I learned to do the extended butterfly first…. You have 2 hands and 1 foot/ankle on the pole in the butterfly as opposed to just 2 hands with ayesha…. I worked on that and my core strength and balance than I moved from the butterfly to the aysha… I would bring the extended leg back into the pole…. Slowly lower my feet on the pole.. Take 1 leg off… 2 legs off… Then work on straightening out my legs

I’m sure there’s other ways to learn it but I liked doing it this way cause it was like little tiny steps.. And I didn’t feel like I was failing cause I could take 1 step at a time

I agree with holding the moves

I have done the combo u speak of…. I started holding my extended butterfly as long as I could…. Aka until all the blood rushed to my head.. Haha…. I would try to get to a count of 30… I felt super comfortable with the butterfly doing this

Once I was comfortable with the first move I would do move 1 then move 2 and hold as long as possible… I would continue in this way…. I felt like I was building my endurance and comfort level with each move

My other thought is that if you are starting from the basic butterfly….. When you extend out make sure you are pulling your body away from the pole… If your body if too close.. Gravity is just pulling u straight down… The more you extend out the more gravity isn’t being placed right over your hands and you shouldn’t slide so easily

    Definately agree on the yoga!!!

As far as core… I live off of planks.. Haha… There’s just so many ways to vary it….. Just make sure you’re not letting your back sag down…. Tilt your hips and make sure your shoulder blades are not winging out

I learned the ayesha first then straight edge….. The way we were taught to get into it is a little long but it definately helped with my shoulder endurance…….
I would go into an extended butterfly then bring my free leg back to the pole.. I’ve heard this called a capital D……. So now u have one foot on either side of the pole.. Slowly lower them on the pole til ur kind of curled in a ball.. Then release one leg then the other and then slowly straighten them out…
That’s a little long but as far as baby steps.. It works.. U can slowly move further and further into the move as u feel comfortable

Once I had the ayesha I would slowly raise my legs in the air… I like going in the straight edge from the ayesha so u can adjust to the difference in balance

My studio uses an online business website…. Mindbodyonline.com……. Everyone signs up online.. There’s a 3 person waitlist.. People can cancel up to 4 hours before class and then the waitlist people would get notified

If they cancel within 4 hours of class.. They are still charged for class.. Since we use online sign up.. There credit card info is in the system

If they have have some sort of an unlimited website.. They have 3 late cancels/ no shows then they are charged $15 each time

I think it depends on your background. If you don’t have much of a “educational fitness” background, like experience teaching other fitness classes or a degree in something related….. I think its a good idea to look into some sort of certification just to learn the anatomy and injury prevention and basic tips on how to go about teaching

Discoveries Dance is awesome….. Angel is the best…. Her course is very affordable and goes over some things you may not think of….. Like breaking down moves… And when a student is ready to invert… And then of course injury prevention tips

October 3, 2011 at 11:58 pm in reply to: Biomechanics of two different splits?!?

U also have to remember when u are doing a regular split all of your weight is helping to push closer to the floor, its a more passive move, the more you relax the deeper you can get……. When you are on you’re back, you lose that advantage, your body weight is underneath you not on top on you now, you have to engage your muscles a little more too which sometimes takes away a little flexibility

If you can do a normal spilt, I would recommend continuing your flexibility by practicing over-splits… That might help a little
