Always poled in either short shorts that I used in my swing dancing days, bathing suit bottoms, or Pole Skivvies. I absolutely cannot pole in pants or capris. It just bothers me for some reason. Lol. And the studio I go to recommends shorts over pants and actually requires it for the intermediate and advanced classes.

So, I don't get to film myself often. I am really self conscience of poling in front of others, so I don't like to record during class or hold people up after class. I think after almost 7 months of poling, I've only recorded myself 3 times. Hopefully I will be getting a pole this Summer and if so I expect to record myself at least weekly to see my progress and work on tweaking things for improvement.

Amen. I personally do not have a sexy personality so I don't even attempt to dance that way, lol. I totally respect the girls who can pull off sexy. Besides, it would be boring if everyone danced the exact same way.

Mine is the same way. He's fine with me taking classes/poling while he's gone (i.e. during the day) but we've had it out on poling after he's home. It's a recurring argument in our household.

My family and friends know I pole. I am a very honest person and I don’t believe in hiding things. From day one I let people know I was poling. I post about it on Facebook. I’ve run into some negativity from my mom and brother mainly. My dad was weird about it at first. He always use to reference Chris Rock’s joke about a father’s job is to keep his daughter off the pole. Once I showed him some pics and actually sent him a video of me poling, he realized that I wasn’t stripping and that it truly is an athletic activity. (I did send him a very non-sexy video of me basically just doing tricks and spins.) My mom was very nervous about it at first, but again after seeing a video and pictures she became accepting. The oldest of my two brothers has been the biggest challenge. He is 20 years old and he has a certain image of pole dancers. When I posted a few pictures on Facebook of me poling (first picture was of me doing a Peter Pan and the other was me just doing a pole sit) he immediately starting making negative comments on my album. I have confronted him and told him that I don’t strip, though I see nothing wrong with women who do. I explained that I do it for fitness. I told him to hit my mom up for the video, but he refused. I have sort of accepted that it makes him uncomfortable and that he’s not cool with it. I at least expect the negativity now, but I hope that one day he’ll come around.
I hate that everyone automatically thinks girls who pole are all strippers and "loose," because that’s just not the case. I’ve had luck getting a few family and friends to actually go to a beginners pole class with me to see what it’s about. With all cases, my guests have left looking for a place to pole back in their town or have signed up at the studio I go to. Once they realize it’s fun and not dirty, they love it!

I’ve been poling for almost 6 months. I did do some gymnastics as a kid and then I’ve been a ballroom/swing dancer for the past 6.5 years. I can honestly say that neither experiences gave me any sort of edge. Yes, there are things that I catch on to quicker than others but at the same time, there are things that are so foreign and frustrating to me. For example: Pirouettes and pointed toes= no problem. Not jumping into moves= huge problem. In both gymnastics and aerials in ballroom and swing dancing, jumping into moves is expected. So when I started pole, not jumping was a completely foreign concept. I still have a bad habit of doing it with new moves. It’s frustrating and I look at other polers and wonder why can’t I just get it like they do. I realize it’s a progression, though, and practice makes perfect as cliched as that is.
Just try to keep in mind that everyone learns differently and at their own pace. Be proud of what you can do instead of what you can’t. Keep your chin up! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

When I work out I HAVE to make sure get protein or I start losing weight/muscle. (I weigh around 93lbs and losing any weight makes me look sickly.) I usually stick with protein shakes right I workout/pole. There are a ton of varieties and they don’t taste as bad as people tried to tell me they were. I buy the powder and alternate between smoothies and milkshakes, just to liven things up. I would definitely recommend starting up on some protein powder/drink mixes.

Interesting. Let us know how it works!

I usually don’t get dizzy while poling but when I use to ballroom dance, Waltz and Polka would make me so dizzy and sick. For me, remembering to breath and spot were very useful and I find myself using those same techniques for poling. I have the tendency to hold my breath when I am working on something and even when I feel sick. This is bad and will only make you sicker. Try to take deep, slow breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth when you start to feel nauseated.
Spotting is another way I keep myself from getting all dizzy when working on spins. Basically pick a point anywhere in the room that you can focus on. For me, it’s the mirror or my pole itself. I try to keep my eyes centered on this point and place my focus there at all times. So if I start to turn, I try to whip my head around quickly enough so that my eyes never leave my focal point. It takes practice to get good at, but once you do I find that it helps eliminate the dizziness.
Also tip my mom use to give me (she gets motion sick easily), when you start to feel dizzy NEVER look at the ground or close your eyes. We have a tendency to want to do both when we feel ourselves getting dizzy but it actually makes the nausea worse. Keep your head up and work on deep breathing.

Thought I would throw this out there: Fawnia’s studio here in Vegas, Pole Fitness Studio, is offering certification courses this Spring.
She has information listed on her website: http://www.polefitnessstudio.com/certification.html?filename=Certifications

Depends on the moves. Some I pick up on the first or second try. Some I get instantly, then forget and some take weeks before I can fully do it.

I think I might have to try it. I’ve struggled with anemia since I was a teen, but could never stomach regular iron pills. They always made me so sick. I did some research, and the reviews for Ultimate Iron are really good.

Coming from a dance background, I can easily remember to point the toes when doing "dance related" work i.e. pirouettes, fan kicks, etc. But when learning a newer/complicated move I always forget. It’s something that I have to remind myself of constantly while working on new things.
What I’ve learned is to just keep working at it, and you’ll get there!
