My pole fell tonight as I was in a twisted ballerina spin! Very painful, but kinda funny… I was wrapped around the pole so tight, and spinning so fast, I couldn’t comprehend what was happening, then could not unravel myself (when I figured out I was falling). The pole landed on top of me 🙁

Are you still selling your pole?

This is puzzled me for a long time. I’ve always wondered if I was doing something wrong or if I was not properly engaging right muscles. I went to a pole instructor who told me to pretend that I was trying to get into the tightest fitting pair jeans that I had, and so making that squeeze would be engaging my core.
We do an exercise on the floor where knees are bent our feet are close to our butt, and we focus on lifting our butts off of the floor, with very little momentum, or pushing off of the floor with our hands. We also do lots of core work with medicine balls, and negatives.
I’ve noticed that I have a lot more control and much smoother in inverts since doing this.

…looks like I’ll be needing to loosen mine, too. It does the exact same thing, and makes an almost “knocking” noise when spinning.

Really? I was just about to download the app on my iPad. Good to know that I could just use FaceTime too! Good idea! Thank you!

Great tips. I am more curios about incoroprating creatine… Anyone see any changes in their bodies using creatine? If so, what did you notice?
I’ve been using amino for my muscle recovery (and to help the pain), also I’ve been using a protein shake from BSN after workouts. Sometimes I use it as a MRP.

How about some of the tracks from Brittney’s album. I play Gasoline, and Big Fat Bass in my warmups.

I think developing more strength has become my biggest sucess. With that I have been able to conquer some of the moves on my goal list (one being the chopper hold). I’ve also worked on my side climb… Definitenly not a favorite of mine, but a necessary for so much! I’m also pretty proud of my CAR! Happy poling, everyone!!

I’d say to play. Make sure your body is all warmed up, and you are comfy. Take a second to think about what made you consider pole (in the first place). Was it grace? Strength? When we’re you at your happiest point in pole? What music was playing? What was going on in your life at that moment? How were you feeling about yourself? Surely, some of these feelings attribute to your desire to pole. If you miss it, get back to it?
Hope you come out of your rut.

Planks, and pull ups. Doing different variations of planks (single handed, opposite arms/legs held straingt out…) and just holding the positions longer all add strength. Downward dog (regiular, and also with single leg extensions). Plus you can do these at home.
We do negative push-ups in class (and those are killes). You start in a plank position, then sloooowwlllyy lower yourself down. When I started those, I'd fall on my face, and I couldn't do a single push up… Now I can do a couple of REAL push-ups (no knees), and hold myself on the pole longer. Good luck!

I know that since practicing pole, I have had a lot of "AHA" moments. The one that stands out to me the most, and keeps me motivated is the reality that the more I do it, the better I get, and the more fit I become. Every time I work past something that I would normally place (mental) blocks that would keep me from progressing, I become more confident, and happier with myself as a whole. When I first started to see myself as "better" or "improved", I believed that I was going to compete. I attended the competitions, and could name the performers before they touched the pole. I still go to the competitions, and watch countless hours of YouTube, and Veena vids because they inspire me to continue. However, I now have a better sense of reality…
See, I work full time. I don't have the time I desire to be a gym rat, and my work schedule is so unpredictable, and restraining, that I can not even commit to taking classes more than 1 day during the week. That one day, I am usually working early… then I head to the studio, and may take anywhere from 2-3 hours of pole, and a Zumba class. I have no intention to over-exert myself- I simply enjoy it! What I don't get in class, I highlight in my journal, and add it to my "homework" list, for home training.
I am also married. My hubby and I go to the gym together. It's kinda "our thing". So, there goes more time and energy. And lets not forget anyone: I am raising my kid brother. Who is also athletic (he play baseball for 2 teams), so I have to make time for him, and his games. Lets just say, the friends I have LOVE me. I have committed to spending some time with them, and a text is sometimes all I have time to give- But they stick around.
All of that was to be said that my Pro Career is limited. LOL!!
So my long term goals are to be healthy. I want to move beautifully, and inspire fellow polers. I want to walk into a room, and for people to wonder: "What the hell does she do? She looks terrific?!?". I think about teaching pole, and to never stop learning. I want to be a 70 y/o hot home poler. Sound crazy??

You will get there if you stick to it. I am always mesmerized by videos, and my instructors when they demo what we will be learning in class that day. Sometimes I get it, and other times- I don't. It is really hard for me not to beat myself up in the moment, but I just remind myself, that everything comes with practice. I literally tell myself "Homework", log it in my journal, and practice it during the week. I've also come to the reality that I may not be able to do everything (right now), and there are tons of other things that I do very well!
The other thing to remember is to have fun. Getting to the pole is the most fun, and having a warmed up body will allow you a much better, and prettier dance flow. And if you practice the strengthening exercises regularly, you'll reach your goals much quicker! Keep us posted, and be patient.

I love it! Tigertail- you’re crazy!! Lol! I’ve been learning some booty moves in class, maybe I’ll participate in this one.

I'd like to see a couple of different stretches for splits (maybe a separate splits training section).
Elbow spin
Sad girl drop
pretty and spinning descends
slink downs
different climbs (show, side, "X" of "V" climbs)
spin-ups (from floor)
Flip-ups (from floor): Seen below @ 1:17

Hey,
I just did a blog on working on more of a controlled inverts, and believe that some of the advised exercises could benefit you, too. We are basically targeting the same muscle groups. I take classes with a great teacher, that focuses on strength training, and we do lots of the same exercises the ladies recommended + standing leg lifts (those kick my ass!).
Here is a link to my blog:

Be patient, and stick to it…
Hope it helps!

@ Yogabeachbabe- Hahahaha! Me too!! I’m soooo badass (in my head). I’m not big on religion, but do believe in the power of intention, an the laws of attraction- So I am sure that I CAN and WILL be as good, in time.
I watch people put together routines, and have always wondered about this. I’m guessing that working on small combonations, then combining them would br the best way.

I’ve been tring to do it from the floor, and from a pole climb, but it seems that I can’t move my junk around!! At least I’ve stopped nailing my bust.
The other move I’m having trouble with is the spinning (back) descend from a climb. I feel like I’m crushing and rolling over my right arm, and have trouble swinging my leg around for momentum.
….and oh yes, slinking down from a pole sit. Grrrrr. But I’ll never give up on any of it!! You guys shouldn’t either!

MemberMay 17, 2011 at 1:17 am in reply to: First inversion (w/ a crash mat =P)…anyone scared to invert like me??I think everyone has that initial fear of falling in the beginning. Ive just begun inversions, and did not use a yoga mat or crash pad. I will add that my instructor was really big on teaching us how to grip, and different ways to descend prior to actually inverting.
I’ve also noticed that she had us focus on strength, and leg grip, before it was even presented to us. I’m sure that’s why we all were so confident attempting the move.

We began inverting on my class about two weeks ago. I inverted on both sides in class, with some help from mu instructor, but when I came home, I couldn’t do it.
When I returned to class, I admitted to her that I wasn’t sure if I was engaging my core properly. I also began doing mandatory crunches and invert drills whenever I could find the time (and holding my core/abs tight as much as I can remember).
A couple of nights ago, I inverted properly about three times on my right side. As of tonight, I can invert properly on the right side a lot easier. However, it is still difficult for me to do I on my left. I think it’s a mind thing, though.
I share your excitement, and I am super encouraged by my (and all of your) progress. I’m also really happy to have an instructor that teaches proper form, and strength training prior to showing us the moves.

Cheers to you!!
I am having such a problem getting the cradle. I can't seem to get the pole lower in my midsection/seat area, or hold the moves for several revolutions. I keep bruising my thigh. What worked for you?
