I certified with Collette Kakuk who owns OC Pole Fitness and she is the manager for Felix Cane. I only allow instructors who have OC POLE FITNESS INSTRUCTORS to teach at my facility. She will travel also. Check her out too. Good luck and Happy Poling!

Ice Ice Ice. And Some anti-inflamm's. if you take those. The only way it can heal is if the swelling goes down. ice a few times a day. If it hurts don't use it heavily, you don't want to tear a muscle. That takes a REALLY long time to recover from. After it is on the road to recovering you can start your rotator cuff exercises, make sure you also work the muscles in the upper and mid back to get  upper quandrant to be more balanced and stabilized. I'm sure Veeena has some great tips on this site.

And after it is better Ice after you do use it.

Out in Cali…If people want to sue you they can, and having any type of corp; Ie.S-Corp, C-corp, or LLC doesn't always protect you I've been told by my legal professional. Getting the best insurance you can will help protect you the most.

If you go legalzoom.com they are a great resource to get some basic fees for incorporating your business. It would cost me 1500.00 to have my lawyer do the paper work for me to form a corp out here. If you do it yourself it is cheaper. I would double check the "registering" a corp, might not be the same as forming a corp. LLC's out in Cali are Limited Liability Corp. You usually have partners if you do that one. If it is only you, you might look into S-"type" Corp. I think a C-Corp would be to much of paper- work and time for a small business at first.

I'm sure you will figure it out what is right for you with all the great info you have gotten from the forum..and others of course.

Congrats! on your new business! Women in small business..Love it!

Hi, I own a Pilates and Pole facility in California. So You need to check what you in need your state.

Here are my questions…Are you renting space in a dance studio by the Hour or are you renting a Part of this facilty. Like a 1000 square foot room on a monthly basis?

If you are renting by the hour and are an independant contractor then you probably are considered a "personal trainer" BUT you should look into being considered a "gymnastics instructor" once you start teaching pole.

Most IC's out here pay a couple hundred dollars a year for their inusrance. You mentioned that you will only teaching belly dancing at first right? In genreal an IC needs liabilty..when you have"property" you might need more insurance.

I have a lot of equiment for Pilates and Pole, I have Property Insurance and Liabilty Insurance, I also put about 20,000 into improvements into the building I rent, so I have property insurance that includes this "buildout" of the business. If get broken into or a window gets broken insurnace would help fix that stuff.

DBA is a "doing business as"…Are you using your own name or a "business name" I ahve the DBA of Pegasus Pilates, but I am a sole propieter and I use my social sercurity number instead of an EIN. You can get an EIN….Its just a different way the IRS can Identify you for your taxes. EINs are easy to get….So it's a SS# or EIN. Not a big deal.

Do not incorporate until you know you are making enough money to cover the costs of the minimum fees that they have every year….And it's a lot more paper work, lawers fees, blah//blah..blah…blah..I've been told by my legal prefessionals….wait to become a corp until you know it's worth it. 9 years later almost worth it, but until the economy gets better i'm holding off.

I only know the SBA and the "Small Business Association" they are a resouce for small business's and have "SBA Loans".

The IRS Website has a slot of information for small business to make sure they are filing correctly. Check it out…You want the IRS on your good side always.

I have a brick and mortar facility so I have a business licsnence in the city I have my business. Check to see what your city requires.

I would recommend a seperate business bank account so that your are not mixing biz and personal money. In CA and you have DBA you have to list your DBA in the paper a few weeks and bring in proof before you can open your account. If you use your own name foryour  business your don't need a DBA, I still recommend a seperate account.

I hope this helps a little.

A resale Cert. is a liscence if you intend on selling things to clients. It enables you the ability to "buy wholesale" from companies. You have to keep VERY GOOD track of your enventory and pay your sales tax that you have collected from the sales of your wholesale items.

They usually have lots of good info on there website revelavant to where YOU live.

I'm in my 40's and have been around the block a few times….so.that being said. I find it a lot easier to be true to my own natural clock. Eat when you are hungry, sleep when you are tired, and pole when you feel like it. And be Okay with that. This is your life, don't live it with someone else's standards. Trust yourself and know thyself. if you are bored, than do something that interests you. I find that being creative, painting, drawing, singing, or making something can help bring me out of my funk. Teach yourself how to do something…for example.. Make a model airplane or learn to crochet. Keep your mind young and inspired with doing things you don't normally do. There once was a time in my life that I think I slept for almost 6 months in a sense…and then one day the light went on and I decided to open my own business..that was my path. I knew it with all my heart and soul, and I wouldn't have gotten there without the "low time" to quiet my mind and help me discover my "core" being… Look at this 'funk" as a time of growth and be open to what it is telling you..so ask yourself and be open to the anwer, no matter how bizare that anwer is. Then take the steps to get there, and be open to any tools that might be nescessary to get there. Whether it be Saint John's Wart or what ever it is.

Oh PS.. I use Insure(the drink, chocolate is good0 for snacks or a piece of cheese. It only takes a second and there you have a "meal"

The only thing that can limit you is "Your Mind." Be the one that changes what the "typical" is. Every women has a unique beauty and grace. I think that is part of pole…It's being your own unique and beautiful creature. Look within yourself to find out who you are with the pole. You like  these girls because they "have something"…they express their heart. It's not just a technique..it's a feeling too.

  • I have 4 painted lil mynx and a SS little mynx. They are too short, you can only use 8 feet of the pole no matter how high your ceilings are. I love the ease of putting them up and taking them down. The SS is a little more slippery, I clean it with ecetone once in awhile, and vinegar once in awhile…but mosly just use a micro fiber towel on it. I also put a little dry hands on and then grab the pole and rub it on it too. It grips great, just needs to be worn in a little. The studio I "certed" at had PS poles. My beginners love the lil minx painted poles, they are easier to learn on, because of they are a little grippier. I personally would not buy them again, just because I had a problem with one and the husband and wife owners were on polar opposites on how they handled the situation. They are not really interested in standing behind their product. I thought about retailing them, but I will not now because of that situation. I do think they put out a safe product, but there is always a lemon in the bunch…I don't use "my lemon" now from lil mynx. I just call it a loss, and will buy a different brand when I expand.

I love PP. I use it at night, and then about an 30 minutes before I pole. I stick great, and don't have dry skin now. I just pump it on my legs, then rub it in. A little goes a long way.

Try to get her to trust her pole to hold her up. Let her walk around and lean out as far as she can. I to teach behind the knee holds too and let them see that it is easier to let the pole support you then it is too close. No offense, I dont' know what Veene calls this spin. (for some reason I was never able to sign p for lessons because of a paypal/website issue) Hey Veena, I would like to sigh up, is the problem fixed now?)

Anywho…..it's like a hip dip, 360, pike spin. So you have more of a half bracket hold. (pushing away form the pole with bottom hand) Tell her to get her hips as far away from the pole when whe does this. Inside plant, lean away with body and hips, face pole, place non dominant hand on pole to allow that push/pull, tell her to place her outside foot around the pole to the inside foot. I find that the enertia eventually takes their inside foot off the floor. Helps teach the sensation of the spinning.

If you can only say "that look bad" then you shouldn't say anything. I always try to use phrases like "this and that were great….now you are ready to take it to the next level and "point your toes," take less steps or whatever it is that could polish the performance. Or i like to say "a more advanced version of that move that I think you are ready for is…blah blah blah.. then explain what you mean.

Most often we don't know we are doing something not quite right, and also you have to make it realtive to that individual.

Glitter have you tried "Dry Hands" . I find that itac2 gets really greasy on my hands after a little bit. It works on my lower legs though. I like might grip too over dry hands. (make sure you let the dry hands dry first and then you have to heat up your hands to get the might grip to activate. Don't use too much might grip)

I think because my environment is humid and warm here. Some people can use itac and have a great response from it.

    Good luck at your performance!

I own a Pilates and Aerial fitness studio and this does not look like (to me) that it suggests that you work at their facility. In fact they are giving you the credit that you are do. If you are practicing there and give them money to use there space. (Even if it is $5.00) then you are a student there. I wouldn't judge the teacher until you understand why they are only teaching the "basics." I teach my students the basics for quite awhile to prevent injury. (It only takes a second to pull your muscle and then you could be out for weeks. Many new polers pull a late in the beginning from lack of strength and improper body mechanics.) I also teach my students the basics for a while so that they have flow in their "poling" instead of looking like they go from trick to trick. Some people are take to the pole easier than others. Just because it might have taken you only "this much time" to get a move it doesn't mean that it's that way for everyone. For some this is a very difficult piece of apparatus.

If they are a newer facility then I would take it as a great complement that they asked if you are interested in teaching.  I have gotten some of my best instructors that way, and I know of some other facilities that have too. You should definetly get certified and you should get paid for sure! A proper cert. program will teach you how to safely spot correctly and flow of moves. When you are able to teach someone what you can do then you have truely mastered your craft.

But always, be careful…don't let them take advantage of you, and make sure they are the type of facility you would like to align yourself with.

I've been using acetone on my coated pole and stainless. Does anyone know if that is a bad idea? It seems to really clean the pole. I am going to try the vinegar too.

April 22, 2011 at 6:43 pm in reply to: tips for a more controlled headstand?

I learned my headstands and handstands this way…for the headstand bring your feet as far apart as you can, make sure your back is on the pole, as you laterly (turn out) your legs and feet lift and press the back of your head into the pole to anchor yourself. Imagine that you are unrolling the spine up the pole as you "extend" your back up the pole.

For the handstand you need to be away from the pole farther then you would think. Turn your hands sideways, fingers pointed away from your head. Place you feet very far apart. Bend down and put your back on the pole, go up onto your toes and press your head into the pole. Make sure you are really pushing through your should girdle..press yourself towards the pole. Try it on the wall first. Practice regular handstands to make sure you have enough shoulder strength for this move. Also make sure your floor is not slippery so that your hands don't slide away from pole.
