I always cramp in my calves when doing a leg move the first time. It happened with basic invert, aerial invert, caterpillar, and shoulder mount so far. It only was once each leg that tried the trick, and it worked itself out within the hour. But if it continues to bother you I’d seek out a professional opinion. Maybe a good massage will help? Good luck and super congrats on your first invert!!! 🙂

Haha Pheniox, you sound like me! My mind is constantly on pole related things. My hubs is soooo pole bored now it’s ridiculous. Thankfully he thinks Veena is adorable and Cleo is always rocking his fave tunes, so he still hangs so far!
I only practice 3 days a week (and I’ve only just bumped it from 2 here in July) at about 2 hours per session. I want to have shorter practice but I can’t fit all I need to do in under that. Warmup, pole, condition, stretch. And then there’s sets of skills to work on within that; flexibility, strength, dance flow, floor work, ‘stands and balancing work. It gets overwhelming trying to remember everything so I’ve started dedicating months to a skill. First I practiced climbs and inverts for pole and flexibility training in June (my inverts and climbs are massively improved! TY Veena for that idea!) and then focused on floor work for July and I’m doing dance flow this month, etc. handstands and such need to be practiced daily though so I always do a few every chance I get.
I’ve been working on building up to more days but I don’t like working sore or painful muscles. I havent hurt myself so far (even though twice I’ve thought a particularly stubbornly sore muscle was injured) so I feel comfortable with my schedule as it is now. -
Yes! Even if you decide to learn at a studio Veena’s lessons will come in handy. And in all honesty, I have bought a few pole related DVDs recently and scoured the internet for all sorts of pole, strengthening, and stretching exercises and none have really shown me anything not already available to me on this site. Believe me, this is an excellent place to start in the world of pole, and the quality of instruction for the money spent is insane! Plus the community here is so supportive and active, any questions will be answered quickly and with respect. I’m a fan. 🙂

Late to the party, but I found some interesting info after reading through this thread, trying to ascertain whether I’ve pulled something or not. This site even has a pdf checklist for hamstring rehab.

I was doing splits training and during the right split stretch I felt (no sound) a tiny twinge around the back of my knee. I instantly quit the stretch. Afterwards, it felt kinda sore and jelly like (as usual after a good flex training sesh). Next 3 days I rested, during which it only feels slightly sore when used. 4th day I did some light stretches and it’s still sitting in slightly sore territory. I’ve been foam rolling and can’t really find pain anywhere, just a mild soreness that doesn’t go away. Ugh. I feel like I was plenty warmed up, I only stretch after a workout and my pole room is super hot, so I guess I just pushed a little too hard that time. There is too fine a line between pushing hard enough and not enough!

I’m on a chrome and have had no issues so far. My hands aren’t glued in place, I can still move around the pole fairly well, therefore I don’t *think* it could pull or scrape enough to take off the finish. Maybe someone with another finish/experience can chime in?

Right. I should add that I use them on a spinning pole. Have not tried them on static yet. And true, after the last two practices, where I used them almost the whole time, my callouses are already starting to peel off. Depends on your point of view if that’s a good thing or bad thing. 🙂 Curious, did you try to wipe the tack with alcohol? I noticed that the tack would become slightly slippery after a bit but a quick rub on the pole cloth cleans them up and they are back to tacky for my situation.

I also check out YT and various places on the internet, but I find that SV is the best place for pole dancing instruction, support, encouragement, community, and help there is available. Like previously stated Veena’s lessons, a crash mat, and a video device are all you really need to get your foundation started correctly and become the dancer you’ve dreamed about. Good luck on your journey!

I’m interested in exits out of Superman too…are there any nice ones besides shoulder mounting out? I still haven’t accomplished the side V to superman yet, only from the floor so far, but once I do get it I don’t want to just drop to the floor. Though I’m betting that will happen a number of times regardless! 🙂

Congrats!! I’m proud of you! Fear is a big monster to get passed and you did it!

I’m trying to not use split grip too much so this should be an interesting discussion. I know that you can use the regular pole hold grip for a tuck spin, and it’s very pretty that way, too.

I personally love the basics like pull-ups, planks, push ups, and hip thrusts/bridges, etc. I spend off pole time doing these exercises, yoga classes, ‘stands practice, and if you have lessons, SV’s conditioning exercises here.

That guy needs to try the pole! 😀 Awesome strength. I love how the girl on the phone just veers around him, like, oh cool some dude hanging off a couple bars, no big, I see that all the time. yea.

For some reason the nipples heal quickly. Unless mine were toughened up from breast feeding my son… Anyway, I’ll be feeling the same as I continue my sleeve, my next piece will definitely have me off the pole for a few weeks. I plan on doing yoga and off the pole work as much as I’m able. You could also spend the week just dancing and spinning, that will keep your strength up. Sometimes time off is good for the body anyway. 🙂

I just bought a Mika set, a basic shorts and top, and it was a bit pricy, but I’m really impressed with the quality and how fast and inexpensive the shipping is. I ordered it and within 2 hours I received an email telling me it had shipped out…what! Never had device like that before. Bad Kitty is cheaper, but they never have any colors in the styles I want and no wait list to get on. So you gotta check every day. Ugh. Now, most of my “pole” outfits are from target. I buy any cute sports bra and black boyshort panties and they’ve served me well, look fine, are comfy, and super affordable. 🙂

Orlando is beautiful and tons of fun! I’d happily host a pole jam any time anyone visits. 🙂 my timezone is eastern – gmt-4:00.

Haha! Great idea, Allyson! I wish I was in NJ so we could get mani/pedis and talk pole! I bet one of those girls will fall in love, just like we did. Fingers crossed for you! 😉

LOL! That post is weird.
Well, Kristina, I know exactly what you’re talking about because I’ve been feeling that way too. I was just talking to my hubby about how I wonder if I have to go to a studio to progress like what I see here and on yt of other polers. I was feeling so behind and somewhat lost as to what to work on. But then he, and my research on the internet, told me I am progressing fine, I am learning everyday, and I shouldn’t feel like I need to BE anywhere because poling is a journey. And I really get that. It’s the fun of learning and practicing that is the real reward. If I only cared about the end result, well, that would be sad because that would mean, the end. I dont want to ever get to that point. Annnnnd, I went off track. But I totally get what you’re saying. I would LOVE to have pole friends that could come by and we could pole, talk pole, and watch pole vids, etc. My husband is so bored of it by now. I know that if I go to a studio, that is more of a possibility, but I just can’t afford that at this moment in time. Maybe one day. But for now, I’m a SV’er through and through.

@chem– Oh, then I definitely should think about other options. Thank you!

I don’t, but I am positive someone here will be able to point you in the right direction. I’m thinking my next pole will be powder coated. Good luck!

Home poles seem to be very picky about temperature and humidity. I have found sometimes my chrome pole will literally sweat (from humidity), making it IMPOSSIBLE to do anything at all and other times I’m stuck to the thing like glue and I’m unable to spin, or slide on it. I steam cleaned mine recently and I think it helped quite a bit, but weather will always have a huge impact on mine because it isn’t in a temp controlled location. I would suggest steaming it every once in a while and using grip aids. I personally haven’t found the “cure all” for slippery poles, but keeping the temp and humidity levels where ever your pole likes them to be helps tremendously.

LOL, CrazyKosters! I’d like to hear those stories one day! I’d rather say to not mix pole with anything except water, music, and heels, because I love mixing alcohol with karaoke and general silly dancing. I guess my biggest concern is, now that I have learned not to pole and drink…except the occasional Loki spin to freak out my buddies…Can I impart that knowledge on my friends who come over? Thankfully, I haven’t had any problems in the 4 months I’ve had it, everyone I know seems to have a healthy dose of fear when it comes to my baby. 😉

I’m not a studio owner or anything, but this is a topic I’ve been mulling over for a few months now. My pole is smack dab in the middle of our home bar. At first, it never crossed my mind that it could be a bad idea. Then one night, when I first got it, I was having a few cocktails and was really excited about something I had learned the day before. The damn pole was practically calling my name, all sweet and soft (as I imagine her voice to be ;)), and I did one quick spin, coming down on the side of my foot. Ouch. Nothing major but if you feel hurt while drinking, well, that must mean serious pain tomorrow, right? Well, it wasn’t that bad, just an ugly bruise, and I’m pretty used to those, but I did vow that I would learn from that experience. Alcohol makes muscles all loosey goosey and top that off with liquid courage…It’s scary. Last thing I need to combine with pole is relaxed muscles and the asinine idea that I can do anything!

HAhahaha! That’s great!
