I know how frustrating it is (believe me!). Try not to be so hard on yourself. It’s always good to leave something alone for a bit and work on something else–a spin or a transition or pirouettes. Being back at Square One isn’t so bad! The basics are things that we all need to go back to all the time. Try to be patient. I "got" the caterpillar and then lost it for, like, 5 months. And besides, I think the concept of mastering a move is a misnomer. I mean, I know how to walk around the pole and so I think I’ve "mastered" it, but I can’t guarantee that I won’t ever trip or run into the pole (I swear I’ve done that a bunch of times…totally sober, too!). I think that’s what’s exciting about this art: you kind of get a chance to get in touch with yourself every time you get onto the pole and some days are incredible and others, not so much.

The windshield wiper is when you continuously switch from gemini (or scorpio, it doesn’t matter which you start with) to scorpio (or gemini) without hands. Each time you make the switch, you "lose" a few inches as you travel down the pole, so it’s very exciting to watch. So basically your legs are going back and forth around the pole quickly and you are sliding down the pole in an inverted position. And yes, StellaBella does an amazing one in her Immortal video!

Thank you Foxy & cbr! I started on a Lil Mynx so I wouldn’t mind switching out my x for a Lil Mynx, but I’d rather not have to go through the whole process of selling, shipping, then buying & waiting. And I’d rather not drill into the ceiling to put up the mount in a rental. But I’m counting my chickens before they’re hatched ’cause we haven’t even signed the lease yet!

I wonder if she has a rhythm gymnastics background? I’m also wondering if there are certain rules in different countries regarding pole dance competitions. And that leads me to wonder if pole dancing becomes an Olympic event, will it be scrubbed squeaky clean for a G-rated audience so all can see it? I think that was the controversy to begin with. While we all want to see pole dancing recognized for it’s beauty and incredible strength, if it is admitted to the Olympics, it might change the unique quality of an art that balances on the edge of acrobatics, fluidity and delightful nastiness and sensuality. Just a thought. What do you guys think?

OH, OH, OH, OH, NOOOOOO! I’m so sorry if I was misunderstood or came off sounding snotty!

First off, I haven’t posted yet because I’m scared and I don’t think I’m good enough. I’ve been trying to get over it and hopefully I will very soon.

Second, I so admire everyone’s work here! From girls who are dancing for the first time to professional and teachers. EVERYONE is so talented.

Which leads me to Third, I think that there are many girls here (NOT me, obviously), who are as, or even more, spectacular than Miss Pole Dance Belgium, although I found those moves extraordinarily unique. I could name names (cough*Veena**Fleur*, etc), but I won’t…

Fleur is right: I only meant that the combination of certain moves were very original and eye-catching.

So I’m sorry if I offended anyone, I really meant the exact opposite!

OMG, I was soooooo disappointed in Mia Michaels when she told one of the Top 20 dancers that he "annoyed the sh$%" out of her. It was so unprofessional and I seriously couldn’t believe she’d be so rude https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_ncool.gif. I don’t get offended easily, but her outright meanness really bothered me.

I KNOW!!!! I couldn’t believe it. And frankly, I don’t understand what she meant when she said that she couldn’t stand what he brought to the stage. Does anyone know what she’s talking about?

I felt so bad at the end when they had to decide between the 2 brothers! I swear I almost cried. I was really hoping they’d make an exception and have 21 dancers. And it’s true: it was the older brother’s choreography that a) totally aced the younger brother’s audition, and b) got his "nerd" group through that round of cuts. He’s really talented at storytelling, which is soooo lacking in some dance. And I cried when they told the ballet dancer from Miami City Ballet that Eddie Villela wouldn’t let him out of his contract. He was incredible. I’m surprised that they didn’t cut the fun guy from NY, but he’s got so much potential (but no technique) and a ton of personality. As much as they rake Kaitlin (the older sister) over the coals, she’s gorgeous to watch. If she can take some more risks, she’s got a real shot. So everybody, who’s your favorite?

My father-in-law swears by fish oil supplements for lowering triglyceride levels. They really are amazing. And if you can live without it, try cutting out dairy from your diet. By the way, I just want to double check on something: did you fast for 12 hours before taking the 2nd test?

    Good luck. Keep us posted.

Veena, I am getting in touch with my friend in NY who is studying to become an acupuncturist/Chinese Medicine Doctor. I’m hoping that she might be able to refer you to someone or at least can point you to a reputable institution (school for Chinese Medicine) in the San Francisco area. I’ll let you know as soon as I find anything out.

I agree with getting a second opinion. It just doesn’t sound like "nothing", although we all hope it’s something minor. Also remember that often injuries are due to imbalances somewhere else in the body, or it could be something in connection to the spine. I’m not sure of your beliefs, but have you thought of seeing and acupuncturist?

Sending you lots of healing thoughts.

I can’t wait til tonight, either! I loved Natalie, too, and was so sad when she got the boot. She really is a beautiful dancer with awesome technique. But they were right in a way: it’s a competition show and EVERYTHING is being watched and during her group’s audition, she was kinda of "flat". When she was demonstrating, she really hit it and performed brilliantly. Maybe it was the energy of the choreographer because it was soooo obvious that she LOVED Natalie, which maybe gave Natalie more confidence? I was also sad to see the Japanese guy get let go. That guy has a ton of heart. And those brothers?! Aren’t they the greatest? The older one is such a talented choreographer. I hope they recognize that. They’re so cute. It also looks like the older of the blonde sisters is close to the chopping block. I think she’s incredible but she couldn’t get the choreography. In her defense, though, I took some classes with Mia in NY a million years ago (way before she was well known) and her stuff is HARD! It’s super expressive and at that point, totally unique. I remember not being able to count it out at all, and being lost every single time we turned, which was every other second. Oh, I’m so glad to be able to talk about this to you guys–my husband despises the show but he’s out of town this week!

Oh my God! Oh, RaRa, what a stressful situation! I’m so glad she’s ok today. Did the doctor mention if she was allergic to a specific spider toxin, or that she might be allergic to all spider bites? I noticed that you’re in NJ–what the heck kind of spiders do you have over there?! I’m in the desert and I’m ALWAYS on the lookout for Black Widows, but I wouldn’t think of NJ as having dangerous spiders.

Awww, it’s truly my pleasure to help. Honestly, I’m only passing on the information I’ve been blessed by receiving from my awesome teacher and the amazing opportunity of taking Jamilla’s workshop!

Now I am building up the abdominal strength to go into a midpole/aerial invert. It’s reverse crunch time…

Lying on the floor to begin with, if you can. Basically it’s a reverse abdominal crunch just trying to get your hips and sacrum off the floor. And that could be your warm-up. I don’t think you can actually go anywhere with this (because you’re so low to the ground the back of your head is already on the floor) but it does teach you to wrap your legs immediately. If you’re in a squat position, you may subconsciously push your feet into the ground to get your hips up overhead. Which will be fine once you locate which abs you’re using to start off with. I’m not sure if I’m explaining it correctly but I hope it helps.

If you’ve got the patience, I promise you will be well rewarded by learning to invert from the floor! You will build enormous amounts of strength in all parts of your body. You will not rely on momentum, but rather core strength. It’s so hard but well worth the practice. Start with your bum on the ground, then invert from a squat position, and then when you finally invert from standing, you’ll be laughing at how easy it is. Actually, I would recommend everyone who is already inverting to try it from the ground for a week!

And to start you off totally right, remember to try it on both sides. Of course 1 side will seem easier and naturally you will want to practice it more on that side, but do yourself a favor from the beginning and make yourself do it equal amount of times on both. I only learned on 1 side and have been struggling with the transition from chopper to inverted crucifix on my weaker side, whereas I never even think about it on my stronger side. For some reason, my legs get very confused when I switch sides and refuse to cooperate.

    Good luck!

Clarita, what a nice video! You’ve got such a fluid style and grace. I really liked your chain of pirouttes–very enviable! If you don’t mind a suggestion: you may want to get your hips closer to the pole on your fan legs. The first one you did I was worried that you might hurt yourself. But on the second you were tight to the pole and I cheered out loud! Can’t wait to see more. By the way, what song was it? I really like it a lot.

I’m not sure how it is in the UK, but here in the States, our capitalist society actually encourages entrepreneurialism! But I do think that it’s necessary to have insurance and a plan of action. You’ll want to take into account the physical needs of your clientele and how to warm them up properly, and how to take them safely through the progression of spins, transitions, strength training, floor work, climbs, and inverts. Many beginners learn quickly, but I think that an aware teacher should go slowly to keep newbies from getting hurt. It’s not an easy balance: you’ve got to throw them something that they can "get" so they feel successful (group exercise mentality) and keep them coming back, but also keep them grounded (mentally and figuratively) with strengthening before going on to harder moves. The studio I go to won’t teach inverts until Level 3 and I know of another nationally recognized system who won’t allow the student to invert unless their teacher gives them permission and is present to help at all times. Having said that, I think you’d be a great instructor and have got a lot of knowledge of the anatomy and kinesiology. Plus you’re a fabulous dancer. Good luck and keep us posted!

I made a post about the recent PoleaPalooza and I think it’s under the heading "Events" or "Competitions".

While I didn’t think of it like a joke, I totally agree with Keilloces on many of her points. The security was kind of tight but they didn’t bother the tables much–they did ask my friend to stop filming but didn’t threaten to take her camera away. And the wait was awful, but I was prepared for that. There were 18 girls competing so that’s probably why they kept the routines down to 1 minute or so. I was also prepared for the wait in between the rounds so that didn’t bother me so much. Overall, I was generally impressed with the skills. Even with the poor girl who fell off the pole. I also had met 1 of the competitors and saw her practicing several weeks prior to the event and some of the girls were affiliated with the studio where I take class, so I had a pretty good time. Maybe the caliber of dancing has changed because they lowered the prize money–I think last year it was something crazy like $10,000 and this time it was $7000??? Not sure about that. I had fun, despite the smoke. I would definitely go back.
