I’m not sure how you practice, but how often do you freestyle through several songs in a row? One thing I’ve noticed that a lot of pole dancers struggle with at first – myself included – is dancing straight through for a long time without stopping to think about what trick they should do or what transition or move could I work on here or there? One thing that helped my fluidity and flow a lot was being forced to just keep going. Even if you end up repeating the same stuff over and over again, just keep moving without pausing to think about it – as though you’re in front of an rapt audience and can’t stop in front of them. I think it eventually makes you more graceful-looking just by virtue of the fact that you bust the habit of stilted movements from hesitation.

I am looking to sell my x-pole soon. I'm down in Bloomington. It's a 45mm chrome static/spinning, 2 years old, lightly used. I still have the x-pole bag, tools, and mini instructional DVD it came with. The only problem is that I usually keep it up all the time and the middle joints tend to stick… I got them apart once, but it was with the help of a very strong guy friend and I may or may not be able to do it again with the help of a weaker, female friend https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif I did just move it to a new apartment and was able to transport it in my car by taking the dome and bottom stand off and reclining the front seat… but, yeah, just so you know. I was looking to sell it for $200, and I actually go up to Indy at least once a week, so I can bring it to you rather than ship. Let me know if you're interested!

If your only reason for wanting to strip is to be on the pole, don't bother. The majority of your night will be spent on the floor, trying to convince customers to buy lapdances. And, unless you can find a bikini club in your area, you will have to be at least topless with just pasties covering your nipples and there will be some contact in the dances. And bikini bar workers generally don't make too much anyway. You'll only be on the pole about 1/8 of the night. I don't even turn tricks on our poles at the club because they are always nasty and greasy and it doesn't really increase stage tips anyway… Stripping is way more than dancing on a pole – it's mostly about sales and interacting with customers who will drain the life out of you every night. If you're shy and only want to dance – not grind half-naked/fully naked on random idiots, then try to find someplace else to do your dancing. The rigors of stripping aren't worth it just for a few songs a night on stage.

How do they do it over there?

I started working at a club about 2 months ago, and I can say it isn't what I expected, especially in terms of dancing. I really don't do anything but the most basic of dance moves while on stage. This is mostly because the poles at the club where I work are not real dance poles – they're 3 times thicker than a real dance pole and almost impossible to grip. You have to rework hand and body placement to do any tricks. Some girls have basic inverts and the Hangback going but for the most part, even the most talented girls say they can't do as much on these poles because they're too big https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif Honestly, even if they weren't, I often get so tired at work that I don't have the motivation to do anything that fancy. I occasionally throw in a Teddy, but that's about it. I guess my overall point about the dancing is that, for me at least (I don't know what other people find is true for them), but working at a club really doesn't allow me to "pole dance" the way I would at home. Both because I'm tired and also because I feel like a lot of "pretty" moves don't translate well to a club setting. I don't rely on the club at all to hone or show off my pole skills. In fact, I've been frustrated lately that work tires me out so much that I haven't had time to practice real pole dancing at home. This is just my take on it – other girls, especially ones who are better at tricks, could find this much different.
As far as what people think of me – I've gotten tons of positive feedback from friends. And, outside of that, I really don't care what people I don't know think about it or me. But the few new people I've met (outside the club) that find out tend to get really excited and go "omg that's so cool! I've never met anyone that's done that before!"
If you're nervous about going on stage or giving lapdances to random guys, I think the only thing I can say about it is – it's a completely different context when you're actually doing it. If you've never done it before, it can seem almost impossible to imagine being ok with it. But the second I got on stage the first time and it was time to take my top off, it was just like "ok, well, it's a strip club – this is my job, so who cares?" As far as lapdances are concerned – I hate giving them lol It's not in any way sensual for me as the dancer – in fact, it's tiring as hell. (Of course, if a customer ever asks, you act like you've never been more turned on… haha) I can't really explain it well – it's one of those things you can only really "get" once you've started to experience it. It's nervewracking and feels like 'omg, I could never do that!' when you're first getting going, but it very quickly turns into 'this is just my job.'
If you're unsure but want to try it out, the good thing is that most clubs don't put you on a definitive schedule right away anyway (since clubs have such high turnover), so if you try it once or a couple days and absolutely hate it, just leave and don't go back.

MemberJanuary 8, 2011 at 9:19 pm in reply to: Does pole size make that drastic of a difference? And, in the case of the Teddy, it is grip that I have problems with. However, in my open V, my grip is fine… I just can't keep myself in position long enough to tilt back all the way. But when I was with her, I could go all the way back and hold it long enough to slide to the floor. I was shocked! I thought maybe that the few weeks I was home without my pole, and just strength training, that I had suddenly gotten so much stronger and wouldn't have a problem anymore! But just a few days later, back on my pole, I'm right back where I was… .argh!

The only other difference, now that you mention it, is that she has a Platinum Stages pole while mine is an X-pole. I've never looked at Platinum Stages, so I have no idea what they're made of. I know mine is chrome…

glitterhips – That would be awesome! I really appreciate it! And I think everyone would also be exicted about a stage makeup tutorial (I know I would lol) I am so sorry to hear about your foot though https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif I hope you feel better soon!
zsah27 – Thanks so much for sharing that link! It was really helpful!
Trena – That is good advice. I suck at mascara anyway, so I would probably mess everything up the second I tried to put it on, so your advice for blending real lashes with fake ones is super!
Thanks everyone, for your posts! I'm loving the feedback!

Merry Christmas! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_santa.gif I just recently started hooping too! I’ve been using SaFire’s online classes on Hoop City. It’s almost like taking lessons off StudioVeena! Except you pay a little more ($55 per series) for a lesson series that you then have access to forever. There are also forums and photos and videos, and your own personal space to chronicle your hoop adventures. Hoop City is basically the StudioVeena of hooping! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif SaFire is a great teacher and her videos have been fun and very clear. You can even ask questions that she will answer personally if you’re having trouble. It’s at http://www.hoopcity.ca" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Have fun! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_compress.gif

I just watched a video today of Rima Fakih talking about the incident, and she made it clear that it was not a "stripper" pole contest and it was about bringing women together and teaching them how to dance and be sexy and feel confident. She also stated, "I didn’t do anything wrong." I think it’s great that she defended herself by bringing forth the empowerment aspect that pole dancing is about, and by asserting that she did nothing wrong instead of cowering and apologizing for some "horrible mistake" in her past like I’m sure some people would have wanted her to do. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_tongue.gif

omg, what got me the most were the comments of people agreeing with him! One of the most recent – anyone bloke who thinks that pole dancing is empowering for women is a complete dimwit and any woman who shares that view is also, along with not understanding sexism….. are you kidding me? GOD I hate ignorant a**holes!

My main problem with grip during a dance isn’t necessarily my hands being sweaty but the pole getting slick. Even if I do some floor work and my hands are fine, the second I get up and try to spin on the pole, my pole is still slippery and I can’t do anything without wiping it down. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif It’s really frustrating me because I’m in the middle of trying to put together a routine but halfway through I need to do a carousel spin and I don’t have the friction when I need it. I just end up falling. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_evil.gif How do you manage to wipe down the pole in the middle of a dance without making it really obvious?
