@sparrow I just watched LymeLyte's handstand/headstand video she posted. I'm so jealous of hers!! 🙂 Is that how you do it?
-
@vickiezoo, handstand is driving me nuts, too. I've been trying to get it off and on for YEARS!!! I have that as one of my January Challenge goals. I have part I and part II practices here on sv. Just did another practice yesterday. I start out against the wall but don't have hamstring flexibility to get hips stacked to body. I'm supposed to be practicing it away from the wall, have done it twice in the last few months, but still have mental block to do it again. One of these days!!!!!
-
Mine is elbow grip Aysha, freaks me out and that $*&#* handstand, even basic to the wall. One of these days!

Like chemgoddes, said…depends why are you are poling. I think spin is very pretty for those who are strong and can accomplish things on it. I however, pole for fitness/strength workouts, so static works for me perfectly. Even though most of the time I'm reviewing and working hard at learning something new.
I do have static/spin options on my pole, I've tried spin couple of times and thought I was gonna die lol I also had an online lesson with skittles for spin mode, the video is on my profile. I did accomplish something, and it was fun, but not something I'm interested in as a habit. My pole skills and level are all I am comfortable with on static.

I use basic Panasonic Digital Camera DMC ZS19. Before that I also used a Panasonic earlier model but it died, so got this one.

WELCOME! Yes, feeling of silly in the begining and learning new moves. There are some things I still feel awkward with. And can feel that way when ready to learn or try something new.
Muscles sore/spaghetti, yes, for sure. It gets better. Also don't forget bruises/scrapes,etc. It's all part of the journey.
Never experienced the heel issues. Have pulled/strained ab muscles/lat muscles, etc. Mainly when did not warm up, PLEASE don't make that mistake and make sure to warm up! Or when tried to do something by kicking up into it instead of building proper core/arm strength to get something.
Death grip, oh, for sure! Sometimes I'm still told loosen hand grip with new things. I was learning spinning chopper the other day with a veneer via skype and she reminded me to loosen grip to spin more. agh! LOL
Every other day is great. I think a lot of us would do every day in the beginning and, for me, it was too much. Need to let muscles rest and I found I could practice better without body being super fatigued. It's hard because everytime I'd walk by my pole, I wanted to do "something".
You are not alone and this is a great place for support, encouragement, love and FUN!

MemberJanuary 13, 2013 at 12:24 am in reply to: Introduction, need some success stories?Let me be another veneer to welcome you! This is a great place to have fun, learn, get support and encouragement. As has been said, don't compare yourself to others. Everyone progresses differently, can learn different things at different times, etc. Poling takes time to develop strength. When I first started years ago I was already very active at a gym and weight power flex class. But at my first two pole classes I couldn't even do a simple pole up! I was shocked.
I have had veena's lessons on a yearly basis about twice already. I still found there were some things I couln't seem to get for some reason. As long as I was sure I could strength-wise, I would skip to the next one or so. I don't know how veena would feel about that. It's just my brain/body could not comprehend a technique or something so I'd go to another lesson.
Of course, there were some I would't try because I was not confident enough, especially without a spotter. Just have fun and enjoy progressing at your pace. There are some things I know I'll never get and that's okay for me. I'm also not a "pole dancer" as most, I pole for workout and exercise. I'm not good a the dancing part, and that's okay also.
If you can, join Friday chat, it's a lot of fun.

Love this challenge. It spurs me to work on what I've been procrastinating on, among many, but at least I can start something!
-
I have been wanting to work on strength for gemini climb, that will be first on my list.
I don't know if I DARE list handstand. It's been a horrible feat for years now. I record my attempts and delete them, it's pretty bad!!! Maybe I'll start keeping them now. I'm going to contact someone in my area to ask about scheduling sessions for this. Pretty bad to have to pay someone, but I've tried and tried and tried and tried. Gotten close once or twice at my fitness training, but not enough. My goal is to get this by end of year, yes, YEAR lol
@tacha666, since we both feel the same way about our attempts, let's do it and share to encourage each other https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Thanks for all the replies. I would only consider a 40mm if it came in titan gold which doesn't sound like it's going to happen. Plus would want to pole on one to see what it's like. I'm very thin and don't have much between the legs for thigh holds, etc and would worry about not having enough to hang on with.
Boy, it is personal preferance for fly gym, omni, or yoga hammocks. I don't have space in the house for the omni, looks like it takes a lot of space. I say I won't get into aerial work, but got to play on silks one time and loved it! I was considering fly gym for workouts, stretching, etc. But goes back to space, the room I have my pole in is kinda small and don't know if I have enough space to hang fly gym up without being in the way of my pole.
Decisions, decisions and I am terrible at decisions. Glad this thread is helpful to others who had questions.

I ordered the grip spray ingredients I have from aerial empowerment, love it and Hope is soooo nice. Is that the contact gal? Yoga Hammock, can it be used for same things fly gym is used for, whatever that is LOL I just hear how people love it (fly gym).

I also take weeks off now and then, mostly not by choice, but ends up being a good thing. I seem to be able to jump right back on and surprise myself. I don't panic as much anymore when I am taking time off for one reason or another. Let your body rest during this time and anticipate the enjoyment of starting again 🙂

As Lyme Lyte said, many new moves are painful. However, as Chem said, inverted crucifix is basis from invert to other things. Of all the things I learned, inverted crucifix was one that "did not" hurt, wonder if your vitamin deficiency causes your pain. Many of us get black/blue when learning things where skin is taught, grabbing, etc. so don't know if it's deficiency related for you or just part of poling.
As you said, ignoring the pain can allow you to get into position. Even though some things are more painful than others, getting passed the pain is the same for many moves. I remember learning Superman, OMG, soooooo painful. Now it's sooooooo fun to do.
Just "hang in there" and it'll get better. Keep us posted.

Congratulations, ladies!!! I also have drinking background in my family. Thankfully my dad got sober YEARS ago (his dad was a heavy drinker) so I don't remember his drinking days because I was too young. Unfortunately, my brother struggled and it got the best of him physically. I was what I refer to "borderline alcoholic" and stopped before the line was crossed.
Thank you for sharing so we can share in your accomplishment.

I agree it's difficult to find right person/place. I've been to ones that, even as a beginner with fitness, can tell it probably wasn't the right person because I could tell they weren't concerned with correct form, etc. Recently I found a fitness training place with an excellent trainer. It's his own fitness place and is the only trainer so I always know what I'm going to get.
He is big on correct form, mixes up workouts, etc. He also emphasizes proper eating habits to go along with workouts, and he cares about each person's goals and results. Even in a large group workout, it feels as if you have a personal trainer. I also take privates with him that are KICK-BUTT. He does a lot of things that are part of cross fit, but tailors workout for your own goals. He doesn't focus on competition or anything.
He doesn't focus on heavy weight lifting, we use free weights once in a while up to 10 lbs for women depending on level. Anyway I could go on and on and on, but like other said, be careful and make sure where you go is a compliment to pole and not the hard core competition focus like cross fit.
Oh, years ago I took a power flex weight class and for me, I got pretty strong. BUT when I found pole I couldn't do a thing becasue the strength and moves were very different, I was shocked because I felt I was strong. The bootcamp fitness I do now is helping my strength because it's a very well rounded workout that focus on strength building and endurance in all areas/forms.
Let us know how your complimentary session goes.

Yup, I agree, a pole with both. I will admit I don't use spin mode much, but it's nice to have when I want to "dabble" with it if even for a little while.

I've struggled with constipation seems like forever. Sometime not even feeling like constipation, but just not having bm on a consistent basis. My husband could not understand that it could be days for me. Knowing it's not good, thought that was just my body.
Couple months ago, a friend and I were talking about the protein shakes we use, various foods, etc. She mentioned something she uses and I tried some. I love how it helped my digestive system to be "normal." I bought my own and use almost every day when I make a protein shake. It's called: All Day Energy Greens http://www.ivlproducts.com/Superfoods/All-Day-Energy-Greens-174—The-Best-Energy-Supplement.axd?SRC=WBSRCH&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=ADEG_WBSRCH&gclid=CIqR1rjB5LMCFWrZQgodGCMAxw
I put a scoop of this with whatever else I mix in protein shake. I am regular and love that I don't have that backed up feeling.

Same here. Although I didn't lose much with pole, I did put on some muscle. However, I started a bootcamp style fitness workout program not too long ago, this workout includes A LOT of cardio along with all kinds of bootcamp workout. I was doing okay, but now am participating in the workout body toning challenge and wanted to lose in my stomach area, even though I'm small, my mid section got out of shape and "mushy." In the process of this, I cut out about everything that is junk food, sodas, sweets, late night eating, etc. I ended up losing few pounds along with getting leaner, etc.
I got an eating plan from my trainer, with the help of a dietician, that is to help maintain weight, as well as build muscle. It's hard because of my work schedule, etc., but am going to try. They also told me not to go by the scale, because I have lost fat, what little my body had, and gotten leaner. I feel GREAT, so not to worry. But to eat what will maintain and add muscle as I workout.
The tips here of main meals and snacks in between, or 5-6 small meals during day are on the eating plan, as well as what to eat pre/post workout and non workout days.
I also used to feel horrible when people (even people I DON'T know) would "inform" me how skinny I am, sickly I look, etc. I would get so depressed and my husband would have to work at getting me out of it. I've always been thin, with a short time or two of gaining few pounds. Now, I feel physically great, improved stamina, strength, and great workouts, so as long as I feel good about myself, it doesn't bother me what others think or say.
If your body is toning and you like it, don't listen to others. It is scarey, though, cuz it's hard for us to keep weight on. But I know why I'm more lean, I'm working out hard, but love the stamina and strength I've developed. I hope the same for you. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

MemberNovember 18, 2012 at 11:52 pm in reply to: New to pole – how to get past the sensitive skin areas when trying new pole movesFirst, WELCOME, this is a great place for your pole journey.
Others will give input, as far as I can tell, it just gets better over time and as your skin gets used to it. It's not just because you have a bit of fat, as you say, it was all very painful for me and I'm on the thin side. Pole sit, cross ankle/cross knee release, superman, etc. were all painful. Of course was not working on them at same time. Had to learn pole sit and move up on tricks/holds. My husband laughs at me when I do Superman now because he remembers when I used to hop off and jump up and down holding inside of my thighs in pain when I was learning it 🙂
Part of the pole journey is each new things starts with it's own pain/discomfort again. The new one for me was Teddy. BUT it's all worth it when it's accomplished!!!
Keep us posted on your progress https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

Oh, I forgot to mention I've also progressed from sv's lessons. How can I forget veena's lessons!!!!

For almost 6 years, also with some down time and not as consistent as I'd like. Also started at 51 yrs so a lot of catching up to do. I've gone to studio off and on, mostly off as there is not one close by that meets my poling style. So travel to a studio once in a while and various workshops when I can. Right now I'm not poling as much as I'd like due to family issues and also focusing a lot on a bootcamp fitness training. Although the fitness training has helped me finally accomplish split grip jackknife/aysesha, still need to clean it up but thrilled.

I have a 45mm titan gold and 45mm chrome. What happened was I had a 50mm titan gold few years ago and wanted a 45mm, BUT I bought it in chrome. Within few months I bought the 45mm in titan gold. Now depending on weather, etc. determines if I use the chrome or titan gold. Everyone skin type is different, weather is a factor, temperatue of room etc. But titan gold is great and there are different opinions of finish wearing off. A few said it's just the finish and doesn't affect the grip. Good luck, getting a pole is awesome!

MemberNovember 7, 2012 at 11:20 pm in reply to: Confused on people using multiple pole names….I'm hookedonpole here on sv and have two FB accounts…personal one with my real name for friends and family who are not into my pole sport (other than a few), then a pole FB acct with Yo Hookedonpole. I had a YT acct with hookedonpole and for some reason changed it to svveneer. The videos I upload to YT are listed as private, only those I send link to can view it. I'm not comfortable having them public. So no one will find any videos if they search anyway.
I wish I still had YT account as hookedonpole to be consistent, but since they are not public it works out. My FB and YT basically have same videos posted here for pole and communicate with others who are not veneers.

MemberNovember 6, 2012 at 8:46 am in reply to: hi doctor I’ve injured my arm how have you done this. weill I tried to do this this and this on a pole :/Yup, kinda had the same experience years ago when learning to invert (improperly) and pulled a muscle in my rib cage. It have a female doctor but still didn't tell her at first, I just said doing ab work by lifting knees to chest and straight out on a pull up bar. She thought that was too strenuous for me at 50+ yrs old! It didn't get any better so had to go back to make sure I didn't fracture a rib and fessed up! She just looked at me like deer caught in headlights LOL and said "Oh my, what if you fall off?"
BTW, what did doctor say or do about stretched muscle on your side? I have same problem right now. I was bad girl and didn't warm up before inverting to practice split grip ayesha and jackknife and strained right side muscle badly. It begins to feel almost all gone and I tried an invert and some invert stuff a week ago and OUCH. So not going to do any pole till I see it's totally healed, which I hope is soon. Just wondered what he said about the muscle.

Golgotha, I know it's difficult to explain, please know that it's not the sexy pole dance, as I said, I'm not good at it and WISH I was; it's a totally different thing attempted to be explained. As you can see in my post, 99.9% is awesome, so that for sure does not mean sexy pole dance is not, as a lot of what's here is sexy and awesome. I'll even say 99.9999999999% is awesome, again, it's hard to explain. I guess the few of us understand what's attempted to be communicated and I for one definitely do not want to give the impression of judgmental, etc. Many know of me here and that I'm not one to put down or demean. I apologize if my comments came across as such.
