Don't get discouraged! It's hard at the beginning because you expect yourself to be awesome and do all these cool things you've seen on Youtube or wherever. But it's like a snowball, you slowly build up strength and get it rolling and then things speed up after that. It sound like you have some physical issues that are hindering the process. If I may suggest, perhaps make an appointment to go see a physician who practices osteopathic manipulative medicine. They do amazing things for people with chronic pain and range of motion issues. Good luck!

I did the Pure Splits DVD yesterday and while I don't think it was perfect, it did give me some new stretches to try. Some "beginner" stretches were so difficult I couldn't even do them. As she says in her video, she has worked daily for three years on her flexibility. Obviously I know that flexibility is something not easily attained. The DVD starts with some kicks, cowboy stretches and then moved into a straddle on the floor. She's like "oh, now just open your legs and get a good stretch" which she promptly gets them to 180 degrees. I'm feeling discouraged because I can go half that and am struggling. We all know that sh'se super flexy and maybe this sounds weird, but I wish that she made herself seem less flexible and demonstrate more "beginner" stretches because we're starting out nowhere near her level. Does that make any sense at all? Haha!
Nonetheless, the DVD provided a variety of stretches and I felt like my hamstrings and hip flexors were far less tight afterwards. I'm going to try the Stretching for Pole today and I'll let you know how it goes 🙂

I have a difficult time myself. I’ve tried to listen to my body to figure out the issue. I’ve ascertained it’s all about back flexibility. I can tuck up and hold myself with minimal exertion but as soon as I try to tilt back I feel a lot of tightness in my back. I bought Alathea Austin’s stretching DVDs, so I’m hoping that helps.

NARS Orgasm blush, the best blush in the whole wide world. I also cannot live without Missha BB cream. It has the perfect amount of coverage, has SPF 50, anti-aging properties, and feels weightless unlike other foundations I've tried. I pretty much love anything MAC, I have tons of eyeshadows, lipsticks and lipglosses. And Laneige's water sleeping pack. It's a gel you put on at night, it smells so good and it's supposed to help aid in falling asleep. It provides a ton of moisture without any stickness or breakouts because it's oil free.

I’m a nurse and I’m friends with lots of my co-workers on facebook. I post lots of pole stuff and all my colleagues have been super supportive. We joke about it and they love to see my photos.
I guess health care professionals are an odd breed because we talk about some quite taboo topics at work. So pole dance seems tame in comparison 🙂

I agree with the other ladies. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. You'll progress at your own pace, your body will let you know when it's time to be able to do the hold. You just have to stick with it and build up your strength and it will come.
I started poling at the end of February 2012 and when I first started I could barely sit on the pole, I couldn't climb the pole, my spins were awful. Haha! I watched the other girls in the class get holds before I could. One girl was so insanely good she did a shoulder mount on the first try and she had never pole danced before. It was really frustrating, but I stuck with it because I wanted to keep learning. I really worked on conditioning and voraciously watched youtube tutorials and videos at home. It paid off because now I can do advanced moves like the Extended Butterfly, Caterpillar Climb, and the Ayesha.
I still struggle with my own weaknesses, of course. My chopper looks like crap 30 minutes into a practice session and I can only get a Superman 50% of the time. So, long story short, try not to compare yourself to anyone. Just let your determination be your guide.

I have wide, flat feet. I recently bought a pair of Pleasers and though they are very narrow, I found that just going up one size from my "normal" shoe size did the trick. I normally wear an eight so I tried on a nine and they were snug but I'm sure the material will give a bit as I wear and stretch them out. They are surprisingly comfortable.

Nice! I'm a registered nurse as well, but I work in the ICU. I'm currently obtaining my master's of science in nursing. I have one more year left and then I can take my boards to be a nurse practitioner.
