MemberDecember 3, 2012 at 7:31 pm in reply to: Anyone live or pole dance in Los Angeles CA? I need your help 🙂Hi – excited to meet you at The Choreography House!
I'd recommend posting something on the TCH Facebook page. The ladies there are a hugely nurturing bunch who I'm sure would be happy to help you out. http://www.facebook.com/choreographyhouse?fref=ts
TCH (The Choreo Ho as residents like to call it) is right next to a 24 Hour Fitness, but TCH offers lots of other non-pole classes like Rock Hard Bodies (taught by Amber Richards), Ballet for Pole Dancers, Stretch & Flexibility, etc. etc. so you can get your full-body fitness fix.

Another great place to pick up inexpensive training wear (sports bras, pole shorts, ballet sweaters, warm-ups) is Danny's Warehouse in Culver City: http://www.dannyswarehouse.com/
It's a massive and totally unorganized warehouse so you really have to dig, but nothing there is over $10 and I've picked up the occasional weird one-off costume and other dance outfits that have made it into my performance closet.

You should also contact Kelly Maglia, who runs the line Triple Threat Dancewear and Kelly Maglia Couture: http://kellymaglia.com/
She's based in LA and runs her showroom/sample room out of her home in West Hollywood. I shop there all the time! She has samples there to try on, but she also does custom pieces.
She's my go-to gal for performance and competition costumes and is amazing.

Also make sure your outside hand is wrapped about behind the knee; the inside hand goes between your legs and cups the pole about upper-to-mid thigh (I find cup grip with no thumbs easier to hold on with more control). Practice lowering yourself a bit more gradually each time. Also force your arch a bit more on the foot by the pole. Another tip – imagine your arms acting as levers controlling how far you go out.
Good luck! 🙂

Welcome to the 'hood! I'll make sure and drop by when I return to L.A.!
(also love the website, by the way!)

Huge congrats, ladies!!!! And thanks, Meagan for the great recap. I love reading about how much camaderie happens backstage. People don't realize that there's actually very little backstabbing and cattiness at pole competitions (sometimes I think, much to their chagrin as they like envisioning it as some sort of taudry reality TV show backstage) and I love that one of the Elite competitors made everyone gift bags! All the ladies bond together over a highly intense and stressful situation that they're sharing together.
Looking forward to reading everyone else's recaps!
Also, did anyone attend Kelly Yvonne's seminar? How was it? (she's a close friend and my choreo coach.)

Aw, you guys are too sweet.
It's a great song — everyone should dance to it! I actually have a theory that almost NO ONE can do a bad routine to "Feeling Good" regardless of the version (Adam Lambert, Nina Simone, Michael Bublé). I've seen so many great routines done to that song.

MrsNaughtywed, we should start the 'i fell pole dancing on TV' club! 😉

Bummed I didn't get a chance to meet you ladies at the Pole Jam! It looks like so much fun!

Hi Hannah,
I'll for sure follow you!
My handle is http://twitter.com/polecricket
I also use Twitter for work, so this account lets my alter ego play 🙂
Best,

Shelly's Pole Studio is awesome (as is Shelly – she won 2nd place at USPDF West Coast): http://www.shellyspolestudio.com/ and classes are reasonably priced. Plus, Shelly has a dance background so teaches really beautiful movement!
The Poletential gals are fabulous too!

MemberJanuary 3, 2011 at 7:32 pm in reply to: Pole Studios in the Greater San Fransisco AreaThe Poletential ladies are FANTASTIC, but if your sister-in-law can't make the drive, she should look into Shelly's Pole Studio: http://www.shellyspolestudio.com/, which is in SF proper.
Shelly won 2nd place at USPDF West Coast and is a spitfire and a really funny, warm instructor. Her classes are very affordable too.

Cirque School in Hollywood occasionally brings out a fellow from San Diego named Steve Gale, who’s the originator of this ingenious contraption: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sK5C_mlEXsk
I took a Chinese Pole workshop with him and Timber Brown at the beginning of the month and it was a blast – they’re very good instructors. Steve’s coming back to LA (I believe teaching workshops at Cirque School) on Sept. 18th and will be teaching workshops and privates if anyone’s interested in signing up. You can contact him directly through http://www.facebook.com/steve.gale

Totally agree. Her pole routine was the most complex, innovative, original — and dangerous — I’ve ever seen! Totally hope to meet her and be able to take a workshop with her one day. Maybe it’s high time my fiancé and I took a trip to visit his family….hmmmm….

The woman is a freaking inspiration! I’ve always considered myself one of the older dancers at my studio (I’m almost 35) but after meeting this spitfire bundle of muscle, I think twice about complaining how I ‘only have a few years of pole dancing left.’ https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_geek.gif Because hey, maybe I’ll be like Shelly and rockin’ it for another decade!
Have you guys seen her Tri-Pole routine? It’s amazing. She really should have placed.

I hope you get in, because you’re such an amazing testament to the fact that a 47 year old can be just as sexy, strong and graceful as the young-uns! A fantastic role model https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif -
Aw man, thanks guys! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_dwarf.gif
(I don’t know what that emoticon is, but it kind of encapsulates my mood at the moment. Happy…and sort of feeling weird and out of sorts, since I’m not really used to winning…)
