MemberOctober 12, 2010 at 5:56 pm in reply to: Competitions – complaints, good stuff, thoughtsI still think one of the major issues really is…are we looking at it as a sport or is it a dance/showcase or even pageant type of competition. If it is a sport comp then yes – by all means it should be treated just like Gymnastics or Skating etc…it’s when you get into more of the dance or pageantry elements that judging becomes much more subjective and if the judging policies are not transparent things can get or at least seem messy. I think we saw some of this during Pole Superstar in NYC when Barbara Dial won…some people were mad/confused…personally I think she did a wonderful job and we should support all forms of pole dancing in every form and every dancer. Was she the best "trickster" maybe not. Did her dance resonate with the judges…seems like it did.
Blech it’s tricky – I am glad I am not a judge LOL https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Dance is such a tricky medium to judge. Everyone has moves that they like and don’t. Some of us like a more *dancy* performance…others like a more trick based style – so judging strictly on personal opinions or preferences – whether perceived or not, will always come into question. And while I am not a huge fan of the whole *pole in the Olympics wave* I do think that if there are going to be so many high level competitions it might be nice for there to be a set amount of items/tricks/components etc that make up the judging process, much along the lines of gymnastics. Points for hitting certain items: strength moves, spins, flexibility, dance…etc. Artistic flair should most definitely factor into it as well – but if there was some sort of standard it might alleviate some of the questions everyone has.
But honestly who knows LOL maybe there was some sort of judging procedures/guidelines that I am just completely unaware of https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I am always tickled when this question comes up because the answer – at least in my mind is YES there is big difference when one loses weight or rather mass, and as a non skinny woman it drives me kinda nuts when people dance around it https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Not that any weight/mass loss will improve your flow, style or dancing abilities – but honestly yes certain moves just do become easier and I always feel like people don’t want to admit it. Which is not to say that larger women cannot pole well. It’s really more about your strength and muscles…there are plenty of smaller women who do not have much muscle mass and that is difficult too. I was always very strong and could eventually get most moves I really put my mind and time to – however when I lost 20 pounds (which for me being petite was a huge amount) moves that I worked on for years all of a sudden became much much easier.

also what would be cool is if you could build your list or box check type pole tricks/spins that you are currently working on and then be able to mark them off. Also/or some personal type of pratice organizer/planner daily/bi weekly. Something to keep track of progress and be organized with your plans.
great idea!

Where did you buy your poles? It’s funny I have been to studio’s that used PS, Lil Mynx and X…everyone has their preference but it seems that all of the poles at the studio do better when they are permanent poles vs removable or multi piece…

Hello…I will be at CPDC hope to see you there!

Next time I am there I will have my friend take some pics LOL we meant to last time but there were only 2 of us in class and by the time we remembered our camera neither of us could barely lift our arms LOL https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
I really like it there – the teachers are very helpful and extremely patient – which is a plus. They break down each move well. I have not been to Kinetic but have heard good things about it…I DID however go to Hollywood Aerial Arts a while back and honestly it is amazing that I ever tried tissu again………..it was a truly YUCKY experience https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_puke_r.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_puke_l.gif …i.e. if I ALREADY knew what I was doing I would not be taking a beginners class so I really don’t need you to YELL at me WTF- really annoying, rude, evil, male instructor – such a turn off

The 1st is a double foot lock split (or at least that’s how I know it)
The second in purple looks like a crucifix knee hook (or at least that’s how I know it)
and the 3rd – that looks like the CKR in pole…can’t remember the name for it probably because I hate doing it in pole…and avoid it in silks LOL -
