg if I watch one more video or routine to Black Velvet I will rip off my own arm just so I have something to beat that person with! Find a new song!! Gah!

(hmm i feel like i sort of sugar coated how i feel about that song….lol!!!)

I want to jump add that I agree any video longer than one song is annoying! Especially if you’re an awesome pole dancer because it is difficult to pin point specific things you want to show people in the video and you have to wait for it to come up.

Pole Dancing on beat is a bit of annoyance to me because I think dancing with the under current of the song looks much better but that is a personal thing.

Things that annoy me When watching other dancers:
#1… Not pointing toes. Unless on the rare occasion that something, like Argentine tango, is stylized to have a flexed foot (never women, sometimes men) feet, in my opinion, should always be pointed because it makes your legs look longer and more shapely.

#2…. Walking with no stage presence, or like an elephant. Enough said there. (This is more from ballet and jazz classes)

#3)…. Not moving with the music, or music that just doesn’t go…

    Bad habits of mine:
1…. I sometimes spin on my heels because I did folk dancing, and the spins that are really fast with a quick stop cannot be done in demi point.

2… Getting bored and not dancing like I can. Normally done at work when I’m tired and sore, or when I think no one is paying attention.

3… Not always walking around the pole on demi point.

4… Dragging my toes when I walk, especially in heels.

I probly have a lot more that I can’t think of yet. I will find more when I can start filming.

haha…the next time we each post a vid we are gonna be analyzing to make sure we don’t "annoy" anyone! rofl!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

I do have to agree with Charley on the long vid…although I do know I’m guilty of that every once in a while..

I also find it annoying when people post 15 vids that are 15 seconds each…why not just make one longer vid??? https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

I think my biggest annoyance is still when someone is working on a move that they clearly aren’t ready for….for example…trying to do twisted grip hs when they don’t have a strong invert or be able to do a straight edge, aysha..etc. I think this is more of a safety concern than it is annoyance… https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_tongue.gif

I hate it when beaches dance to the song that you’ve been thinking about dancing to as soon as you get a free second. They post a video that doesn’t just outshine you, but makes you wonder why you’re even pole dancing.

I don’t like it when people are like, "Nothing much in this video", and then they whip out a move they’ve never done before, and they do it to awesome perfection, secretly expecting you to see it, and be like, "But what about that straight edge, that is SO NOT NOTHING MUCH". It’s a bad script that while I occasionally follow, I do not enjoy.

I am annoyed by booty-wipers. But I like wedgie pickers. RhiannonNicole is like… master of the wedgie pick, and I feel it seriously enhances her dance.

I like stream of consciousness practiceers, but I do wish they’d make short videos. I like videos in the 3-4 minute range. I am annoyed by 1:15 second videos. I just skip parts of really long videos. Sometimes in a really long video, I look at the comments to make sure I didn’t miss a newly perfected supermove hidden by a video description.

I really don’t like threads like this, because we women have no need to be more insecure, but I also love to complain. SO LETS GO.

And I do like…. everything annoying. I’LL FLEX MY FOOT IF I WANT! wahahhahaha.

ok i am also in rare form last couple days so ready to have at it here .. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_twisted.gif

i will pick out my own things that i notice and don’t like when reviewing my vids

1)think everyone said this but flexed feet! i was like omg when i saw some of my vids and it looks like my foot is about to plow through someones stomach rather than looking pointed and sexy. i am really bad for that https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_puke_l.gif

2)walking around looking confused and letting it show. just do some filler moves til you can decide what move to do next. so much more attractive than staring into space hoping the answer will suddenly appear in the sky. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_idea.gif

what i dont like that i have seen in other vids or about some fellow polers..

    3) having to feel like i have to dowmnplay my accomplishments to make people who are less advanced feel better
(i could literally strangle the breath out of someone when they tell me i’m a "lucky bitch" for landing new moves! it’s like no! your just a lazy B**** and thats why your not progressing AT ALL after over a year w the pole!!!!!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_evil.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_exclaim.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_surprised.gif I work hard and don’t give up bc i cant land something right away ( i have been trying aysha and handspring for atleast 6months now but i am hardly about to say i cant do it or hate on people who can. i know i can do it. just not this second and thats ok. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif

3)exssessive hair tossing. i agree a well timed hair toss or 2 looks great in a video, but when i see you do it 11 times in a 3 min. vid it makes me wonder if you realize your suppouse to be selling me on how sexy and talented you are, your not filming a shampoo commercial… it just makes it look like you dont know how to come up w anything intresting and so your just going to rely on alot of hair flying around. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_thumbdown.gif

i’m sure theres other things, but unless something really gets under my skin i usuallty barely notice, and am more apt to focus on what i do like, but this was fun to do. especially with my slightly foul mood lately. hope no one took offense to anything. even if you flip your hair 67x in a vid, i will still find things to enjoy about your dancing! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_sunny.gif

I too am annoyed by monkey feet, non-pointed toes, wedgie-picking, and hand-wiping. But also: when people lean out away from the pole while walking around it. I think it looks awkward.

But mostly I get annoyed when I try to video myself on the pole. When I’m dancing, even in front of the mirror, I feel like a pretty graceful butterfly, delicately and expertly spinning around the pole in time with the music. When I check the video camera… I am very sadly disappointed to realise I no longer look like a graceful butterfly. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif Le sigh.

What annoys me the most is Studios that teach classes and the instructors don’t have a clue about how to properly teach technique thus endangering their students or when you pay to learn and end up teaching the instructors.

I honestly can say that I don’t have too many pet peeves when it comes to other people’s videos. I mean, I think we should all recognize that people have all sorts of different reasons for getting into pole–and that many different factors may affect levels of performance.

There are casual polers for whom poling is like a social sport–a time and place to get together with other people and get a decent workout. One subset of this group are the You-Tube polers (like myself) who don’t really have any studio access. And then there are serious amateur pole athletes. There is also a professional subset of erotic dancers interested in perfecting their skills for work and as a way to improve their income (nothing wrong with that!). And finally, there are competitive polers.

Some people don’t have time…or a decent space…or a decent camera to make a video that looks nice, or they don’t have or can’t figure out how to use editing software. Even so, they want to participate and make the effort and I think it’s important to be as supportive as possible. I HAVE seen some pretty wild videos where it’s been hard not to cringe…young ladies taking a running start and HURLING themselves at a Carmen Electra on Springs, wedding rings scraping the ENTIRE distance from ceiling to floor, LOL! But you can often see the fire and the desire in their eyes…so I think we just have to search hard for one good thing in those videos and point it out…then pray they sign up for Studio Veena!

I hope I don’t come off as being too critical of the thread…I just think that maybe we need to acknowledge that many ladies are basically poling for fun and their videos are just a way of being part of the conversation and having a social exchange with other polers.

LOL–on a much lighter note, I think I have committed just about EVERY peeve listed in this thread…including stealing somebody’s song!

I have this EXTREMELY annoying tic of pulling the right shoulder strap on my sleeveless T-shirts. It shows up in all my videos–I hate it…and I often chop up clips to edit this habit out!

    very interesting thread!

    my pet peeves:

    1) point those toes!

    2) don’t take it so seriously! i get down a lot about not being able to do a move or look like my favorite dancers, but my shortcomings are NOT what got me into poling in the beginning. relax and enjoy it!

    3) when we beat ourselves up. im a huge offender of this, "my boobs are too little" "i have no chin" "my nose is so huge" "OH MY GAWD THOSE STRETCHMARKS!" but seriously, i wish we all could put aside our insecurities and realize how truly beautiful we ALL are on this site.

    4) https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_batman.gif <– batman needs to lighten up a bit. he takes himself too seriously.

and those are my pet peeves lol.
