Instead of grabbing the ankle, you could grab just below the knee (this is actually what I usually end up doing). Way less strain.
-
It looks good to me!
If you want to keep up with the move, you might try grabbing your ankle with your hand, rather than the pole (usually called the Advanced Cupid). That may require that you push your hips forward a bit in order to increase your knee grip, and twist your upper body to face the floor a bit.
You could also try the Hummingbird–no hands on the pole! That will also require pushing your hips forward more and twisting the upper body.
Happy poling!

Thanks for the news! It's good news indeed 🙂

MemberFebruary 11, 2011 at 11:13 pm in reply to: When should I start working on Cartwheel/Handspring mounts?I learned the cartwheel mount by standing with my dominant arm extended in front of me at shoulder level, hand on the pole. I then took one step back. Keeping an eye on the spot where my hand was on the pole, I step forward with my non-dominant leg and reach low while grabbing the pole with my dominant hand in the original spot. I think of it as more of a fall or dive down than a spring (like it would be in an actual cartwheel!). The legs follow into the air nicely.
The main problem I had was that I wasn't putting my head down. It really REALLY has to go down or the move won't work. I did a lot of practice just stepping into the mount and bringing my head down.

@ UTpoler: Thank you for the info! With two pieces of fabric, I could probably sew in my own padding. Very exciting–the back to that bra is spectacular!
-
I have almost nothing on top, and usually go for sports bras with a little padding to give some shape. Does the spider bra have any padding or shaping, or will it just flatten?
-
@ salubivires: Interesting! I always wondered if there was someone named Brian who did the move first, but the TV character would sound more likely 🙂
-
I've always wondered where these moves get their names. The Dangerous Brian has to have a story behind it 🙂

The Duchess has a picture up. It appears to be the Flatline Scorpio, but you put your hands on your butt and push up.
The Electric Slide I believe is just a Back Slide to the floor, but I may be off on that.
And I thinnk the Eagle is what Felix Cane is doing here: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_abef5Y6SJTM/TJ_R9QTrs-I/AAAAAAAAAbA/1ybvCb3-_ic/s1600/felix+xander+eagle.jpg

MemberFebruary 9, 2011 at 7:18 pm in reply to: Just have to share…LOVE the reverse handspring!I can see why it would be called the Forward Handspring. "Reverse" also makes sense to me, since in the regular Handspring you essentially spring backwards and twist the body into position, whereas with the "reverse" you spring forward and the body is already in position.

and @ Cheaannette: Good to know that they last a long time! I'm a bit worried about how a corset will work for pole dancing, since I'll need to bend my upper body a lot and don't want to worry about the boning. Are the ones you bought soft enough?

MemberFebruary 9, 2011 at 10:16 am in reply to: X-Pert versus New Extreme Super Pole Multi PieceI have an X-Pert, and that's correct. No problems with scraping at all!
If you go with an X-Pert, I would suggest shelling out the extra money for the gold titanium finish. My first X-pert didn't have it, and I slipped constantly. No problems with the gold titanium though!

MemberFebruary 8, 2011 at 8:58 am in reply to: figure head with (patriotic arms?) then what?Aha! I think the Candycane is commonly called the Corkscrew spin! Although I tend to keep my body more vertical for what I consider the Candycane, and with more of a horizontal tilt for the Corkscrew.

MemberFebruary 7, 2011 at 8:13 am in reply to: figure head with (patriotic arms?) then what?@ FreeTheSun–I may be, but whatever it is, you can end it in the Figurehead!
I wonder if the Candycane spin I talked about earlier in this thread would also be called the Body Spiral?

MemberFebruary 6, 2011 at 10:59 pm in reply to: figure head with (patriotic arms?) then what?CaseyT's explanation works for me. It also works if you regular climb, twist the upper body around, reposition the top hand, and let the legs twist around to the correct position. Such a pretty looking hold!

MemberFebruary 4, 2011 at 10:47 am in reply to: figure head with (patriotic arms?) then what?@ vamp79: Now that I think about it, you could probably get into the Figurehead even from the regular climb. It would just possibly take more of a twist of the upper body to get in the right position. Or maybe you could climb, lean the upper body forward and grab upward on the pole, and let the legs swing around in front. I'm at work so I can't try it out, but that might be an experiment for tonight's practice!

MemberFebruary 4, 2011 at 9:13 am in reply to: figure head with (patriotic arms?) then what?@ MichelleH: The Candycane spin might be considered a pencil spin, or maybe a ribbon spin; I'm not sure what the common name is, "Candycane" is what my studio calls it. What you do is grip your hands in the baseball grip (like you would for the basic invert) and bring your body to the side of the pole (so at this point, if your left hand was the outside hand, you'd be on the left side of the pole). Then, keeping your body straight, you use strength/a little momentum to swing your butt in front of the pole and to the other side (so the right side if we're going with the same example). The spin follows from there, and brings you down the pole to the floor with your body straight and spinning around the pole with the butt always facing the pole. If that explanation doesn't make sense, I can try to post a video!
@ chemgoddess1: You could get into the Figurehead from a Side Climb. After you've gotten a bit up the pole, you can turn your body and put your hands over your head like you were going into a Shoulder Mount. Figurehead!

MemberFebruary 3, 2011 at 11:26 pm in reply to: figure head with (patriotic arms?) then what?I usually think of the Figurehead with the arms forward/hands behind the head and the body arched forward a bit: http://www.triagedesign.co.uk/wikipole/index.php5?title=Image:Figurehead.jpg
From that position it's a little easier to transition into other moves, rather than having the body nearly straight against the pole and trying to transition.

MemberFebruary 3, 2011 at 5:44 pm in reply to: figure head with (patriotic arms?) then what?Ahh, I gotcha!
If you have the back flexibility for it, you could rest the pole in one of your armpits and go into the Bee's Knees (http://www.triagedesign.co.uk/wikipole/index.php5?title=Bees_Knees), and then maybe grab with the other hand and Candycane spin down. You could even catch the Candycane into a sit and go into the CKR from that, speaking of the CKR!
You could also go into the Superman (unless that's how you got into this move!).
