Yeah I find this hard too. I can do a fair few of the intermediate moves here on the lessons but cant manage the thigh rest from standing, at all, which sucks because its listed as beginner here and I feel crap about not being able to do it. In Veena's lessons she makes it look so easy and effortless but when I try it feels impossible! I can also do it in the air but not from the floor Dustbunny, it is very weird indeed!

I think for a beginner lessons at a studio are great! They'll definitely be beneifical provided you go to a good studio!

I hurt my hamstring a few months back and was told to rest it as much as possible but of course even after a few days of rest, the day to day wear and tear of walking to and from work, walking up stairs etc all prevented the pain from fully going away. I ended up in agony for close to three weeks so I gave accupuncture a try. I remained sore all that day but woke up the next morning with no hamstring pain at all (my skin hurt from the accupressure massage) but the injury seemed to have healed overnight. I heard injuries to the hamstring are prone to returning a few times a year but at least I know something works if it happens again. Maybe you could look into it for your back if it doesn't heal soon.

It's a real shame you can't get the video you're looking for. I do remember seeing Alethea's handcuff performance and I'm sure it was on youtube, it was AMAZING. Like I remember feeling goosebumps and my tummy tightening up during some of her routine, it was so excellent. But now when I try find it I can't so it must have only been up for a short time. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif

I have level 4 and I love it. I suppose it depends on how much a dancer's hands sweat, mine are very, very bad! Level two is also good but once I'm really warmed up if I want to continue doing inverts and climbs then I have to use level 4. Love Itac!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_heart1.gif

    Good luck with the performance!

Just to update anyone who's interested.

I got my free samples as promised by Peter. Not only did he let me sample one level but because I had no experience with grip aids he gave some level 2 and level 4. Excellent customer care I must say! That already impressed me to find a company so eager and generous about their product.

Anyway I tried both of them and they are AMAZING! I actually cannot believe how it feels to not slip off after two spins. I could stay upside down far longer and work on inverted moves far more confidently. I am amazed by how much my slippy grip must have been holding me back. This stuff is freakin' excellent.

I will definitely be ordering some myself.

Thank you Peter and Itac 2! Much appreciated.

Wayhey another fairy! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif Welcome along, if you can't attend regular classes I deffo recommend getting Veena's lessons on here once your pole comes. I've learned loads from them and I generally just feel safer having step by step instruction!

Welcome to you too Blue!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

I got my first Hollywood wax done today (not sure what it's called in every country but it's basically where everything is taken off!) To be honest, it wasn't half as bad as I imagined it would be. Of course there were certain parts that hurt more than others but on a scale of 1-10, I'd rate the pain a 4 in the bad spots! The real discomfort is now really, it's been like 15 hours since I had it done and I still feel a bit tender but it's not that bad. Overall, not that painful of an experience at all, I really expected much, much, much worse! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

I got some spray off the waxer to start using in 2-3 days to prevent ingrowns, this is my main concern having been an epilator user for a while, I know only too well how ugly ingrowns are. So hopefully this spray will minimise any of that!

There is indeed. It's one of my fave pole videos ever, even though it's quite simple, she dancer her heart out. If you Youtube Leighann La Tortura you should find it. I think she does the spin relatively near the beginning of the video.

I started Bikram yoga tonight…. WOWOWWWOWOWWOW!!! So hot and sweaty and there were parts where I wanted to die but I surprised myself by how much more flexibility I had once I was really hot. I can definitely get how this is beneficial when done consistently. I have 30 days paid for, it's some kind of 30 day challenge to see how many times you can go in one week. I hope that in 30 days I can write back here and say I went pretty consistently.

    Runemist, here it is. http://www.google.ie/imgres?imgurl=http://www.empowermentthroughexoticdance.com/Jan2010Gallery05.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.empowermentthroughexoticdance.com/PoleGallery.htm&usg=__sZzBcQ9HcS1jAehOONPEPFKnGTg=&h=600&w=400&sz=68&hl=en&start=0&sig2=g-S8_QMWO0sChrwSkRAxHw&zoom=0&tbnid=WnlIFXjAuyzQgM:&tbnh=135&tbnw=90&ei=1AE2TdXDMYiAhQfhkZybCw&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dfront%2Bhook%2Bpole%2Bdance%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1366%26bih%3D653%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=247&vpy=133&dur=1894&hovh=135&hovw=90&tx=103&ty=41&oei=1AE2TdXDMYiAhQfhkZybCw&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=19&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0

I never liked it much until I seen Leigh Ann do a real sexy variation of it. Now I am determined to make it look gorgeous and graceful! Like you, EagleSpirit, I found the back hook far easier. My biggest issue was not feeling secure in holding myself in place and allowing myself to go forward around the pole. You will get it eventually, I used to HATE this spin and now I really want to get a sexy Leigh Ann front hoot down! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

I got an email tonight saying that there is one space left in her intermediate class, apparently you need to have a comfortable invert to take part. I assume this means a comfortable basic invert/crucifix? That I have but I am still worried I am not experienced enough for this class, I still can't get the goddamn inverted V. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_evil.gif

If anyone has done her intermediate class can you please let me know what is required of you?

    Thank you!

I agree with the private mail idea. Although her video could lead beginners into unsafe habits, it is probably a bit embarrassing for an instructor to take some public criticism like that. I would be worried about prospective students being turned away by reading anything critical online and although I totally agree with you that she should know better, I'd feel terrible for damaging somebody's business, especially when I'm not 100% sure on how safe her teaching style really is. There is always the possibility that she is a beginner level instructor where she won't teach inverts at all. Plus for your sake, you'll save yourself a lot of drama and youtube sniping by telling her privately.

I agree if she's teaching students to jump in then she's irresponsible and a danger to her students but we don't know if this is the case from watching one youtube video. 🙂

My first pole instructor told me to jump in. In fact, she said I should hold the pole, take a bit of a run and throw my legs up over my head… needless to say I couldn't do it for a long time. When I finally did learn to invert properly I was stunned by how different it felt to trying to get  up there with a big swing. My arms felt less stressed, my shoulders didn't hurt and I felt far more in control and less likely to fall. The same teacher suggested I work on the chopper/inverted V move before a basic invert because it was somehow 'easier' if you just jumped and flung yourself backwards. Yeah right.

Awh you poor thing. I had a similar issue when I first got my pole (also chrome) and I put it down to the fact that it wasn't 'broken' in yet. I just kept practising really, really simple things, like walking around it, underarm turns, slides etc until I felt more at ease gripping it to try spins and things. Eventually it was perfect for everything, including inverts. Now it's great. I love my chrome!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif I hope it gets sorted soon

I know the point being made was that it's harder to make friends when you're older but I can relate too. I'm the type of person who makes 'friends' everywhere I go. I click with everybody. But at the same time, while I get along with everyone and am liked by people on the surface, I've nothing close with them. Honestly, if my life fell apart tomorrow I actually don't know who I'd call. I know this might sound weird but I'm invited to parties all the time etc but I'm not close to anyone. I'm kind of socially everyone's friend but they're never, ever there when it really matters. I seem to be the person who constantly gets screwed over and used. I assume it's my fault in some way, I think I'm far too approachable and too open so I'm a beacon for people who are a bit damaged and a bit insecure. I'm totally with you guys on this, older or not.

Heeey Welcome along! I look forward to see your bellydance/poledance fusion videos in the future 😉

I'm not experienced enough to give you any tips but one thing I will say (as I wish I had have been told this) is, if at first you find that you can't manage so called 'simple spins', don't give up.

I was so SO close to throwing in the towel because I honestly thought that I just sucked. In my first poling class we were shown how to do the fireman spin, chair spin and the carousel. In my opinion, these are not basic nor simple, particularly the chair and carousel, I honestly kept slipping, couldn't really get going around the pole, body slammed into the pole etc because I was not anywhere near strong enough (or confident enough in being strong) to manage these moves. But because I was put in a position where they were the first moves I ever tried to do on the pole, I felt really stupid for even thinking I could pole dance.

I still really think that they rely too much on arm strength to be expected of an absolute beginner. I suppose what I'm saying is, move at your own pace because there are many perceptions of what 'simple' pole moves are and that can sometimes pressure you and make you disheartened when you have difficulty with it. Even now when I see beginner videos showing inverts, I'm just thinking ''what the heck?!'. So you're 100% right to take it slowly for your own safety. Fair play to you! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

The only suggestion I can give for strength is Veena! Her lessons are deadly, she has a whole separate section of just strength building exercises and they can be made nice and simple or really hard, depending on what you're able to do. She'll also show you lots of nice beginner moves that DO NOT involve being expected to be able to hold your whole body weight at your very first attempt (haha I'm like a dog with a bone over my first class, haha!)

Congrats on your new pole and I wish you lots of success and safety!
