LOVE the death lay drop!!!  I've been dropping from superman into scorpio and I hate doing it …. I'm going to go try this tonight.  It looks like a superman drop into a kind of shoulder dismount??

Thanks a lot Eva!  It does look like a good one to work on … and it looks stable too!  I've never done that particular pigeon variation.

    you're very welcome!

I always forget about Supershag.  They also have a beautiful studio.  I wish I had a car so I could check them out more often, it's just impossible for me to get down there!

While we're pimping out our favorite Boston places, there is also Simply Circus in Newton (Chinese pole, silks, lyra and flexibility training).  It's also hard for me to get to, but it's a nice complement to pole dance.  Steven, the owner, is a great guy and I have recommended several friends to him 🙂

🙂  I just saw Veena's advice.  It's much more specific than mine, haha.  Mine is pretty vague, but I wanted to let you know you're not crazy, I had the exact same feeling when I first tried it!

I put my hands wider than a normal handstand when I do this.  Otherwise I have the same feeling that my hands can't hold me, and I have strong handstands.  You're talking about the one all the Bespun girls do, where your hips are on the other side of the pole from your shoulders, right?

what amy said will keep you busy for weeks, hehe … great ideas.  i do the same stuff to give my hands a break.

you could also try switching sides and trying every spin and invert you know on the other side.  🙂  i did it after i pulled a rib muscle … it was infuriating at first, now i love how comfortable i am on both sides!

Thought I would reply — I have mine up with a LARGE bolt into a structural beam, a carabiner, and a rescue 8.  I bought the bolt from Home Depot and the others from REI.

The fabric is 40 denier nylon tricot at $7.50/yd from http://fabricdepotco.com/2011Pages/page29.html.  Yes, they are stuck in the last century and you have to mail in an order form or call them — but they are total sweethearts and will write you personal emails telling you they have received and shipped your order!

I have a 45mm TG and dance at a studio with 45 and 50mm chrome poles.  Although I was hoping for more grip in the titanium, the materials both feel just the same to me!  The biggest difference to me is in diameter.  The smaller poles make me feel much more secure in hand grips.

I'm in Boston!!  I used to teach at Gypsy Rose as "Sasha" … now I just study at Boston Pole Fitness and might teach there starting in the summer.  I recommend their "Polegression" classes (like an open pole, they work on whatever you want to).  Say hi to me if you go there … I'm, well, the little blond one 😀

I won't be at the pole showcase on Saturday.  I went last year and … well, it was cute, but it's a student recital.  And I've already seen the lovely ms. raquellestarr dance 🙂  But I will be at Marlo's workshops on Sunday at SuperShag.  If you live in Boston, you should call and see if they still have space.

Providence is only 1 hr from me … we should totally do it!

i have to schedule at least one more at nypd but can't decide 🙂

amy, how can i see what classes are at body and pole that weekend?  i'm guessing they're different than normal.  i'd love to take a class with marlo!

hi hazeldej (as well as vickiezoo and amy)

I've also been poling for a few years and just started teaching beginners.  I thought from teaching my friends, and generally loving every moment on the pole, that I would love teaching and that it was the next logical step for me.  Actually, I've actually really been struggling teaching beginners' classes.  Sometimes there's only one girl, sometimes they take their frustration out on me, sometimes they just can't seem to "get it" and I feel like I'm failing them!  Plus, we never do anything advanced, so in a way, I feel like I'm always struggling with them over the same spins.  When I first started teaching a few months ago I got really depressed about poling.

Sooo … you are not alone!  I agree …  taking time for yourself is so important.  I cut down to teaching one night a week and it has made all the difference.  I don't take pole classes but I set aside time to practice and to take other classes that focus on upper body and core, like yoga and handbalancing.  I notice how good I feel about my poling is in direct proportion to how much time I set aside just for ME and my body.  🙂

    OK … I am a perfectionist. I admit it!!!
I tried to take a picture of the joint that’s bothering me, and it’s impossible to even see the problem. At least I’m honest to a fault.

    pole1.JPG

I have it listed on Craigslist for $200, but I will honor the price of $100 if someone from SV wants to buy it. Ok … I’m done! Someone buy my pole!!

    Summer – I sent you a message https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Thanks for the encouragement all https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif I tried to price it fairly. As I said in my message to Summer, I think the design of PS poles is flawed. All PS poles tighten by means of threads — the pieces screw together. You have to be careful not to overtighten the pieces, or the ends of the segments can begin to flare out. Because of this overtightening, it’s now possible to just feel the edge of the two largest pole segments on this pole. It’s not a problem for dancing and has not gotten any worse since I noticed it a year ago and reassembled the pole properly, but this is a reason I am selling this pole so cheaply. If you aren’t careful and continue to overtighten the pole, like I did, it will get worse.

Therefore, I’m trying to sell it at a gentle price that will make room in my house and send it to someone who will continue to appreciate it for the sturdy pole it is … but with a discount that takes into account this design flaw.

That’s weird. But I also have a PS pole (2") that’s incredibly slippery. It’s the older model with the adjuster on top.

December 16, 2010 at 3:40 pm in reply to: Aradia Poles?

I just came across this while researching to buy a new pole. I think some people are getting confused.

Aradia sells a 1.5" pole, which is exactly 38mm.
X-POLE and PLATINUM STAGES sell a 1.75" pole, which is 45mm.
Then, ALL of them also have the 2" or 50mm we all know.

I think some people are getting confused because x-pole and platinum stages offer a 45mm, or 1.75", pole as their small size. The "small" Aradia pole is smaller than that! They’re not lying — it says on their site 1.5". It’s the same 38mm used in Australia.

    Hope this helps. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I always wear hot yoga shorts — I had a bunch from Bikram and found they’re perfect for pole! My favorites are the Mikaela and Betty shorts from Mika (mikayogawear.com) and the side string shorts from Shakti (shaktiactivewear.com.) I give all my workout shorts the "standing bow" test in front of a mirror for gaps. I have never been 100% happy with "boyshorts" for classes, just feels too casual.

December 6, 2010 at 8:49 pm in reply to: Do you really need rest days???

Yeah, for "exotic dancers" the goal is to do as little work as possible to make money! Most girls do floorwork and dancing on their feet with a few pole tricks thrown in. You get sweaty but it’s all cardio. However, it’s worth noting that most dancers don’t work five days a week https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

However, I’m bad at resting too, so if I do a long practice one day or learn new tricks, I’ll try and alternate the types of moves I work on the next day if I just can’t stay off the pole. Like if I do a billion shoulder mounts on Monday, on Tuesday I focus on my leg holds. If I just do continuous freestyle dancing and don’t feel sore the next day, I have no problem practicing multiple days in a row.

Teaching pole classes on consecutive days doesn’t make me sore because it’s only a few demonstrations of moves that are now easy for me… But believe me when I first learned them, I had to take breaks!

Yeah give Bikram a try! I haven’t been going lately, but I went 4x a week all summer. It’s great for weight loss and allover flexibility (especially hamstrings, hips, and back). And you feel like a million bucks afterward. However, before your first time, make sure you have drunk a QUART of water that day — not a typo — and bring another with you. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I actually love the repetition of Bikram yoga, but never found that it directly helped my splits. I also got frustrated with the lack of challenge and variety. I loved the heat, but I miss bird of paradise, inverts, crow, etc. Maybe I will start again over January https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I have a SS platinum stages and it is the most slippery pole I’ve ever worked on. Kinda sucks.

I have tried it in an unheated warehouse in winter, a really warm dorm, my current perfect-temperature apartment … doesn’t matter. I’ve tried lotion, every concoction mentioned on here, doesn’t make much of a difference. I only stick on it right after a shower and right after wiping it down.

At this point, I have to try and look at it as a benefit. *tries to make zen face*

Let me know if you have a specific question! I am in no way an expert, BUT I take classes at Simply Circus (the school linked above) and can ask the owner who is a professional rigger and has hung all of their aerial apparatus. I just ordered silks myself yesterday and plan to ask him about hanging mine. I have a large central wood beam in my house into which I can drill (but the top is not exposed, so I can’t make a sling).

I agree! I was always afraid of lotion because other girls slathering it on always made me slide off the pole (and really mad). Then I noticed that in the winter, putting on self-tanner and letting it dry before going on the pole seemed to make me stick better. It’s moisturizing, has vitamin E (like a lotion) but is a little tacky. Sometimes at home I use lotion though, right after the shower.

Thanks for the reminder, I’ve been sliding off my home pole like crazy, I should try this!
