I thought that LM had options available for taller ceilings?

I do not know where you are located but try calling XPole.  There have been several events going on here in the US where they have been present so emails may take slightly longer to get answered.  Most of the time when they pop on here they even suggest calling.

    Don't rush

Ask questions of the studio you are planning on going to

Supplement with lessons here as much as you can

    Bruises will diminish over time

It will hurt and you probably will fall at some point

When you reach your first plateau (or 15th) keep going, one day there will be a breakthrough

Just because you can "do" a move does not mean that you know it….it may be elusive the next pole session

You are not better than any beginner level class.  They are fun to take again even years down the road.

Start setting aside money now for all of the shoes/booty shorts/workshops/comps, etc that you will want to attend

    Don't make it a competition

    And most of all…ENJOY

The other thing that helped me find my spot with this was to go into it out of a layback.

There are lots who lean to the side on this.  First things first, are you grabbing thumb up?  Your thumb should be way far in where the sun don't shine.  Akthough this pic shows the pole straight up center, you should have it a bit to the side of the lady bits too.

When I started poling there was not a whole lot of info as there is now.  I had learned how to do a carousel type move (split grip spin) and tore the crap out of my left forearm.  I also have a slight case of carpal tunnel in my right wrist from falling on it many many many times roller skating when I was a kid.  Due to this and lack of a lot of flexibility and rotation in my wrists my wrists and forearms get fatigued easily.  Downward dogs during warm up will pretty much kill me for doing any other split grip movement in class. The powerball allowed me to grip more with forearm strength than wrist, if that makes sense.  I can pretty much hold any grip with just my thumb, middle and ring finger doing all of the work.  For me that is a much more natural hold than bringing the pointer finger and pinky into the mix and the powerball allowed me to build the strength for that.  I really need to bring it back out because split grips are bothering me again.  I get throbbing pains in my wrists and it goes up to my elbow.

I will also note that in my observations those that have meatier thighs like CAR better than CKR and vice versa.

Why did I read that as CAR??  I am sorry…I just gave you the total wrong advice!

The one thing I always made sure my girls did is to make sure their bent leg was pointing backwards toward their shoulder.  And yes, catch that pole in the crook of the bend before ever letting go.  You can also place a chair just below you so that as you are leaning back you have something to catch you if slip.

Oh, they will help build grip. As you keep it spinning it has and outward torque that makes it want to fly out of your hand…the faster it goes the stronger the torque.  There is also this little thing that guitar players use called a gripmaster but it is more for improving single finger grip.  I know there are some other devices that climbers use but the powerball is probably the most used one out there.

As a side note, I have huge hands so grip was never an issue for me.

Jessie, didn't you get that one at one time?  I had it and let someone borrow it and it never made its way back to me.

ATL Booty Clap.  It is not only sold through their site but also on BadKitty and XPole.

There are 2 of them available: http://verticaljoes.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=featured&tmpl=component&type=raw

I won't say that it helped me so much with grip but it helped me with forearm strength.  I used to get sore very easily.  It also helped my wrists which tend to get very sore some days when I pole.

Yup!  Love mine.  If you search in the forum you will see bunches of us have them.  I just linked a few threads in the post about someone who hurt their forearm (within the last 2 days).

This is a move that to date still freaks me out.  The positioning for it is very different than the other 2 laybacks.  For me I have to internally the crap out of my legs and it will catch in that little fleshy spot just above my kneecaps.  If you are sitting in a chair with your ankles crossed try to get your kneecaps to touch….that is what I mean by internally rotating.  You should be able to close any gap between your thighs when you do this.  That is pretty much what you need to do to get a good grip.

There is also a group that started up shortly after SV got rid of the chat function that meets a few times a week though tinychat.  I generally try to pop in on Thursdays.  This is the site http://www.flexines.net/p/we-are.html

They also have a group on facebook that posts the days and times.  You need to email to get a password (due to stalkers on tinychat).

I will mention that TC has a few quirks but you just kinda live with them.

That is just a shoulder mount variation.  It is very popular in Australia but not many other places.  I recall that there was a bit of discussion about this grip when Felix made it popular.  I cannot recall the name of the grip though.

It depends only on how big the competition is.  Most that are a just submit a form type of thing are generally hurting for contestants.

Of course they are!  Parts of this are probably even stolen from the company that makes them for X pole.  When you barely get paid a living wage the only way to get ahead is to steal off the manufacturing line.  Sadly it is easier to deal with the thefts than it is with American unions.  But I digress…..

I will add to my questions: can you aerial shoulder mount?  You need to be able to have similar engagement of the abs to do this move properly.

While I do not know much about SI I can tell you that any serious injury will take minimum 6-8 weeks to heal and 3-6 months before you are completely back to where you started.  I am JUST getting the flexibility back in my hamstring that I injured bask at the end of April.

So I watched and stop motioned it.  Look at how reversely extended her shoulders are…..it is ridiculous and I only know a few people who can contort their shoulders like that.  That said:

I would try elbow hold aerial windmills first.  Well, any aerial windmill.  I know there was a tutorial or discussion on how to get into ballerina that way but I am too tired to go searching for it tonight.  Get the windmill to ballerina/pretzel or whatever that is first. I would probably next work on that elbow/behind back grip and being able to hold your body weight just in that grip.  Then baby step it….elbow grip to windmill, then add the foot reach around.
