That’s was really cool. I saw it live, and I remember thinking, how cute is that outfit with that song! Great performance!

As a beginner I would do the days lessons only. I believe around day 15 you start doing pole tricks, but the strength training and beginner transition moves are an important step towards getting on the pole. Veena has her whole website set up pretty perfect, I’m always amazed at how well it’s done. Welcome!

I have a similar story as you. I started poling seriously/for fitness about a year ago, while I was at my heaviest I’d ever been, including pregnant! I have lost 35 pounds just by dancing 2-3 times a week. I start with a quick dancers warm up, then a strength routine, then I work on a move or two in a few freestyle dances, then I stretch everything out. I have gained a lot of muscle during my weight loss, which makes every pound lost look even more amazing! Dancing is great cardio and lots of fun!

Hardwood, laminate wood, and vinyl composition tile (VCT), would all be excellent dance surfaces. You could also do parquet tiles, which are wood tiles. Carpet is hard with heels and ceramic or porcelain tile is a bit hard on the knees but would work fine otherwise.

I’d keep an eye out on craigslist or similar for a used x-pole. I saw one recently go for $100, but it was snapped up lightening fast. Usually I see about $200-250, which is still a deal, especially if you don’t have to pay for shipping the massive thing. I had a mipole and a male friend played on it one time and broke it…save yourself the extra cost and go for a reputable brand pole right off the bat, bc you’ll be buying one anyway, if you decide this is the sport for you. Have fun hunting!:)

This happens with me, too. I feel stronger when I’m out poling, vs at home. I was attributing it to when I go out there is central air conditioning, which I lack in my garage based pole room, but my husband says it’s probably more of an adrenaline thing. Like, there’s other people around watching and I don’t want to “fail” in front of them so I push harder than when I’m chillin and playing at home. I’m sorry I have no tips to help, but you aren’t alone, if that helps any! 🙂

I’ve been on vacation and I told myself I’d start with the 30 day takeoff when I came back. I wanted to do the ab challenge with you all last month but life got in the way, so now I’ll try to do both! Thanks Tropicalpole!

Oh yes!! You’re not alone! I have days where everything I try works out and then there are days when every attempt is thwarted by something or another (generally sweat, ugh, or tired muscles)! It’s just the way it works. I usually just accept what I can’t change and come back to it the next day. You will overcome whatever it is keeping you down this session, don’t worry!

Not much on it but @heartofthescorpion

I love that this one has purple and orange, too. It’s a ton of effect for one little light, right? I love mine, but again, wish I’d gotten the purple!

Welcome and good luck! You won’t need the luck, just perseverance and drive, but I’ll say it anyway! 🙂 Happy poling!!

I think it depends on what you want your pole dancing to be like. Are you all about the strength? Then work on push ups, planks, chin ups, rows, full sit ups, or Pilates; you don’t need a pole at all. If you’re all about sexy flexiness, work on yoga or Cleo’s rocking legs n abs. No pole necessary. Maybe you want to learn good texhnique right off the bat? I’d say try out some ballet barre workouts. Great for learning turnout and proper form. No need for a pole or barre, usually a chair will do. 🙂 hope there are plenty of ideas for you to get started!

I actually think using the gloves to learn moves can be beneficial. You learn contact points and the balance of the move with a lessened fear factor. Then as you feel secure, you can try without them. Strength happens with consistency. My personal opinion, of course. 🙂

I wear 6 inch clear Ellie’s right now, and I love them. I’ve only been poling about 9 months so maybe as I get better, I may go higher. I just bought another 6 inch pair by The Highest Heel and I can’t wait to feel them!! My Ellie’s are pretty comfortable, they have a bit of padding on the sole. I’ve never had Pleaser’s so I have no idea about those.

I’m getting the pink UV ones! They were my third fave, though. I adore the kissable 71, the maryjane styled ones, but those wouldn’t tell me anything about the foot bed and it’s functionality. And then the diamond drilled ones are simply gorgeous, but I wanted to get a more affordable pair for my first ones, just in case.

Haha, Shoog! I’m with you on this whole shoe addiction thing! Thanks to AG’s blog post I am getting a pair, too. I’m hoping the padding at the toe bed will give my piggies something to hold on to so they aren’t sliding out as much. And thank you, Shoog, for telling us about this brand I had never heard of! 🙂

Flooring types that would be good for dancing on would be hardwood, laminate wood, and VCT. You can build a “stage” out of any of these options to put under/around your pole, but have you considered polishing and sealing your concrete floor? With the right products it can become smooth as glass and wouldn’t affect the functionality of the garage for future use. Obviously, any decisions would depend on your housing situation and the permanence of your needs.

MemberAugust 10, 2014 at 9:35 pm in reply to: What’s your flexibility nemesis? Share hints and tips!Oh yea! I read that entire thread when it was recently revived and also found the videos. The methods shown are interesting and easy to understand, but I do wish I had a partner to stretch with anyway. Some of the resistance became tiresome on my arms before the intended muscle! These stretches did help release the tension I recently had in my hamstring after an over zealous split attempt. Also learning about squaring the hips was probably the biggest mind opener and heart breaker. My splits weren’t near as close but I felt the stretch so much better in the hip flexors and hamstrings.

My pole is in my garage. While it’s nice having a semi dedicated space, I’m jealous of those with room for it in a living room or bedroom. Every time I pass it, I play a minute and I know I’d have a lot more opportunity for that if it was inside! Generally I schedule my practices, but yea, if I get a chance to do a little something in between, I do!

MemberAugust 10, 2014 at 9:46 am in reply to: What’s your flexibility nemesis? Share hints and tips!My biggest flexy struggle right now is my hamstrings. I stretch them gently every day except one or two, but I can’t seem to get them any looser. I’m a scaredy cat…totally afraid of pulling one so I’m super cautious. It’s a situation.

TropicalPole, My apologies. I just realized I replied to the wrong discussion. Happy to hear you’ve figured it out!

There are pros with wearing “dance” heels. I used to wear regular 5 inch stilettos to dance in. They were ok for just dancing around the pole, I never really got on it with them so I cannot vouch for that part. However when I bought a pair of 6 inch platformed heels, it took a ton of pressure off my foot because I was only technically wearing 4 inchers now, though they looked taller. And there is a metal rod through the heel so it’s more secure for the constant abuse these shoes will be put through. Same for the platform. It’s plastic (?) Making it very durable. So you can wear regular heels, but you may find you’ll want to invest in a dance specific pair. I never thought I would like platforms but now I want ALL THE SHOES!!
